Rick Perry was elected governor of Texas in late 2000, when Governor George W. Bush resigned to become the president of the United States. Since I was allowed to choose one of ten governors from the modern era of the state government, I chose him for my essay because he has a great amount of integrity, he is a good man. Rick Perry was born on March 4, 1950. He is a wonderful man and he has been a great Texas Governor. But there is another reason that I selected him as my governor because from what I have read about him when he served as a governor of Texas from 2000-2015, there are some interested fact that caught my attention.
Ethos is equivalent to credibility. Waldinger clearly makes his audience believe what he says by explaining surveys which lead to really strong data. He also states several different quotes by Marc Twain, which provided important pieces of evidence and different perspectives to his speech. Waldinger also states different research facts building a stronger main point. Lastly, he explains one of the oldest and longest study ever, The Harvard study.
When Thoreau states in his opening line “that government is best which governs not at all” it sounds like the motto of the modern day Republican Party. Someone who refuses to pay taxes because of the actions of the government. For Thoreau it was the Mexican-American War and slavery. Today, it could be a Republican not wanting to pay taxes because the government will waste it on Obamacare or some welfare program. What is ironic is that Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” for much of the 19th century was ignored.
That’s why I can’t really call myself an Oxford man.’” (137-138) By lying about his past, Gatsby is further embellishing on his character as Jay Gatsby, rather than James Gatz. This further differentiates his character as Jay and separates him from his less powerful and wealthy past. The more people that were attending college and being educated, the more power and success was associated with higher education.
John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is known as one of the best presidents in American history. As every president does, after JFK got elected, he read his Inaugural Address on January 20, 1961. In his speech, Kennedy used many examples of patriotism to gain the support of Americans to fight and serve our country. Kennedy made it clear that it is an honor and an incredibly large responsibility to serve for our country. When Kennedy said, “In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.”
Money was also a motivating factor because I wanted to have a career that could pay well and secure my retirement that way I can build a family. From past experience working with investors I noticed that the majority of them are vehement about saving money and most of them had a college education. Lastly, the strongest motivating factor was my future career and interests. I have always enjoyed being a manager
Former President, Barack Obama, in his speech, “Remarks on Immigration Reform”, the purpose is to convey how immigrants impact society in positive ways, encourage us to strengthen our country in different ways regarding immigration, and to strike against politicians against immigrants. His rhetoric is so prosperous because of his effective use in logos, pathos, and language. President Obama announced on January 29,2013 an abounding amount of executive actions to assist eleven million immigrants protection against deportation. With actions being taken during presidency a plan of action was taken in place. Prioritizing enforcement against illegal criminals, giving an opportunity for people who are here for an education, and equal rights for those who are illegal to come out of the shadows for work.
Either from other countries, or manufacture weapons themselves. For Example, in the article, “The Assault Weapon Ban Should Not Be Reinstated”, the author states, “ Mexico has some of the strictest gun control laws on earth, yet a large number of weapons are smuggled in from other places.” Take this quote for example, mexico has strict gun laws, but there is still weapons getting into Mexico. People in America would do that. Another example from the article “Argument Against Gun Control”, the author states, “This is the newest iteration of the popular talking point that gun laws cannot work because criminals won 't follow them.
Secondly, Atticus knows that Maycomb is a racist town and that he will not win the trail but he still defends him to create change in the community. As Scout does not understand the racial segregation in Maycomb, she asks “Atticus, are we going to win it?’ ‘No, honey’ ‘then why-’ ‘simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 89). Even though they have a small chance of winning the trial, Atticus will take that chance because he wants to make a change which is removing racial boundaries. This proves Atticus has unshakable morals and is against racial segregation because Atticus does not want coloured people to be such poorly treated and is defending a coloured man to show this no matter what people say.
Finally, we have a candidate who understands this, Bernie Sanders. This is our chance to start a political revolution by voting for Sanders, who wants freedom and equality for all American citizens. Over the seventy-four years of his life, Bernie Sanders has gained the appropriate knowledge to lead our country,
In America we have had many presidents, they have done their job to get America this far. I would have to say that president Ronald Reagan would be my choice in who I think was the best President. I know I wasn 't alive when he was president but if I could I would like to live that time period. President Ronald Reagan was the 40th president. When president Reagan was elected on November 4, 1980 he was the oldest man ever elected at the age of 69.
Members of the Search Committee: As a member of the Harvard Law School Class of 1981, I recommend that Professor David Wilkins '80 be named to replace Martha Minow as HLS Dean. I have known David since we were both students at HLS. Back then, I was struck by his gregarious and effervescent personality; he was a real "people" person. Now, almost four decades later, I am compelled to recommend David as Dean precisely because he is such a people person, a quality that motivates him to identify issues and take action that an ordinary person would not, and which makes him uniquely qualified to lead the Law School. For a number of years, I practiced higher education law, and defended state universities in tenure disputes.
Our country was founded on the constitution and the way the government is stepping over the line with the Patriot Act is unreasonable. People need to speak out and defend our rights so that we don’t become a martial law country. Martial law country is basically where the constitution is suspended, and you have no freedom of speech, no freedom of the press, no freedom of assembly and you could be arrested at any time for any reason whatsoever. The military would be completely in control (Synder, 2015). This is a very scary thought that in our country there would be no rights.
Martin Luther King Martin Luther King harped on civil disobedience for any moral arguments. Treating citizens differently based on skin color was nefarious, King wished to speak out to change but insisted on non-violent acts to do so. He expressed his thoughts in the “I Have a Dream” speech publically in a passive fashion. This passionate, positive and encouraging speech flourished King’s views and changed the American government’s unjust laws.
