Mary Jane Patterson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her parents brought and their family to Oberlin, Ohio to find an education for their children. In 1835, Oberlin College admitted its first black student and eventually became the country’s first coed institution of higher education. It was also the first college in the country to grant women undergraduate degrees. Mary Jane Patterson studied for a year in the college’s Prepatory Department and she was the first African-American women to earn a Bachelor’s degree. Born into slavery, she is known as the first black woman in the United States to graduate from an four-year college.
Mary Flora Bell was born May 26, 1957 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom and is still alive today. Mary, as we all know her, was called The Tyneside Strangler. Mary strangled two boys, ages 3 and 4, to death in 1968. She was 10 years old – this occurred the day before her 11th birthday. In December of 1968, Mary was convicted of manslaughter for the 2 killings. She was imprisoned for 12 years until her release from Askham Grange open prison at 23 years old. In addition to her release, she was given a new name, as well, in order to begin her new life. To this day, she, and her daughter (born May 25, 1984 – 16 years to the exact day of Mary’s first killing), who gave her a grandchild in 2009, live in anonymity, which was granted to Bell and her family in 2003, for life). This is now known as a “Mary Bell Order.” Under this order, any convict may have their identity permanently protected.
To be completely honest, when I first decided to pursue a career in medicine, I was immature and selfish. I believed: "Volunteering isn 't benefitting me, so why should I spend my valuable time doing it?" Now, after 4 years of life-changing experiences, I have a whole new perspective about serving others. My experiences volunteering have made me not only more passionate about pursuing such a beautiful, self-rewarding career but more prepared to tackle the many daily challenges of a physician.
Would you be willing to work on the mission field for fifty-five years without a break or furlough? Most people would not be willing to undertake such a difficult task. Even the most devout Christians would be hesitant or even unwilling to give their life in this way. Amy Carmichael did this to reach the lost in India. She served the Lord faithfully rescuing the temple children from horrible lives, sharing Christ with the young ladies, and writing several books about missionary life. This was all part of God 's special plan for Amy. Amy Carmichael 's early life shaped how she would be used of the Lord in her middle age and even into the later years of her life.
I have recently realized that if we let our personal challenges destroy us, then we are nothing and have nothing to offer. It 's important that we take control of our situation and use the personal hardship as an opportunity to better ourselves. Each one of us have a different story making us rare, valuable, and uniquely in our own ways.

Sometimes we as human beings have so much going on in our life’s that we get so caught up with it. We do not realize that other people in our community or in our world there are many children that are getting abused or hurt by their families. An article called “Skagit County couple charged with death of adopted child” that was written by Natasha Ryan and Jake Whittenberg described the life of Hana Williams. Hana Williams was just 13 years old when she died. The girl was found dead in her backyard on May 12, naked and wrapped in a sheet. Tamra Gould is a senior at Edmond North High School who has shown exceptional talent in photography and exceptional character in her reaction to society’s expectations. While Gould has always expressed an interest in photography, it was not until a photo of hers received first place at a UCO competition that she truly began to recognize her talent. Gould specifically prefers to photograph people who lack self-confidence or people who are looked down upon by society or viewed as “special” or “weird.” A few of her favorite subjects include her little brother, who has Down Syndrome and her little sister, who has been bullied all throughout school.
Unfortunately, I have not held any offices in the organizations above yet but I sure intend to. However, I have been a leader and mentor in many of the organizations. The National Society of Leadership and Success has taught me how to be an effective leader throughout my time here at Columbus State University. The Competitive Premedical Studies Program has allowed me to mentor those incoming students into the program and give helpful advice as how to make the most of the program.
In the life of Betty Marie Tallchief there was a lot of obstacles. She was not only just an Indian girl, she just loved to dance. So from that moment on that she knew that she was going to be a ballerina she worked really hard.
I, Jasmyne Makaela Bibbins was born July 3rd 2003 at 8:05 am in Loma Linda, California. I was born to the proud parents of Michael and Lashae Bibbins. I share my birthday with Tom Cruise, a famous actor. I was originally going to be born in Los Angeles but my mom and dad thought Lake Elsinore would be a better place to settle down. Besides, the houses in Lake Elsinore are less expensive than houses in Los Angeles. Astrologers said that I would be a Cancerian and that I would be sensitive, understanding and fond of traditions. I believe this is true because I love our family picnics camping trips, and holiday parties.
Growing up in an urban community and being in the military has shaped me in many ways. My experience in the urban community allowed me to understand that I do not have to be a product of my surroundings. With dedication and hard work I can rise above it all and make any of my dreams come true. Being in the Army has taught me to be mentally tough no matter the situation. The amount of stress that we are placed under on a daily basis would drive a normal human to their breaking point. With my understating to not let my surroundings define me, my military bearing, and the support of my family I will always strive for excellence in everything that I do.
I used to not take advantage of the opportunities given to me. However, after hearing the stories and troubles that my parents have faced, I realized that I had to take the initial steps towards completing my goals and dreams. Consequently, I’ve immersed myself into what I do as it helps me grow as a person and take the first leaps towards achieving my goals/dreams.
As I have challenged myself throughout my high school career, I have gained new passions and goals. Taking higher-level classes such as AP and running start, I have prepared myself for the fast pace of college. Along with this, I’ve become involved in clubs that have allowed me to experience numerous volunteer opportunities.
