Since the time of 8th century B.C.E., the story of the significant hero Odysseus has been told by Homer in the epic poem, The Odyssey. It is broken down into 24 books, which separate each part of the story. The first four books are called The Telemachy, where Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, struggles when suitors arrive, ill-mannered intruders who covet Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. Odysseus’ importance is shown when in his absence, problems arise such as Telemachus’ sheepish personality, an infestation of suitors, and also shown when even the Gods and other kings recognize and respect Odysseus.

After Odysseus reveals himself and they start fighting, Telemachus kills a suitor just to save his father. Odysseus loves his family and would fight till the death to save them. In “The Odyssey” written by Homer, it shows how much Odysseus cares about Penelope just to risk his life to be with her. All through The Odyssey, the characters develop in a certain way that interchanges the outcome of the book. Telemachus developed into a mature man who could deal with any problem in his father’s absence. However, based on the story, it is evident that, Telemachus demonstrates a great change basing upon the times the characters were away from Ithaca.

He argues to the suitors about disrespecting his father Odysseus’ home even though they think Odysseus is dead and will never come home. Telemachus’ speech was effective because it showed pathos, logos, and ethos. Telemachus looks and acts the part of his father, astonishing those who presumably knew him as a boy.
The Odyssey : Book 4 Throughout the story, Telemachus changed drastically from who he once was. At the beginning of The Odyssey, the son of Odysseus was viewed as a scared and cowardly young man who was unsure of himself and lacked a fatherly figure in his life. It took the great goddess Athena to come along and install courage inside of him. Since he had to go on this journey, the young leader gathered traits that would help him in the long run. Telemachus gained faith and pride in his father Odysseus when he realized that even though this man didn’t die a war hero and no one knew what happened to him, he was still an incredibly intelligent man that was admired by everyone.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.
The Odyssey by Homer revolves around the character, Odysseus, and his ten-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. As the epic’s idol, he displays the combination of a clever, handsome, and courageous man popular among the mortals as well as the gods. Essentially, he embodies the ideals of the ancient Greek culture, being adorned with many favored characteristics of the era. However, an intriguing aspect of Odysseus lies in his personality. As the protagonist, he does not manifest the entirety of a stereotypical hero because Odysseus has a fatal flaw—his arrogance.
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
The Odyssey by Homer is a book that involves the Journey of Odysseus and his men and the Obstacles they come across. The Odyssey portrays many themes including vengeance, hospitality, courage, bravery and more. Odysseus experiences some good and bad during his journey. He comes across people who help him, but also comes across creatures who hold him back. Odysseus is an Epic hero because of his quick thinking skills, bravery, and confidence for himself and his men.
Odysseus’s Traits Throughout the Odyssey, the main character Odysseus goes on an epic adventure with his focus being to get home to his wife Penelope, and his son Telemachus. He faces many obstacles dealing with characters such as the Cyclopes, Poseidon, Aeolus, Athena, Helios, Calypso, Zeus, Hermes, Scylla, and Circe. Odysseus’s men are some of the most valuable people to him throughout the Odyssey. He always puts himself in front of danger for them to protect them even though they all died from an unexpected turn of events soon before he returns home. When Odysseus comes home he greets his twenty year old son and straightens things out on his homeland, Ithaca.
Odysseus is a man of great honor, and follows his father’s teachings which made him a person of greatness. In “The Odyssey” the position of men is very important, especially men who were known to have strength and courage. It was an honor to be a son, whom followed their father’s noble achievements and exhibited the skills that they were taught. In “The Odyssey”, it is not surprising that the relationship of Odysseus and Telemachus, is admiring as it is; Telemachus is proud of his son, who show such promise, and the Odysseus is proud of their father, who have earned a respectable reputation as a warrior who defended their territory bravely. It is amazing how the actions of a father can shape the future of his son.
