In this poem, poet Taylor Mali is making an assertion that today’s generation has become less definitive and clear with their language. Rather than plainly state what they want, think, or need, individuals are now posing these convictions they have as questions. Mali says that the reason for the sudden ambiguity among individuals is due to the fact that our society has become unable to phrase their sentences to properly express how they feel. Individuals have become so inarticulate that to disguise it we have resorted to using less words and just hoping that others will understand the point we are making. In order to avoid having to explain the reasoning behind ideas, individuals are starting to convert their statements into questions. This …show more content…
Typically, teenagers and young adults try to use as few words possible in order to mask their inarticulateness while still trying to explain themselves. As a result, our sentences are ambiguous and lack any definitive opinions. For instance, social media has contributed to this issue by forcing users to conform to character limits that prevent people from fully explaining themselves. Specifically, on twitter, users are restricted to 140 characters, which prevents them from being able to write clear, understandable statements. Consequently, many tweets or posts can be falsely interpreted since they are so vaguely written. Rather than state what we truly think, we are now “subtweeting” and are forced to read between the lines that would not exist if society were more articulate. Moreover, a huge component of pop culture is slang and abbreviations. These abbreviations are used shorten what we are saying and mask the fact that we cannot express ourselves. Frequently, teens use slang such as YOLO, SMH, or LOL it express how they feel without actually saying it out. This demonstrates how as a society we are incredibly dependent on hoping that others understand what we are trying to
The universal theme is very important to the text. What the universal theme is, basically a theme that appears over and over again. In this case, the theme is to always respect and care for your family, because it won’t last forever. “I’m making a wooden bucket. When you and mamma get old, I’ll feed you out of this wooden dish.”
“Poetry Is Not a Luxury” (1982) intertwines feminism and poetry together. Author Audre Lorde says that for women, “poetry is not a luxury, but a necessity of our existence” (Lorde, 1982, pg. 281). In today’s society, women’s opinions aren’t really expressed, because it’s not widely accepted in this man-built world. Lorde’s quote “poetry is not a luxury, but a necessity of our existence” means that women should use their voices and channel their energy into poetry. Since poetry is accepted, women aren’t being deviant.
Poetry Analysis Once the poem “History Lesson” was written numerous poetry foundations celebrated it for many reasons. “History Lesson” not only makes an impact on literature today it has also impacted people also. This poem inspires people and moves them to the point to where they can find a personal connection to the poem itself and to the writer. Not only does it hold emotional value for those who were victimized and those whose family were victimized by the laws of segregation, but the poem is also celebrated for its complexity. The poem uses many techniques to appeal to the reader.
Twitter, a social media platform used by over 330 million people daily, has a limit of 280 characters per tweet (post) which limits what people can say without going to long and losing the attention of other users. Snapchat, a picture messaging app, limits videos or pictures that are sent to the span of ten seconds on the screen of the person who received it and then it disappears. People spend approximately eight hours a day on social media, which is half the time most people spend awake in a day. Going back to Maryanne Wolf who said, “We are not only what we read, [w]e are how we read,” social media shapes how we think. The short things we spend time reading change how we prefer to read, creating new connections in our minds with the expectation that everything we read will be less than 280 characters.
Have you ever dreamed of the future when you are young? Have you ever had a dream job that you really want to do? Sometime, all of those dreams just disappear when you grow up. Those things that you could do when you were young but it is weird to do right now. The reason that you think it is weird is because people tell you, isn’t it?
The exhibit of the facade Dunbar included in his work, lead to Howell to praise his work for the audience of those that were White and it lead to national attention. Dunbar by no means was able to escape the stereotype for his dialect poetry. As a result, it limited his influence towards the African American community. The final poem to be addressed is Dunbar’s most highly praised dialect poems, “When Malindy Sings.” Keeling suggests that Dunbar’s use of dialect should be defined, “We must show how Dunbar’s mask of dialect can be a powerful active force rather than a self-defeating retreat into a fantasy world”(29).

How would you feel if someone could control what you were thinking? In “The Feed” written by M.T Anderson, everyone living in the community had a feed in their brain that was controlled by one large organization. Violet, the main character, suffers through a malfunction in her feed that changes the way she sees her society. Most people’s opinions can be changed when they have experienced the benefits and the disadvantages of something. Since Violet is aware of how life is with and without the feed, she becomes hesitant to believing that her community is being run efficiently.
She looked at the Snapchat message one more time. Not only would she be taking her life, but the happiness of everyone else that she knew. All is took was one more glance. Although some people think that it is okay for children to have social media accounts, many only put their children in danger. So many children are posting without any sense of what it can cause.
Rina Morooka Mr Valera Language Arts Compare and Contrast essay on “The poet’s obligation”, “When I have fears that I may cease to be”, and “In my craft of sullen art” The three poems, “The poet’s obligation” by Neruda, “when I have fears that I may cease to be” by Keats, and “In my craft of sullen art” by Thomas, all share the similarity that they describe poets’ relationships with their poems. However, the three speakers in the three poems shared different views on their poetry; the speaker in Neruda’s poem believes that his poems which were born out of him stored creativity to people who lead busy and tiring life, and are in need of creativity, while the speaker in Keats’ poem believes that his poems are like tools to write down what
The poem A Step Away From Them by Frank O’Hara has five stanzas written in a free verse format with no distinguishable rhyme scheme or meter. The poem uses the following asymmetrical line structure “14-10-9-13-3” while using poetic devices such as enjambment, imagery, and allusion to create each stanza. A Step Away From Them occurs in one place, New York City. We know this because of the lines, “On/ to Times Square, / where the sign/blows smoke over my head” (13-14) and “the Manhattan Storage Warehouse.”
