The Role of Technology in Dictatorship
In digital era, people have become heavily depended on the breakthrough and innovative technology. Each individual is engaged with the modern technology or so-called the World of High-tech in some ways range from making just a simple phone call to using social media. Because of the tremendous benefit it provides outweigh the catastrophe, people tend to overlook the dark side of it which might even result in threatening human survival. Thus, the users need to be aware of its potential danger or how technology can be used to harm people well-being in order to prevent further problem occurred from technology.

Likewise, in 1984 book written by George Orwell in 1948, technology was used by Big Brother to spread its power over the Oceania to control and manipulate the entire population (Khanna, 2015). In every household and even public places like canteen contain a mental square telescreen, that could not be turned off completely. The telescreen is not just a useless mental, it contained a microphone inside which purposely placed to spy on every word the citizens say. The telescreen also enable the Thought police to watch every individual at any time of day or night (Orwell, 2008, p.2). The moral of the story simply illustrates that technology which has been viewed as a tool to initiate positive change can also be used to facilitate morally wrong ambitious (SparkNotes Editors, 2007). Similarly, in real life, technology has begun to approach the level of spying seen in 1984. As technology is getting better, it is becoming easier for dictator to watch and record every move of their own population. In addition, technology should not be used up to the point that invading individual privacy even for security purpose. Though national security as a whole might seem more crucial than privacy, the right of every individual should be considered as more important for several reasons. First and foremost, to prevent the existence of excessive totalitarianism. According to , if the individuals knew their actions are being observed, most of them find it much harder to do anything that stand apart and different from others (Solove, 2014). Then, they tend to follow the social norm and force themselves to live under control of dictatorship. Furthermore, privacy is essential because it is one of the key elements to guarantee the sustainability of relationship. James Rachels, for example, argues that “Privacy is an essential prerequisite for forming relationships” (McFarland, 2012). As already mentioned, people tend to behave differently toward their partner or even friends when they are under observation (McFarland, 2012). Therefore, without enough privacy, human being would not be able to conduct a normal human affair or social interchange. Moreover, the individual right to privacy is incredibly important because people can be humiliated easily without any restriction of individual information to the public access (McFarland, 2012).
