2.4 The use of Authentic Materials in the Classroom Using unsuitable teaching materials make learners face difficulties in learning English. Learners need to be motivated to succeed in learning English; furthermore, teaching materials have to motivate and raise learners’ interest. If teaching materials are not enjoyable and motivating, learners will learn nothing. So, to help students learn better, using authentic materials is suggested by the researchers. Many researchers have studied the impact of authentic materials on learners and it shows that using authentic materials particularly in teaching English in classroom has been effective over the past decades. Thus, authentic material is useful to support language learning and teaching (Guariento and Morley, 2001; Patridge, 2001; Shrum and Glisan, 2000). Most of the researchers state that authentic materials help increase the learners motivation towards reading. For example, self-satisfaction and motivation show improvement after authentic texts is employed in the classroom (Otte, 2006 and Thanajaro, 2000). Authentic texts help motivate students learn English by making them feel that they are learning the real language (Guariento & Morely, 2001). Andragogy is the best approach for effective delivery and pedagogy, both approaches must be used to ensure effective delivery. We know the main pro of authentic assessment is that it allows the student to take what they’ve learned and apply it to everyday life. Students aren’t forced to just memorize facts that will fade away after a few days. They are able to demonstrate their creative side to show what they’ve learned. Students are able to also refine their writing and oral presentation skills through authentic assessment.
