Over the last few decades, there has been incredible amount of progression both culturally and technologically. It is evident that these two areas are interconnected; with every new idea and technology, cultural shifts follow. We’ve seen this with the printing press back in the 1400’s and 1500’s; with the advent of the printing press. Using the printing press, Martin Luther published his work on the 95 thesis’ and spread it to all of Europe - quickly causes a massive religious and cultural shift which rippled through 16th century Europe. This massive religious shift can be still seen today as he basically split the original Catholic church in half. More modernly, we have the internet. The internet, most undoubtedly, has become the

However, the cultural shift that has become apparent in recent years is less than appealing. In times of heated political times, and very complicated measures, people have become less progressive. Having ideas that are not of the majority is inherently bad. People who have different opinions are ridiculed, insulted, and in some cases - physically assaulted. A growing sense of victimization and political correctness has captivated the once ‘liberal’ party. I thought I was a liberal, but over the past few years I find myself drifting farther and farther. And with technology which we carry these ideas in our pockets daily, it only adds salt to the wounds. Rapid intolerance, on both sides of the political spectrum, has forced me to be in between. In a party that does not exist, one that values freedom of expression while simultaneously wars against traditional racial and sexist ideals. It was lonely at first, not many people were open to discussion with someone who sympathises and has values sourced from both parties. However, I find myself also finding many people who seem to be in the same predicament. I believe that this population will only continue to grow, while people begin to see through the media’s artificial smoke
The trend in congressional polarization overshadows the trends in public. While congressional moderates dissipate, moderates in the public “in the United States stands at its highest point in more than 75 years” according to polling (Smith). Many moderates ‘lean’ toward the left or right which causes the first problem in many polarization studies. Polarization means that constituents disperse from the center of the line to either or right into political parties, not necessarily radical, but many of these ‘leaners’ continue to vote on an issue to issue basis (Enns and Schuldt). Congressional polarization differs immensely; this trend appears more as sorting where partisans move to more “extreme ideologies” (Hill and Tausanovitch 1060).
When I attended Palmetto Boys State in June of 2017, there was one thing that I was told repeatedly since the first day: “You get out what you put in.” Before I attended, I roughly knew that Boys State was a government simulation program, and I was interested yet still unsure about the program. While it is a government simulation program, Boys State at its core teaches more than government and law. When I decided to follow the advice I was given and put in as much as I could, the week turned out to be one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Santee City, the city I had been placed in, did not have a great start to the week.
In everyday conversations a subject that frequently tends to arise is American politics. During these conversations a variation of sub topics often occur usually pertaining to the Army’s funding, elections, and the different political parties. One of these topics that tends to cause a lot of feuding is the different political parties. In my family alone, we partake in disputes based on our different political parties, I am a Democrat while my parents are Republican. Often, we participate in quarrels over different events that occur in society.
The Statement “Between 1870 and 1990, the United States underwent a great deal of political change, but most Americans experienced very little social change” is not entirely correct. The United States did encounter a lot of political change between 1870 and 1990, but the United States also encountered a lot of social change. Some examples of social change throughout American History are industrialization and urbanization, Progressive Era Reforms, and the Civil Rights movements. From 1870 to 1990 the United States experienced a great deal of political change but also experienced a great deal of social change.
Americans today are split between sides – one side favors movements such as Black Lives Matter, while the other often makes comments
Interestingly, I believe that these factors work in tandem when it comes to prompting critical elections that will eventually lead to realignment. Once the difficulties and the strain of the socioeconomic system reach the voters, they become cynical of the current situation. They turn to a radical approach to incite change. What’s more radical than completely switching to a party that you previously saw as an antithesis to your ideology? It is human nature to look to change something that has not been working.
They Say, I Say: Chapter Thirteen Exercise 1: • Conventional wisdom claims that internet use is harmful for the brain, and that Americans, mostly millennials, spend too much time on social media and other forms of the Web. In Chapter Thirteen of “They Say\I Say”: IMHO, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein explains the debate of social media and its effect on students’ ability to read, write, and communicate, also explain that conversations that occur on the Web are not real conversations. Technology is a tool; it should not overwhelm the user. The internet not a dynamic entity with malign or benign intent. The proper utilization of it, however, has improved educations and it should be viewed as a accomplishment of the human mind for improving the human mind. Technology, and most often the Internet, is construed as a malign unit, whose purpose is to corrupt and stultify thought.
The Reformation largely influences his work and he noted the shift in Europe’s economic centre following this, away from Catholic countries, for example France, towards protestant countries, for
In the United States there are two major parties involved in our political structure, Democrats and Republicans. Since 1836, these two parties have dominated the political scene and Democrats and Republicans have controlled Congress and the presidency since 1860. Now, within these two parties there are people with progressive and conservative ideologies. These ideologies are not confined to only one political party, but instead are largely based on the individual’s opinion and perspective. Generally speaking though, most conservatives are Republicans and most progressives are Democrats.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
Clay Shirky, the author of “Does the internet make you smarter?” wrote about how ignorance has poisoned the internet with incorrect information. Not only does technology has its flaws, but so do books and novels dating back to the Protestant Reformation. Even though many people are against the internet Shirky reassures that if used correctly and appropriately, then it can become a very useful tool that can “tap our cognitive surplus”. The increased collaboration of technology is important to society for the reason that the internet is full of valuable knowledge that can be claimed very quickly and easily. Increased collaboration is absolutely a benefit.
This happened in 1517 when he posted the 95 Theses on Castle Church door. His “95 theses” which suggested 2 central beliefs: that the bible was the center of religious authority and that you can only reach salvation through faith and not by your actions- which sparked the reformation. Even though these issues had been brought up before he set them into order at that moment and the Catholic Church was divided. He had done this to prove that the Catholic Church was Corrupt. As a result some of his followers broke off from the Catholic Church and started the Lutheran Church.
Finally, it will be argued that the modern political party system in the United States is a two-party system dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. These two parties have won every United States presidential election since 1852 and have controlled the United States Congress since 1856. The Democratic Party generally positions itself as centre-left in American politics and supports a modern American liberal platform, while the Republican Party generally positions itself as centre-right and supports a modern American conservative platform. (Nichols, 1967)
In his Farewell Address, George Washington warned Americans about the effects of political polarization, saying,“One of the expedients of party to acquire influence, within particular districts, is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts.” Polarization is the division into two sharply contrasting groups or sets of opinions or beliefs. The political gap between Democrats and Republicans has been a growing problem but has seemed to get increasingly worse in recent years. Although the two-party system can help create balance within the government, political polarization is detrimental to American society because it causes tension between citizens and effects our daily lives. Ideological differences are visibly the main
This strong disagreement among Catholics led them to reform the church. The Renaissance influenced people to believe that the church was no longer the
