It is with sincere interest that I am writing as an applicant for the online EdD in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Curriculum, Teaching, & Teacher Education within the School of Teaching and Learning. The following is my statement of purpose that I hope will give you a clear picture of my experiences, interests, and desires to become a doctoral student.
Everything has come together for this moment in my life where I am ready to pursue my doctoral degree. My childhood dream of becoming a teacher has come to fruition, but there have been some influential events along the way that have gotten me to this point where I am ready to further my career and make a positive impact in the education field.
The first influence that has affected me is my pre-service teacher

Teaching in a low income urban Dallas school exposed me to many aspects, including working with families, implementing behavior management systems, supporting English Language Learners, working with transient students, finding the importance of teacher camaraderie, and observing a strained administration. When I taught English abroad, some things I discovered were engagement strategies and play-based techniques to help learners be successful. In Breckenridge, Colorado, my elementary school was a close-knit community school. In this setting, I learned what it felt like to feel respected as a teacher. I also experienced working with a community of teachers who all pushed each other to use best practices to benefit learners. Finally, working in university settings as an Instructor has given me the greatest opportunity to learn and grow as I am now responsible for helping pre-service teachers be successful in the field. In addition to teaching, I am taking on more responsibilities to help our college and department. The best part has been getting to work with some very innovative, passionate faculty
A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.
I have taught many students over my career. I have always sought to encourage, support and motivate them so that they could create better lives for themselves. Teaching is an ideal profession to help others determine and reach their potential. And I know that I must continue to develop myself professionally in order to be a better teacher and educator My motivation is to study and research practical consultancy projects with schools and education policy organizations.
This job really taught me about the importance of children having a routine to follow as well as the impact teachers can have on a child’s life. After my first year in college, I realized that I wanted to gain more experience with children of all ages. Shortly after,
I was able to hone my ability to empathize, adapt, and connect with the students. This experience taught me the importance of providing a supportive and inclusive environment where each child feels valued and understood. I was blessed with having supportive colleagues that acted as mentors which played a crucial role in my own learning journey. Their guidance, patience, and confidence in my abilities helped me bypass the challenges of being a new to Canada and teaching. They pushed me to reflect on my teaching practices, provided constructive feedback, and helped me to constantly try to do better.
As a future teacher looking toward a time when I will be responsible for a classroom of my own, the prospects are terrifying. Students arrive in the classroom with various strengths and weaknesses with the expectation that I can and will teach them the given curriculum. Admittedly, some students will be easier to connect with and teach than others. This is not the fault of the students, but rather the fault of the teacher. However, this is not to say that the teacher should be held entirely responsible for the challenges that he/she may face and fail; but the teacher can surely be held responsible for coming to an expected challenge and failing due to lack of preparation or effort.
I believe each child is unique and deserves to receive the best education they can. Teaching is a very compassionate profession, and isn’t your typical forty hour Monday through Friday job. Today’s children are the future of our society, and as a future educator it is my desire to prepare those children for their future by encouraging respect, having an informal classroom, and allowing the student’s thinking process to help shape the classroom. Children are our future, and I believe the first step in getting them prepared is by having respect for themselves personally, peers and adults among them, and for all other things in their lives. In order for a student to respect me, I need to show the student that I respect them.
Spending late nights grading, dealing with parents, a teacher’s salary isn’t sufficient for the broad job descriptions they are responsible to meet. Although it takes someone with a loving heart to be a teacher, they are suppose to teach what will become of the future. Therefore wouldn’t they have the most important job? In addition to be a successful teacher, first teachers have to go school themselves. Moreover after comparing South Texas College, Texas State University and University of Rio Grande Valley based on my criteria of tuition cost, location, and strength of program, University of Rio Grande Valley would be my best choice in helping me pursue a career in interdisciplinary studies.
Ever since I was little, in sixth grade, I’ve known that I wanted to make some kind of impact on the world. I’ve known that I wanted people to know me, to love me and to remember me. I wanted to make such an impact on someone’s lives that they told strangers or even their kids about me. I realized this goal when I met one of the most influential men in my life, and no, before you assume things, it is not my father, although he does inspire me in many other ways. My sixth grade math teacher, Mr. Brewer, was and still is one of the goofiest people you could ever meet.
As a teacher I plan to be organized and consistent. With the children on this schedule, they will learn time management and consistency from me doing this. However, it is important to be a teacher because teachers are some of the people who are going to leave an impact on the students. Educators are the ones who are going to give life lessons, that in the long run, are going to teach us to be a better person. As children grow up, they will have many different teachers in their life, and one or two of them are going to make a huge difference in their life.
I myself am native speaker, and English is my second language, but if it would be me the kid who goes to school in America and everything I study at school is in english and not related to me in anyway, whether it is my language or my history then, of course I would need to learn my native language because I don’t live my homeland and this is my school now that will teach who I would be tomorrow, So yes I agree and support the school system that offers teaching kids their Native Language, because they are teaching kids who they are. I was doing observation at Minnesota Math and Science Academy “Charter School” for my other Education Class, and while I was observing their I realized that 80% of the students at the school belong to same ethnicity background, and I happen to the same question whether they teach kids their native language or
When I was a little girl I grew up sitting in the back of a classroom watching my mother teach English as a second language. She was a High School teacher in my own school. She even taught me English in 9th grade. I was an A student. My mom gave me my first B because she said, I was not participating enough in class.
As I mentioned previously, I was the first family member to attend college, and while my family was there to support me they really didn’t understand the college process. Mrs. Gaines is a prime example of how a teacher can make a difference in a student’s life, without her help I may not have attended a four year university, and instead I probably would have opted to go a different route. What she did had a lasting impact on my life and I would like to do the same for my students. Whether that means helping a student through the college process, or assisting them with a dilemma they are facing outside of school. I want to pay it forward by using the teaching skills Mrs. Gaines taught me as well as the experiences we had and bring them into my classroom.
I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. Teaching can leave a lasting impression in a child’s life and offers a special opportunity to shape the bright young minds of future generations. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.
I believe the goal of teaching is to treat each student fair and provide all students with the same learning goal along with differentiate strategies to support students of diversity and disabilities. My learning goals would be fair and equitable and constructed to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. As a teacher I will also motivate and encourage my future students to do their best. As a former track coach I am familiar with the importance to motivate and encourage your students to do their best. I believe students learn best when they are motivated and encouraged in and out of the classroom.
Fortunately I found solace in a select few teachers who cared for who I was. My math teacher for Algebra in freshman year, Ms. Abadir was a big influence on me. She was a very nice lady who helped in any way she could in the classroom. Whenever I needed help in class, she was willing to assist me solve it. I could tell Ms. Abadir cared for me since she always challenged me and was disappointed when I obtained a low grade (Gentry, Steenbergen-Hu & Choi, 2011, p. 111).
