Suspense is a key point in any story or plot. Suspense is a feeling of expectation, anxiousness, or curiosity created by questions raised in the mind of a reader or a viewer. Richard Connell builds suspense in the story by making readers question what will happen next. One way Connell constructs suspense is through the description of the vast chateau. The story describes how the chateau looks. “He opened the tall spiked iron gate. The stone steps were real enough; the massive door with a leering gargoyle knocker” (30). Connell is describing how eerie looking the chateau is to Rainsford. It builds suspense by making Rainsford rigid and afraid of what’s inside of the massive chateau. It also gives a robust description around the chateau. Connell …show more content…
He introduces Ivan as “The largest man Rainsford had ever seen” (30). This makes Rainsford feel intimidated by Ivan. He feels like he’s lost all confidence. This builds suspense by presenting how Rainsford feels about Ivan. Another way he builds suspense is through the way Ivan acts when he meets Rainsford. Connell exclaims- “ THe man’s only answer was to raise his thumb the hammer of the revolver. Then Rainsford saw the man’s free hand go to his forehead in a military salute, and he saw him click his heels together and stand at attention” (30). In this quote, it makes Rainsford feel a little more trustworthy with Ivan. Ivan also feels comfortable with Rainsford now. But Rainsford probably feels edgy with Ivan because of his size. Out of all the points of suspense, they are all helpful to making the readers feel anxious about what will happen next. They really feel curious when Richard Connell gives a description of Ship-Trap Island. It makes the readers want to know what will happen next. So suspense really is a key point in every story, authors want readers to think about the story. Suspense also helps reader comprehend the story because again, it makes readers think. They may not know it, but suspense helps them to become better
In the story “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author creates a feeling of suspense multiple times. Throughout the story, you will see examples of suspenseful moments, including these few I’m about to tell you. When Rainsford and Whitney are on the yacht in the ocean going past Ship-Trap Island, after Whitney goes to sleep and Rainsford is outside on the boat, he hears a gunshot go off a few times. Rainsford then got curious wanting to know what it was and he then stands on the edge of the boat and falls overboard then finds it hard to swim and yells for help but the boat never stops. He then decides to swim to the island and as he is walking through the jungle that’s on the island, he found a chateau on the strange island.
What is suspense? Suspense is anxiety the reader feels about what is going to happen in the next story. Suspense can cause the reader to feel nervous and worried. There is a lot of suspense in books. In a comic book called Dragon Hoops, Dragon hoops is a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang about basketball, student stores, and racism.
Instead of being fearful and wanting to give up, Rainsford became zealous; a fearless survivor. “ Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea.”
This type of suspense also causes the reader to “have to” keep reading. A few pages later, the author creates suspense again when Sorrento says “sit down Wade.” Even though they have his home wired with explosives, he still logs out. The author again drops off and waits at least half a page until he makes the bomb go off. Once again, the reader has to think “was he bluffing or not” and makes the reader continue to read when suddenly, bang, there 's your
In the end, suspense is something that gives stories a little excitement to
Rainsford fears him and fears for his safety “Put distance between himself and General Zaroff.” He wants to as far away from Zaroff because he hates him and if he is caught he will be killed. Connell is telling the reader he is kicking into survival gear and getting the heck away from the danger. My claim is proven furthermore when Rainsford is thinking “Something like panic” which shows his instinct. In this passage Rainsford is panicking because his once friend is now trying to kill him.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
Suspense is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. For instance, page 173 states, “And this I did for seven long nights- every night just at midnight- but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me; but his Evil Eye”. Page 173 has many examples of suspense but, the main one was that he wouldn’t kill the man for seven days. He was safe because, his eye was closed but, this then makes the reader fear for the man because, what if one of his eyes opened.
Suspense, the state of tension, anxiety, and uncertainty, like waiting for an outcome that comes very slow. Authors usually create suspense by using story elements. In the story “The Monkeys Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, he uses story elements such as foreshadowing, conflict, and surprise ending. Foreshadowing is one of the biggest ways that expresses suspense in the story. For example Sergeant Major Morris states that the first owner of the paw wished for death.
Finally, when Rainsford has learned of the general’s “game” and his current setting creates a sense of helplessness or powerlessness. The night before he is hunted, Rainsford states, “Once he thought he heard stealthy steps in the corridor outside his room. He sought to throw open the door; it would not open. He went to the window and looked
The theme of the story is, walk a mile in somebody else’s shoes. Throughout the game, Rainsford has to walk in the shoes of the animals he hunted. He was forced to hide from the hunter, which was the General, just like the animals tried to hide from him when he was hunting them. In addition, Rainsford ran away from the General and had to take risks to escape just like when he hunted the animals. Aswell, At the end of the story, Rainsford says, “I am still a Beast at Bay.
Rainsford did not smile. I am still a beast at bay, he said, in a low, hoarse voice. Get ready, General Zaroff. The general made one of his deepest bows. I see,
This piece of text is suspenseful to the reader because the reader does not know where the narrator is or what time period this event
Suspense about the characters, suspense about the plot; everything was a mystery. The narrator’s every step brought suspense, especially when he got involved with the beating of the heart. Towards the end of the story, the author leaves readers constantly wondering as the suspense is increasing - What will happen to the characters, or how will they end up? These are questions that readers often find themselves asking, although the most common question is simply what will happen
Suspense is used in literature to give off a feeling of uncertainty. In W.F. Harvey’s story “August Heat”, he writes about our protagonist James and how he meets a bizarre character named Mr.Atkinson who he feels is an unnatural person and feels uneasy with him. Later when he is invited to stay the night, Harvey finished the story off with James saying he will “be gone in less than an
