Taye Selasi argument in where people identify themselves is based on answering the question where is one local than where are one is from. To answer the question of where one is from one must look at what shapes one's experiences because Selasi says “my experience is where I am from.” When someone ask me the question “where are you from?” The person wants to know what my nationality is due to my different skin tone or complexion. I tell them I am hispanic and both of my parents are from Mexico. I am indeed Mexican but I do not consider myself from Mexico because I have never visited Mexico before and have lived in the United States my whole life.
