As teachers, in order to contribute to our learners’ knowledge, we basically take into account two crucial factors in teaching language. One is educational setting and the available resources; the other is our learners’ characteristics, needs, proficiency level, and language background and so on. In this respect, our teaching methodology is influenced by many variables; however; the most significant and the difficult oneis the latter, which teachers have to take into account in the first place. Trying to learn as much as possible about our learners’ needs, interests and characteristics will help us design effective lessons which the teaching and learning can take place. However, this raises the question of “howdo we get information about them?”

At first, teacher should prove her/his teaching desire to students through asking formal questions such as the reason of taking her/his class, their expectations from the course and the teacher, the points that might need to be improved in order to contribute their learning. As asking these questions, students will see the teacher’s effort to communicate about their learning process. After this step, we can ask more personal questions if they want to share by keeping in mind the sensitive issues such as family relations and economic problems which are commonly encountered problemsnowadays and affect students’ academic and social life. Thus,we should be careful about questions which aim to point these problems unless the students have a desire to share.
Beyond these getting to know strategies, the discipline of language teaching involves various fun getting to know activities which help us learn more about our students such as “two truths and a lie” and “who am I”. These activities enable both teachers and students get to know each other particularly at the first days of
