“We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them.”-Charles Caleb Colton. I love this quote because it almost summarizes what I will be talking about today. We’ve always been told to love others and accept them, but if you look around, it’s obvious that humanity as a whole hasn’t listened to this piece of advice. People often judge others by what they seem like on the surface, but if you search deep down and get to know them, 99% of the time your assumption will be wrong-to some degree. I know this because I myself have, like many others, decided to “Hate” others for no other reason then “they’re annoying”- and it sure didn't pay off that much for anyone. Than after getting to know some of the people I assumed were the absolute worst, I realized there is much more than what's on the surface. But when I looked around, I realized other students didn’t come to the same conclusion- and that it could hurt the others around them.People are much deeper than they seem, and when someone judges another by how they come across on the surface, it can easily lead to social bullying and hurting others out there. …show more content…
It’s all around, we just don’t acknowledge it or know it. Social bullying is something that almost directly comes from hate and judging others negatively- and it hurts the bullier as well as it hurts the victim. Examples of social bullying is talking behind someone's back, spreading rumors, and gossiping about a person. Sound familiar? Most of us, although unknowingly, are social bullies- but I think we can change that. Instead of judging someone for what they come off as on the surface, try and get to know them before drawing any conclusions about
In the story “Fan Club” by Rona Maynard, and the article “When Bullying Goes High-tech” by Elizabeth Landau, there are many connections with the topic bullying. Ashley and Rachel were both bullied by their classmates, but in different ways. We know this because on page five of “Fan Club” Rona states, “That was when Laura saw that they were all wearing little white cards with a fat frizzy, hairy figure drawn on the front, what did it mean? She looked closely, “Hortensky Fan Club” said the bright red letters.” While in “When Bullying Goes High-Tech” in paragraph 30, Elizabeth says that “When she was 11, a classmate of hers took photos of Ashley and created an entire Facebook page about her but denied doing it.
One survey question reads, “If you ever experienced a form of bullying, how did it make you feel? Did you go to someone for help?” One student answered this question by saying, “yes it made me feel really shitty and made me hurt myself. No, I did not go for help, nobody would listen.” This student shows that they chose to not say anything because they feel or know that nobody would listen anyway.
The author directs bullying as aggressive behavior can take place on internet, at school, social places, even home (Jarolmen, 2014). The author cites Yerger &Gehret, 2011 as they elaborate on the causes of bullying. School social workers must implement peer groups, promote student awareness, and empower victims of bullying. As a professional school social worker, you will need to "Bully Proof Your School"; programs such as PATHS, Safe School Ambassador (SSA) will allow you to do such (Yerger & Gehret, 2011 as cited in Jarolmen, 2014). These above-mentioned programs will encourage student leadership, intervention and advocacy amongst
In the article, “The Myths of Bullying,” author and public issues analyzer, John Cloud, argues that bullying and its effects have been exaggerated and the ways used to combat bullying have done more harm than good. Initially, Cloud suggests that due to the media and its coverage on certain cases, bullying has been made out to be an epidemic. However, he believes that bullying is no more of a problem than it was years ago by providing the statistic “that 37% of students don’t feel safe at school. That figure has remained stable over decades.”
How can one person be sure that one nice school day a person will not be judged just because of their identity, but the content of their character? There are probably tons of things that bother us, but the
In most cases, when we think about bullying it is approached from a psychological perspective but there is a sociological perspective that is not talked about as much. Sociologists study actions and relationships in terms of the social contexts in which people live their lives. In other words, sociology is the study of society and social interactions. Psychologists study behaviour in terms of the attributes and processes inside each individual. They focus on the people involved in the situation rather than the situation as a whole.
Bullying when we hear that word our thoughts are drawn to what society today was labeled a plague. This plague is sweeping through the school systems and causing mayhem where ever it happens to rear its ugly head. Statisticians have noted the increase in the reporting of bullying, this is one of societies rallying points that more incidents of bullying are being reported today then five, ten and even fifteen years ago. Some see this as a cause from violent video games others say it is caused because it is seen as a normalcy in school. But there are they who say that that the increase in the reporting of bullying is a misnomer, a mistake, a case of seeing a shadow at sunset and guessing height.
Bullying is taking over the world as we know it. Bullying is harmful physically and mentally whether you 're meaning for it to or not. According to www.verywell.com, "When it comes to bullying, a lot of people blame the victim instead of the bully. For instance, some people think that victims of bullying bring it on themselves, that they cause the bullying in some way. "
Relational bullying occurs when someone is excluded a group or event, talked about behind their back, is the subject of rumors and lies, or giving the silent treatment. Relational bullying deprives individuals the opportunity feel close and accepted by their peers, which is important for their well-being and development. Girls are more likely to use, and to become the targets of, relational bullying (Kaiser
Bullying is a phenomenon existing as long as humans exist. The fact that it didn’t have a name for years doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a widespread way of behavior, in cases where two different types of people were involved ; the strong and the weak ones. Although bullying is considered as a form of aggression, or in some cases as an infringement of the human rights, “bullying is commonly regarded as an aspect of aggression”. (Roland and Idsoe, 2001), there are significant differences between them , the most important of which that “bullying is different from peer conflict. It is conflict between individuals that do not share equal physical and / or psychological power.
Bullying is, by far, the single most common practice of prejudice in the world, and it’s unfortunately propagated by the social construct of gender roles; a type of discrimination against sex and gender. As Jessie Klein, the author or The Bully Society, states, “In the absence of authentic self-expression and relationships, we become accustomed to the irrational foundation on which our lives are structured and accept some unacceptable ideas: that this is as good as it gets; that competition is better than cooperation; that things are more important than people; and that inequality makes more sense for a society than equality” (Klein 238). Thus, it’s the societal foundation that builds upon all prejudice and bias. Such, society is tasked with educating the masses and properly handling the various distances between groups. It’s when this relationship and checks and balances fails, does bullying grow rampant within society.

Bullying is a widespread problem in our schools and communities and has a negative impact on students’ right to learn in a safe and secure environment without fear. It is a process in which one person repeatedly uses his/her superior strength or influence to mistreat, attack or force another person to do something (Van der Werf, 2014). Bullying or peer victimization is now recognized as a complex and pervasive problem (Beran, 2009). It is an ongoing problem that is not restricted by age, race, gender or class. This behavior generally takes one of four forms, physical such as assault, verbal which involves threats or insults, social which entails exclusion or rumor spreading, and cyber which includes aggressive texts or social network posts
