Please describe any personal characteristics which you possess that make you qualified to be a Resident Assistant. What skills do you possess and what experiences have you had that might enhance your candidacy for the Resident Assistant position?
It is an extraordinary honor to be considered as a candidate for the National Honor Society. Being considered means I have achieved my goal in demonstrating my determination- in school and outside of school- and my willingness to aid people in my community. Being a part of such a prestigious organization is an enormous responsibility to which I will fully devote my time. Ever since I was a freshman, my goal was to work diligently to be among the highest scholars and to be accepted into this scholarly “hall of fame”. Through my relentless hard work and perseverance, I believe that I possess the four characteristics of a National Honor Society member- leadership, service, character, and scholarship.
My heart began to race. I entered the spacious lecture hall, opened the door, and before me were two hundred students glancing at me. Entering the class for the first time at Florida International University (FIU) presented unparalleled opportunities on my forthcoming journey as a high school junior. When I enrolled at FIU as a dual enrollment student, I experienced uncertainty in regard to my intended major and career choice. I took courses across multiple disciplines, yet I remained remote from the ideas presented – until I met my professor for General Chemistry during my junior year. I enjoyed the class lectures, and I attended the professor’s office hours often that she asked me to become a learning assistant (LA) for the course.
Please accept my resume to showcase my interest in the position of Resident Assistant. I believe that I am an excellent candidate due to my leadership ability, my academic achievement, and my overall attitude.
The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and am aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My own passion for working with young children extends from my desire to emulate these role models and perform the same inspirational function in the lives of my students.
It happened five years ago as I sat in a crowded library study room with my fellow classmates at the University of Sheboygan in Sheboygan, WI. We were studying for our final exams for one of the toughest classes we had ever taken. What is this class you might be asking yourself? The class I am referring to is an Introduction to Psychology. After weeks of hard work and dedication I passed this challenging class with an A. This was one of my proudest achievements. I didn’t know back then, but psychology would become a huge part of my life. After graduating from UW-Sheboygan with my associate’s degree, I transferred over to UW-Oshkosh. I was struggling to pick a major so I decided to take a class designed to help students choose a major. One of our assignments was to take the strong interest inventory test. The Campus of Virginia Randolph is a school for children with mental disabilities and emotional disorders. I imagined an Instructional Assistant job meant that I would be assisting the Lead instructor with lesson planning and group projects. One of the unique aspects of the Department of Child Development and Family Relations is that many of the department’s large core courses offer teaching assistant opportunities to undergraduate students. Teaching assistant opportunities are valuable for undergraduate students to decide whether to apply as a graduate teaching position, great addition to a resume, and for a letter of recommendation. From my teaching assistant experience, I was able to fully grasp the concepts of middle childhood development, form a new appreciation for professors and teaching assistants, and reflect on myself as a student. One of my favorite memories growing up is how much time I spent reading. Whenever I got a new book I couldn 't put it down. I remember that I would always read on the bus ride home. Reading was something that I liked to do. As I’ve gotten older my choice of books has changed alot, a different genre for each of my phases. Today the books that always manage to get my attention are usually the books based on true events.
After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders. Even though my effort alone may not be significant to the society, I believe that my effort would at least support those in my surrounding.
As I began my field experience journey, I learned many roles and responsibilities as elementary teacher. My duration in the field was nine weeks. I began training at E. R. Dickson. I developed a great working relationship with the staff and parents in the community. I always knew teaching is my passion. It is my responsibility to be organized, willing to work well with others, takes initiative, and having a positive attitude. During my time in the field, I had a pleasure of working with 3rd graders. I learned to be a long life learner. Everyday, I was challenged my students to learn something new. It was important to me to make a difference. Throughout my training, I implemented various strategies for engaging students in small groups and rigorous lessons. My role as a teacher is to communicate effectively, be respectful, and have self-worth and confidence. I did fear making wrong choices throughout this field experience. I set high expectations the students to achieve high goals.
