In some cases, babies who are brought into the emergency room with their parents with a broken bone can cause a situation for the parents because the parents may be seen as being responsible for child abuse. X-rays are needed to be taken to prove that child abuse may not be the case and so that the doctors can know that a baby may have osteogenesis imperfecta, and that they can help the baby and that the doctors can know that child abuse is not the reason why the baby may have a broken bone. The physical clinical symptoms include “fragile bones, sensitive skin, hearing impairment, high temperature, short stature” (Annagür). To diagnose this disorder x-rays would be taken and the treatment for this disorder is would be surgery and management. Dr. Marion talked about a case of where two parents who accused of child abuse because of a misunderstanding, the doctors and medical staff thought that the parents were abusing the baby but the baby in reality had osteogenesis imperfecta (Gliga). This led to the parents of the baby getting a divorce later on, the mistakes of the medical staff sadly led to a divorce and a fight and being seen as being suspicious for hurting their baby, even though it was later proven that abuse was not the
The Forever Fix, a novel by geneticist and text book author Ricki Lewis, gives an incredibly in depth look into gene therapy and the children whose lives it changed. Gene therapy is the insertion of correct and functioning DNA into a genetically diseased patient, who is typically missing an enzyme or protein due to their genetic code. Before sharing the successful stories of gene therapy, Lewis first tells about Jesse Gelsinger’s story perhaps to show how far gene therapy has progressed. Jesse Gelsinger was born in 1981, and was an overall healthy baby despite his eating habits.

Value neutral counseling consist of 3 elements: the goal is to give the patient all the details to assist in their decision, only give facts and not opinions, a person must have the skill set to be nondirective in the delivery of information. “Nondirectiveness counseling should help the patient choose the best treatment. A later survey of National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) members reported that 96% of respondents considered nondirectiveness to be important in their clinical practice. When this group was asked to define the nondirectiveness in their own words, the majority of responses fell into three major categories. If we were able to make our children smarter, better looking, or more athletic, should we? Amy Sterling Casil had that exact scenario in mind when she wrote her short story, Perfect Stranger in 2006. Written in the first-person narrative that takes place in the distant future, Casil weaves a terrifying story of genetic alteration to “fix” our children’s flaws. What harm can it cause if gene therapy is performed as an elective procedure rather than medical necessity? Gary and Carolyn, expecting parents, find out their little boy will need gene therapy while still in the womb if they hope to spare him from a fatal heart condition.

In the documentary Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond questions and explains why early settlements had more advanced technology and lifestyles than other settlements. He believes the reason behind this inconsistency is due to Geographic Luck. He theorized that the location of a civilization affects their growth and development as a community. Diamond used evidence of early Papua New Guinea and Middle Eastern settlements to prove his theory. Geographical features in a civilization's location such as wildlife, plant life, climate, and other raw resources determined their overall success and lifestyle.
