Societies have become accustomed to change that Government systems bring about for each particular nation. Democracy, however can be practiced and promoted in many different ways especially if people are given the right to make decisions concerning their rights. This essay therefore attempts to assess why democracy is a preferred form of government. Thereafter, analyse the pillars of democracy and the tenets of good governance. The essay will start by giving a brief background and definitions of the key concepts in our discussion, thereafter analyse the future of democratic governance with regard to the demand and supply of this form of government. Finally, conclusion will be drawn.
The world Bank defines Governance as “the manner in which power is exercised in the management of a country’s economic and social development” (World Bank, 1994). Governance looks at how political leaders in a country manage their power in promoting social and economic development in different sectors such as health and education. On the other hand, government can be defined as a system by which people in a country are governed. The government has the power to rule a territory like Zambia following the laid down laws.
