There are many cultures in the world. Many countries, regions, religions, and many other things all have their own way of living. It is very hard to understand each other, especially when the common sence, or the manners are different. However, it is harder to find similarities between cultures. That could be one of the reasons why there are problems between countries, that we can’t understand each other’s. Finding the solution to these problems might also solve the problem over the world. In the first video, a man from a country outside Japan was observing the table manners to see what he is supposed to do at a Japanese lunch that he’s still not used to. However, even though he was trying to act like the Japanese, he was making many mistakes throughout the video. First, he was sitting with his knees above the table. In Japan, it is a very desrespectful gesture to sit with their knees above the table when eating. Secondly, as he saw others slurping in the somen (Japanese noodles) to their mouth when eating, he tried thinking that it is considered to be a good table manner in Japan. The difference …show more content…
He made a big mistake because of the difference of understanding and culture. He met a women, and wanted to go closer to her. He helped her with her shopping bags, walked together, and finally he gave her a chrysanthemum flower. He wanted to tell her that he likes her with that flower, but giving her a chrysanthemum flower was a big mistake in that country. For the country that the man lives in, that flower could be a great gift to someone you like, or to express your intension. However, in the country that the women lives in, that was not a good gift to get. It seems that they are using those flowers when someone dies, in funerals. So then, other neighbors of the women saw the flower, and thought she has died. This video shows that these kinds of differences of cultures can lead to
A Cultural Minefield by William Ecenbarger is an article about how common gestures and customs at home have different meanings in other parts of the world. Ecenbarger has been to six different continents and didn’t realize until years later, that he offended or embarrassed his host during that time. For example Ecenbarger in Australia got into a taxi and jumped into the back seat. The taxi driver spoke to him in voice that made Ecenbarger nervous. In the United States it is a custom that you jump into the back seat whenever asking for a cab.
The beauty of the flowers against the extreme background of poverty makes the children's realize the lack of beauty and hope in their future. The children do not know whey they are angry by the flowers but the flowers represents the only hope, beauty and life amongst their life in the dust. When Lizbeth hears her father sobbing over his inability to find a job, she loses hope because her father had represented strength
“Whenever the memory of those Marigolds flashes across my mind, a strange nostalgia comes with it and remains long after the picture has faded. I feel again the chaotic emotions of adolescence, illusions as smoke, yet as real as the potted geranium before me now. Joy and rage and wild animal gladness and shame become tangled together in a multicolored skein of 14-going-on-15 as I recall that devastating moment when I was suddenly more women than child, years ago in Miss.Lottie’s yard.” Both of these examples go to show that little things can have much more meaning than what materialistic things seen, but that they can have strong emotional ties to a person who views them in a different way. When Lizabeth comprehends this topic it leads towards her gain in
The author uses the marigolds as a symbol but, their meaning varies between each character. To a young Lizabeth , the marigolds symbolise beauty in a place that it doesn't belong. These beautiful flowers anger a young Lizabeth because she thinks they didn’t belong in the old dusty town she grew up in. To an adult Lizabeth these flowers hold a different meaning, they now represent hope to her. These flowers hold a different meaning to Miss Lottie, to her they represented what was left of love, hope, and beauty in her life.
As you can tell from the videos, without knowing anything at the beginning, it is impossible to understand what other cultures are, but I also felt that it is also impractical to overcome all of these 6 stumbling blocks of intercultural communication. For example, if you don’t assume something, you become anxious and that navigates us to another issue that she mentioned, which was stress. The misinterpretations of nonverbal communication are something that is linked with assumption. All of these issues are big issues that prevent us from communicating fully. However I believe there is something more important to us, for example like how fully interested we are in cultures, how optimistic we are to this subject, how much we realize that there are ubiquitous cultural conflicts to cultures in the world.
Flowers symbolize so many things in society nowadays. People receive and give flowers on several different occasions. Flowers are symbols of love, sadness, apologizes, excitement, passion, and many others. Flowers also play a big role in the story “Paul’s Case” written by Willa Cather. The main character, Paul, often gives special meaning to the flowers present in the story.
The story, "Marigolds", has a beautiful message within the sad story that some may see it as. But if you look beyond the fact that it takes place in a barren town of poverty, you can see the beauty within the Marigolds, which represent much more than one may assume. When I read this story, I looked at it in a couple different ways and found a few different ways that the theme could be understood, still adding up to one theme. I also found a couple different ways that the marigolds could be represented. For example, there is beauty everywhere, everyone must learn to grow up, and one cannot have compassion and innocence.
Comparison between the Tibetan nationality and the Hmong With the tendency of globalization, the entire world has become more familiar with each other in plenty aspects.. (Tan 84). Peoples' communicating leads to the spread of different ideas. Language connects societies figuratively and literally. Culture and language influence people extensively which allow people to be susceptible to miscommunication when a barrier is too vast. Familial relationships disrupt from language barriers.
Therefore, the standard table manners were completely ignored in my misuse of the utensils. In addition to Garfinkel's concept of ethnomethodology, this breaking of a social norm experiment can be analyzed in terms of Erving Goffman’s impression management. Goffman says that people are very much concerned with two types of the presentation of self, verbal and nonverbal communication. Also, people try desperately to manage how they are presented in society in order to control what people think of them and their roles in certain social situations. In regard to my experiment, I tried to give the impression of normal behavior so I would not draw attention to myself.
Everyone should respect others culture and try to understand others culture goals and norms as it is important to live with different cultural people. As every culture have its own norms, goals, experiences and
Although the couple may have not seen this as a big deal, it symbolizes the “broken” relationship that leads to an even more broken situation. This scene foreshadows that their argument will eventually end up hurting something or someone. Unfortunately, the flowerpot scene did foreshadow the end result of this
A culture, by definition, is a set of shared beliefs within a society; learning how to interact with people from different cultures is important in order to communicate and work with each other. It helps us become understanding of one another and widens our perspective of what the world has to offer. To be able to cross cultural communicate with others, the first step is to be aware that every culture is complex and has its differences. While traveling to new countries and trying to understand each other, there is a large possibility of miscommunication, which can come in the form of misinterpreting messages or body language; therefore, it is crucial to keep an open mind whilst communicating. There are multitudes of factors in various cultures that play a role in decision making, so being aware of the expectations that are influenced by someone’s culture will help you understand their choices.
The belief of respect is important that managers, supervisors, employees at the organization also reflect organization’s culture and manner. I realized that respect others is an effective way to improve my own quality and it requires me to respect others’ achievement and custom. Therefore, respect is my basic quality and I have to be patient with each employee although I am a leader in the future career. 4.2 Examining Political, Cultural and Social Realities Power is defined as a capacity that the behavior of A has to be affected and act according to B’s wishes (Robbins et al., 2010).
Jay might have thought this because of the hardships he had endured. Also there was imagery in the petals in the bowl. Jay was in the middle of a loud, wild festival which reminded him of a bowl of petals. From my perspective, this is unusual, I wouldn’t be thinking of flowers in this environment. “Carnival was just a painting, a bunch of petals in a bowl” (Hemley, Whipped 114).
