Yolanda struggles with finding out who she is. Going on a trip to find guavas is a way to find freedom from her family, while also appreciating the culture of her country. Wendy Perkins writes “During her search for the fruit, she encounters a more pronounced sense of class conflict and sexism than she has found in America. Thus Yolanda is in effect caught between two cultures: she looks to her homeland to provide her with a more complete sense of herself, but at the same time, recognizes that she has been Americanized enough to be unable to return to a more traditional way of life” (Perkins 4). This relates the guavas, which represent Yolanda’s Dominican culture, to the culture she saw during
The most important factor in why someone chooses to do something is how that action will affect their personal feelings because humans value their feelings more than others '. Connie, from "Abuela Invents the Zero" by Judith Ortiz-Cofer, decided to put her feelings in front of Abuela 's when Connie chose not to help when Abuela could not find her way back to the pew in the church. When Connie noticed that Abuela was lost, she decided not to help her because, "I just know that on Monday my friends, and my enemies, in the barrio will have a lot of senile -grandmother jokes to tell in front of me" (Ortiz-Cofer para 14). This shows that Connie put her feelings before Abuela because she did not want to be teased by her friends. If Connie put others ' feelings in front of hers, she would have stood up and helped Abuela no matter how much she would have been teased because Abuela is family.
Koly in Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan reminds me of Matilda in Matilda by Rhold Dahl because they both insist on learning and reading even though their families are against it. In Matilda, her family is against her learning because they are all more interested in money, food, and TV. Therefore, Matilda was unhappy with her life, so she chose to live with Mrs. Honey because she treasured education just as much as Matilda. On the other hand, Koly’s family is against her getting an education because of cultural reasons. Using what I know, I predict that Koly will become forlorn with her new life and husband, which will lead to her running away from home to get an education.
Gemma often thinks about her family and tries to forget about reality and remember little moments from her home. In the short story, by Ethan Canin, “Star Food,” a boy named Dade is faced with struggles with his parents that have different points of views as his mother is an optimistic woman that wants Dade to keep dreaming. On the other hand, Dade’s father who is a realist wants Dade to carry the name and own Star Food after his father, he also wants Dade to work in store efficiently. They both wanted different things for his future, but everything changes when a poor, thieving woman enters their lives and steals from their store. The biggest question in “Star Food” is why Dade let the woman go. I believe Dade let the woman go because he felt like he wasn’t cut out for the life his father lived, and wanted to be more distinct than his strict father.
I also feel guilty for not wanting to spend more with her.” Said by Lin describing what happens when she feeds her grandmother. Lins grandmother was her major access to her culture. Lin throughout the story tries to stay away from her grandmother. Spending time with her reminds Lin about her time in Chinatown.
Symbolism is important through this text. The reason being is the symbols act as visual concepts that convey a deeper meaning than what is presented. Mama shows symbolism with a plant sitting near a window. The plant is dying because it lacks the resources it needs to survive. Even though this issue is at hand Mama works hard every day to water it and care for it so one day it will flourish.
(Sepetys 135). Her mom wants to make Lina realize that she should still be nice to people even if they do not do the same in return. At the end of the story she begins to get this. Because she begins to get this she begins to get hope herself for one reason “a guilty conscience is not worth extra food” (Sepetys 122). When Lina got some more food she agreed to give it to her friends because she has to share with them in order for everyone to survive.

When people are greedy, they are often only think about themselves. They should learn how to be a better person by at least being thankful to others or trying to give back in return. In the stories, “The Fisherman and His Wife”and The Great Gatsby, characters like Alice and Daisy are unappreciative which made them lose everything. In the story, “The Fisherman and His Wife”, Alice was still not satisfied with any of the gifts she was granted.
A sacrifice can happen in many different ways for your family or simply for a friend. Either way a sacrifice can show someone what they truly hold dearly to themselves. Markus Zusak shows that there are many examples of characters sacrificing objects for their family in The Book Thief. A character whose sacrifices stood out to me was Hans Hubermann when he gave up his cigarettes to buy Liesel books for Christmas. Hans Hubermann makes many sacrifices for his family to provide to theme with happiness.
