The main regulatory trends the Bills and the rest of the NFL focus on our health and safety regulations. The first trend impacting the Bills is concussion safety. Head injuries have become a popular topic of conversation and therefore the league wants to showcase that they are attempting to combat these types of injuries. The NFL has put into place a “Concussion Protocol Checklist”. These checklist is a list of medical tests doctors will perform on a player after he is deemed to potentially have a concussion. This was put into place to diagnose whether or not a player has a concussion and if he is able to return to the game. (NFL Health Playbook) 2. The second regulatory trend impacting the Bills is a focus on helmet safety. Like concussions, helmet safety has become another popular trend and the NFL has been conducting study to determine what helmets help to protect the players the most. The Bills, and every NFL team, are working with the NFL to ensure the safest helmets are used during games. (Helmet Testing
Even though the National Football league under Goodell 's leadership has maintained steady viewership growth and profit, Roger Goodell has handled the concussion epidemic of the NFL extremely poorly, in addition to handling the constant ethics issues with little regard. In the many instances of concussions in the NFL Goodell has given inadequate punishment to guilty parties. In addition, Roger Goodell has also handled the "Deflategate" scandal poorly by suspending Tom Brady, even after no solid evidence of wrongdoing. In recent years it has been discovered that American Football has a reampint concussion epidemic, that has caused long term brain damage. Goodell on several occasions has only punished players who take headshots, with fines ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 (according to ESPN), issued to multi-millionaire players, This policy gives no incentive for players to stop, for example player for the Miami Dolphins Matt Moore’s concussion.
This is one of the biggest advancements in helmet technology or one of the worst ones. In one perspective they provided more padding and protection for the football player. On the other hand it gave the players the ability to use it as a weapon on the field and gave them the confidence to hit other players with their head, where before they were scared to use their head. Once players found out they could use their heads they began to use it more often and in some instances these hits left players unconscious and concussed. Concussions are a bad deal in any sport and if a player is concussed and doesn 't say anything and gets another one it can lead to permanent or long term brain damage or in the most severe cases even
The NFL should research more on CTE and discover ways to prevent it. One way could be providing safety gear that could protect the players from concussions, which is a major cause of CTE. The NFL should also accept that there is a connection between playing football and getting CTE. Our brains are not genetically engineered to sustain an impact on our cranium, so players who suffer a concussion in a game should not be let back into the game until proper treatment is provided. Until this happens we cannot trust the NFL on anything
There was a fifty four percent drop in concussion rates from the testing of new helmets. After testing new helmets, they got down to a three percent rate of players who sustained concussions when playing football. The players had to use a brand of helmets called VSK4 but the brand had
In the past few years, the number of concussions per year has only spiked. The NFL calls it a “cultural change” in that the staff are more willing to report head injuries instead of neglecting them. However, to many like Christopher Nowinski- one of the founders of the Concussion Legacy foundation- this increase just shows that the NFL does not care to prevent head injuries, only treat them when they are developed. The number of concussions between the 2013 and 2014 season actually increased by 58
With the recent advances in technology the head injuries experienced by National Football League players has been made more noticeable to the public. So the public has raised an eyebrow, questioning who will take responsibility to battle the issue of brain injuries in the National Football League. This subject involving player safety isn’t anything new, “In fact, a quick search of historical press reports shows that football related concussions have been associated with deaths and debilitating injuries since the late 1800s”(Lange 178). In football one of the most important parts are player safety. In fact, players wear equipment such as helmets, to help prevent head injuries.
Concussions have been plagued NFL players during their careers and are now starting to affect them, even after they are done playing. The lasting effects of a concussion range from cognitive, to physical, as well as emotional symptoms. As a cause of these many concussions popping up in the league, many rules have changed and are making some aspects of the game illegal in terms of hitting. Even lining up in a certain position is not allowed, this is simply for the safety of the players. Getting a physical therapist on staff at all times to help athletes is required in the NFL.
Is Football too Dangerous Is football too dangerous? That is a question that a lot of parents ask themselves when their child wants to play football for school or a club. Football has been played for 138 years. The sport has evolved to help prevent head injuries by adding more gear, Making rules, and giving players a limit on how many concussions one player can have. Football is not too dangerous it should continue to be played across america.
I. Introduction A. Attention Graber: For many people there is nothing better on a crisp cool Sunday afternoon, than sitting down and enjoying a good football game. The NFL, hosts usually the football games people watch. Recently, however the NFL has had a huge conflict on its hands regarding player health and safety, specifically regarding repeated head injury and concussions. Research indicates, the NFL has not done enough to protect its players from the damage of repeated head injury B. Ethos Statement:
Generally people think that the NFL should adjust the game, and its rules to increase player safety, statistics clearly show that too much adjusting has been done and the NFL is suffering because of it. Too many rules have been changed for player safety and the current changes being discussed, like getting rid of the kickoff, are going to far and the game is not like it was. Players sign contracts and are aware of the risks they put themselves at when playing the game of football at a professional level. Referees are throwing more flags and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, is handing out a record high of fines. These adjustments by the National Football League are going too far and some rule changes need to be reverted back to their previous rules.
The NFL needs to follow the same concussion protocol as the lower levels of the sport. THe sport could be much safer and it should be much safer. Players deserve more protection and it should be much easier to play the sport without having any
Recently over the previous decades, concussions have increasingly received attention in the world of sports. A concussion is a serious head injury that can happen to any player, and in just about any sport. Indeed, it has been happening to a countless number of athletes for centuries. However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground has caused a concussion.
After researching this topic extensively as well as talking to Dr. Peter Deluca who now acts as the head team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles I have come to the conclusion that concussions are a problem that are not controllable by the NFL. Dr. Deluca explained that these athletes are using the most up to date technology in the world as far as their padding and helmets go and unless hitting is completely eliminated from the NFL concussions is a problem that you will see not only within the NFL but also with every contact sport. Major traumatic brain injuries are something that needs to be taken more seriously especially in youth sports as well as in highs school. I strongly believe that there is more that the NFL can do to help protect these athletes and these athletes should be compensated for the injures that they sustain over the course of a given career. Some other things that I believe that NFL should consider to make the game safer include, Eliminating kickoffs, having a mandatory sit out period after sustaining a major traumatic brain injury, having more support programs for athletes who suffer from concussion issues such as short and long term memory loss and PTSD and lastly, Larger fines for helmet to helmet hits.
Research Project: NFL Concussions The project that I decided to research was concussions in sports, focusing on the National Football League. Though the NFL is famously known for being hammered with controversy surrounding concussions, they are trying to improve the health and safety measures to prevent them from happening, and to protect players. These measures are usually tagged with a term called “Concussion protocol”. This term has been thrown around for years by announcers, coaches, players, and probably the most by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. The health benefits of contact sports do not outweigh the risks of playing them. The leading causes of death and accidents in sports are caused by concussions.
