Teen Depression Awareness Depression The Mayo Clinic states that, “Teen depression is a serious mental health problem that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in activities. It affects how a teenager thinks, feels and behaves, and it can cause emotional, functional and physical problems” (Mayo Clinic). Society is fortunate enough that today’s society has grown more aware of teen depression and focuses not only on teen’s individual problems, but the crippling depression that result from those underlying issues. Most people mistake depression because one day of sadness rather than the constant feeling. Something that here in this time period people believe in, is that we all have one single type of depression, but in fact there is a situational depression and there is a mental illness depression. Some teens, as well as adults, actually have depression, but the majority of these teenagers do not want to have the feeling of overwhelming sadness, so they ignore all situations that may involve this feeling. A main coping method for depression can be peer support. “Peer support has been found to decrease isolation, reduce stress, increase the sharing of health information and provide role models…” (Rick Nauert PhD). Teenager’s friends can help them talk through it and let them vent. This is a good way no to only let things off their chest but to also get great advice from you peers. All teenagers will eventually or could have a breakdown if they keep all their information and feelings in to themselves. So, a great way is to talk to their friends about the troubles they are facing. An additional way for teens to get help by their peers is to just go out and have fun.
