Territorial expansion and national unity from 1800-1850 involved many events. Western expansion boosted national unity at first, spurred the issue of slavery, and created extreme sectionalism between the north and the south. There are many events that helped boost national unity like the Louisiana Purchase, Manifest Destiny, Era of Good Feelings, and the Monroe Doctrine. The United States needed more land in order to continue moving out West. Jefferson was concerned that no land would mean a disunion in the United States, which is why we bought Louisiana for $15 million. The Manifest Destiny was a phrase that was used to describe America’s westward expansion. The Louisiana Purchase kicked off the movement out West and that’s what we called …show more content…
Some of those events include the Second Great Awakening, Northwest Ordinance, “King Cotton”, and the north favoring tariff. The Second Great Awakening was a series of religious revivals based on Methodism and Baptism and mainly attracted women, blacks, and Native Americans. The Second Great Awakening was the cause of the radical abolitionism who were activists against slavery. This helped create the divide between the north and south. The Northwest Ordinance defined the process where new states could be admitted into the Union from the Northwest territory. The ordinance did forbid slavery, but allowed citizens of the new land vote on slavery once it was established land. This also helped greatly separate the two. King Cotton was a phrase that southern authors used to show the economic dominance of the southern cotton industry. Basically, the north needed the south’s cotton so they would say cotton is King. The Tariff of Abominations was created to protect American industry from cheaper British commodities. The south opposed this because increasing the taxes on british imports made it difficult for Britain to pay for the cotton they imported from the south. This then related to the making of the cotton gin which led to controversy over slavery. This provided sectionalism over the tariff and why the north wasn’t as taxed as the
Lauren Williams Period 11 Group 5 The United States was united by the addition of states through Manifest Destiny and territorial expansion, which inflicted feelings of Nationalism, until the existence of slavery was threatened. Disagreements over whether the newly acquired territory should be slave or free led to the Kansas – Nebraska Act, which did not prevent slave rebellions or the Wilmot Proviso that proposed the outlawing of slavery.
Manifest Destiny was a phrase that was made up by journalist John L. O’sullivan back in 1844. The United States wanted to push westward to the frontier such as Texas, California, and Oregon. The reason behind Manifest Destiny was to expand to provide new places to live and jobs. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the Americans could extend themselves from coast to coast. The way Americans conquered the new land were removing the Native Americans from their land.
While the economy of the North relied on fishing, trading, and textiles, the South had to make do with their “primitive” agricultural methods with the use of slavery. John was finally seeing through Henry’s clever scheme. Tariffs would prevent additional taxes from being places which make them cheaper, and more desirable, than foreign goods. This didn’t apply in the South. John was afraid that these tariffs would end up making foreign products even more expensive thereby damaging the South’s
After the Civil War ended many people were in hope of finding land since population was increasing. Since the West was underdeveloped and uncivilized, many decided to expand the land. First the Louisiana Purchase increased the opportunity of expansion. Then industrialization and the Homestead Act also caused many companies encouraged to move West due to the low cost of land and that the transportation was provided through the railroads. In order to complete such goals, something had to be done with the Natives since it conflicted with their home area.
To start off, a major cause of sectionalism during 1815 to 1860 would be economical differences between the south and north. Their difference would divide the two regions which included industrialization and agriculture. The north would be rebuilt quickly with new transportation and manufacturing.
Outburst Westward Expansion during the 19th Century time frame. After the War of 1812 and the Civil War the American started moving to the west including the Great Plains as per the request of the government. The Native Americans, which helped expand, pass the Mississippi River, this move began with just one word move west young man, and they did. These Immigrants came to the land of plenty. The idea of an American "empire" and "imperialism" (American History 1865-Present: End of Isolation) 1865 to 1914 American expansion was encouraged in this time frame.
The westward expansion of of the U.S. began to happen around the 1800s. during that time the social opportunities increased since many people moved to the west because the government was paying them or giving them free land. The political opportunities did not increased as much since most of the people moving westwards were poor or immigrants and only white males had the right to participate in those events. The economic opportunities increased for the people who moved westward because of the gold rush and the opportu tires that were provided.
The Westward Expansion all started when America made the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. There were many benefits from the purchase for the US that the French didn’t realize before they sold it. The purchase gave the US access to the Mississippi river which allowed for expansion of river trade to the North and South from the center of the US. The port city of New Orleans was bought by the US and its prosperity benefited the US greatly. The US sent Lewis and Clark west to investigate the land they purchased.
Thesis Both Nationalism and Sectionalism developed concurrently during the Era of Good Feelings. The two main reasons why nationalism increased was because of Henry Clay’s American System and Monroe’s policy to increase nationalism. Clay’s AS created a better national infrastructure that tightened America together. Monroe’s policy was to promote national unity and America’s power, which strengthens nationalism.
That is just one of many reasons there was Westward Expansion. Overpopulation, new inventions of transportation methods, and new opportunities. These are three of many reasons why Americans in the 1800’s felt urged to move west. Some may claim that Westward expansion was not right for America to do because of the conflicts that were aroused afterward.
Was American expansion justified during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s? This was a debate that Americans fought over then and still now fight over now. There were two types of people some were for expansion and others were against expansion of the U.S. Both sides of the story will be well explained in this essay. First, this will explain the people for expansion’s side.
The United States American expansionism in the 1890's was motivated by the search of new markets and investment opportunities. Businesses created the expansion because the economy was so prosperous at this time. Mechanization and mass production allowed the industries in America to grow, which led to the growth of business, consumer goods and the overall American corporation. According to the textbook, the businesses interest shaped diplomatic and military strategy. Additionally, farm production increased, transportation systems improved and railroads were a significant factor.
When the Great Depression came to an end and the U.S. economy recovered, a plethora of new problems arose in Europe and Asia. One country in particular was Germany who suffered greatly after World War I because of the requirements made in the Treaty of Versailles. The Nazi Party, led by Adolf Hitler, came into power shortly and promised to bring greatness back into Germany with the concept of totalitarianism. In Asia, Japan increased its aggressive nature by overtaking many nations as well as attacking China under Hirohito. After Germany attacked many European countries and Japan surprise attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States, Britain and France were at war with the opposing forces.
The Civil War allowed the United States to make the changes necessary to unify the country. In addition, it began one of the most transitional periods in the United States’ history. This period, the Reconstruction, brought about many political, social, and economic changes, which were both beneficial and disagreeable. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, the Panic of 1873, and the formation of the Ku Klux Klan are just a few examples of heavily impacting events for the United States. During the Reconstruction period there were numerous political transformations in the country.
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
