Depression is becoming more common among teens, especially teenage girls. Teens are having to constantly hide their feelings among peers who may feel the same. Having to deal with life, school, and in a constant competition to stay the best can have serious affects on a teen. Researchers are finding that the rate of depression has increased, and is continuing to grow. Teenage depression is more aggressive and is growing by the days.
The rate of depression among teenage girls varies from five to 28 percent, depending on the girl, (Sad teenage girls are becoming more so, Par. 1). About 15 to 18 percent experience some symptoms of depression at any give time. The rate of girls compared to boys is doubled. Many things can trigger depression such as, early sexual relations, drug usage, and alcohol abuse.(Sad teenage girls are becoming more so, Par. 5). With most girls having sex at early ages birth control can play a factor in depression. Not only can that play a factor, but a for a growing woman, her surroundings can affect her in many ways.

One of the leading causes of suicide among teenagers is depressions, they feel as though they are alone, and nothing will get better, so instead of fixing a problem, they find ending it all is the answer. There are many signs to detect that someone is suffering from depression. They may show the following: changes in mood such as anxiety, unhappiness, sadness, mood swings, inability to feel pleasure, or loss in interest. They may also have excessive crying, irritability, social isolation, weight gain or loss is common, so is lack of concentration, slowness in activity and thought, or thoughts of suicide. Human development has interesting stages due to the changes in behaviour and growth of the body. Adolescent depression is a serious development issue which faces most households, hence requires proper attention. The occurrence of adolescent depression is most common in the modern society, though the impact of the depression has not been addressed adequately and may be significant. Many behavioural problems, for example, school dropout, drug abuse, unprotected sexual activity, suicide, self- inflicted injuries are the result of depression. Regular depression screening is important in the healthcare setting since it helps the physicians treat depression and employ recovery mechanisms for the patients.
Giving antidepressants to teens and adolescents is not the route to go when treating depression. According to the American Psychiatric Association depression is “a serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act” (Parekh). The possible cause of depression are “faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems” (Harvard). “Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in this United States, and the second leading cause of death between the ages of 15-34” (Suicide).
Depression is defined by the Mayo Clinic as “a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called…clinical depression, it affects how [a person feels, thinks and behaves] and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. [A sufferer] may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes [may feel as if their] life isn 't worth living” (2015). According to the textbook, approximately twenty percent of Americans will develop major depression in their lifetimes (Etaugh, Bridges, 2013). Among those twenty percent of Americans who suffer from major depression, “women are about twice as likely as men to develop” the condition (Nolen-Hoeksema 2001).
Many suicides could be linked with teen stress and responsibility. Teen responsibility can mean a lot of different things whether it is from getting/keeping a part-time job, being the “popular kid”, or just trying to keep grades up. All of these tasks are a lot easier said than done. It can get so stressful that someone doesn’t think it can be done and just gives up on life, and those around them. Sometimes having all that responsibility on top of normal chores and hormones can feel like WAY too much for one person to take and it might honestly feel like suicide is the only way

Teens tend to revert to social media, which can damage their self esteem, if used improperly. They have extraordinarily high levels of stress, which can cause them anxiety, one of the biggest mental illnesses in correlation with suicide, including depression, bipolar disorders, and insomnia. If a teen has any of these problems, they are four times more likely to commit suicide. Education and parents can put massive expectations upon them, and if they fail to meet those expectations, they will feel as if they are a failure. It is the third leading cause of death kids age 5-24 and can be preventable if schools and parents were to ask young adults questions about having suicidal thoughts and education on where to go to receive help.
There are a number a reasons why adolescent take their own lives, or even have thoughts of doing so. The possible mental illness him or her has, or their experience and perception of life has been pushed to the point where they cannot handle living anymore. Although it is said that suicide in adolescents and young adults is ridiculous, and that they are being selfish, but wanting to end their own lives happens to them too. Types of Suicide
The main reason why someone would commit suicide or at least attempt is to eliminate their emotional, physical, and/or mental pain. “Suicide remains among the leading causes of death of children under 14. Children are more likely to see of experience bullying when they are in middle school or junior high. Because of their exposure, they are harmed in any way or form.
Teens should be given an environment where they feel comfortable telling someone how they feel. A key component in preventing teen suicide linked to depression is for the teens to feel socially connected to others, this protection factor has been linked directly to positive emotional health. Depression often stems from isolation, if teenagers are given a place where they no longer feel isolated, in essence, this could allow for reduction in the number of depression diagnosis’s and essentially leading to less teenage lives
Suicide and Self-harm is one of the main leading causes in youth deaths in today 's society. The thought of ending his or her life is one of the thoughts developing in teenagers’ minds around the globe. There are many reasons to why a person will put their life at risk, such as stress, depression, loss of a loved one, or being bullied. Constant use of drugs or alcohol is also another leading cause to a person to have suicidal thoughts/actions. Teenagers sometimes had a period of depressing. They are usually stressed over something, such as some of them witnessing the pressure that was coming from all around their surroundings. The hardship of suicidal people have imagining a resolution to their sorrow is due in part to the misrepresented thinking caused by depression. The unimaginable pain the person is going to lead them to take their own life with frustration. A person with depression usually does not has the similar thinking with a healthy person.
