18. The estimation or calculation of losses caused terrorist attacks in Kenya may differ widely. Nevertheless, common ground that the criteria of economic costs comprise four major dimensions exists .Those dimensions distinguish costs according to their nature, time period, impact and geographical range of impact. Another dimension that is sometimes added is the differentiation in targets of attacks . Distinguish in this regard between government, businesses and individuals . These costs or effects can be expressed at both macroeconomics and microeconomics levels with direct or indirect aspects. 19. The last dimension that is used in academic literature refers to the distinction of costs in macroeconomic or sectoral economic realms . The …show more content…
Terrorists continued to destabilize Kenya. On Thursday, 28 November 2002, a squad of terrorists linked to Al Quaeda detonated explosives at the Paradise Hotel in Kikambala on the North Coast of Kenya which caused a great loss of people’s lives. The hotel was hit and was severely damaged and losses were huge. Sixteen people died in the hotel attack, including three suicide bombers. Simultaneously, two rocket propelled grenades were fired at an Israeli airliner at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa . As you can analyze, terrorism in Kenya did not receive proper response from the authorities and this enable it thrive. As per now, It sounds difficult to counter it despite laws and counter-terrorism measures that the current Kenyan Government is trying to implement. It would be early and eventually unscientific to predict that terrorism will be completely defeated in next few years. That said, there is a strong need to restructure security institutions in the …show more content…
The two terrorist attacks on Kenya in 1998 and 2002 have had many negative economic, social, political and geopolitical effects on the country. Among the effects of terrorism, some may be the decline of the tourism industry ,increased loss of jobs, foreign exchange, growing miss concordance between Christians and Muslims, radicalicalization of the Muslims of the country, rising anti-Western sentiments in the Muslims and general population, the passage of unpopular anti-terrorist measures that threaten Kenyan’s human , civil and political rights besides eroding the sovereignty of the country and the tension was raised between Kenya and
Terrorism was flourishing in 1960’s America. Nearly every chapter of this book documents acts of terrorism by white people against black people: a leader’s house bombed, a protestor’s face smashed, girls going to church blown up, and finally, of course, Martin himself getting assassinated. MLK Jr. was not a moderate, at least in the last few years of his life, post-1965. At this point, he observed that the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill and the 1965 Voting Rights Act didn’t effect change of the type he was hoping for. He remained an advocate for nonviolence, but when riots broke out, he disclaimed their methods, but did not let society off the hook, claiming “riots are caused by nice, gentle, timid white moderates who are more concerned
A great terror struck our nation September 11, 2001, two aircraft’s hit the world trade centers, killing 2000 people and injuring over twice as many. A third aircraft flew into the Pentagon while a fourth crashed in a rural area in Pennsylvania. This day will forever be engrained into history as one of the worst terror attacks faced in this nation. Nearly three years later, in an attempt to figure out what happened on that tragic day, scholars came together to discuss the possible parallels between foreign and domestic terrorist. The author, Michael Kimmel, outlines the possible cause of the 2001 attacks and offers us a link between both foreign and domestic terrorism.
The events of 9/11 were a highly significant tragedy that had profound global implications. The attacks on the Twin Towers resulted in an immense loss of life, with 2,977 deaths, numerous casualties, and extensive destruction. Beyond the immediate human toll, the attacks triggered far-reaching changes in society and government. They prompted violent military responses and led to the establishment of Homeland Security in the US, accompanied by counter-terrorism campaigns and the enactment of the USA Patriot Act under President George Bush. Moreover, the attacks harmed Islamic views, increasing stereotypes and biases.
The Passengers of United Flight 93 On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, members of al Qaeda hijacked and crashed four American airliners. This attack on American soil resulted in nearly 1.4 million pounds of debris. The financial impact in New York alone was over $30.5 billion dollars (“22 Facts About 9/11”). It lead to three thousand deaths, including the deaths of first responders such as firemen and policemen (“9/11 Attacks”).
The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 had an enormous impact all across the United States. Since this life changing event the United States has taken extreme measures to ensure the safety of all American citizens. This deadly attack has led to many changes in Immigration and security (Krikorian 567). It has also contributed to the unnecessary judgements against ethnic backgrounds and religion (Chavez 563). The increase of racial profiling, fear and paranoia, upgrades in security, and decrease in immigration are all factors that contribute to the results of 9/11.
On April 19th, 1995 Timothy McVeigh parked a rental Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, and lit a short fuse to a bomb on the truck that caused a huge explosion. The bombing killed 168 people, including 19 children that were in a daycare center within the building, and caused over 600 injuries. The Oklahoma City bombing is considered to be the worst domestic terroristic event in our nation’s history. On April 20th, 1995 the rear axle to the rental Ryder truck was discovered with a vehicle identification number that aided law enforcement to the location of where the rental truck was from. The truck was rented from a location in Junction City, Kansas, where employees at the rental shop were able to help authorities
Rough Draft: After the 9/11 attack many Americans have come to realize what terrorism really is, but for the kids that 9/11 was history to here you go. Terrorism today is the use of violence usually against other countries aimed towards politics. Targeting terrorist leaders might not make much difference, but it is cheap, it is low risk for the United States (Fisher,par.18). According to Max Fisher’s article going after terrorist leaders isn’t always the best, well the U.S. did that for the 9/11 attack, we ended up killing Osama Bin Laden the man who planned 9/11 out. Terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the Jihadist are a threat to mankind.
To start off the main point of my essay, I learned several important things regarding terrorism. There are many different types of terrorism, such as state-sponsored terrorism, criminal terrorism as well as dissent terrorism. There are many reasons terrorism has become commonplace in society, it can be that radical extremists do not like our way of life, and try to destroy it, or it can involve conflicts with territory, globalization, and finally criminal terrorist acts done by the drug cartel. Surprisingly, there is more political and social issues connected to terrorism than I originally thought. For instance, it is stated as a social construct, terrorism is used to demonize people, societies and situations.
In the Ethical Life, by Russ Shafer-Landau, chapters written by Michael Walzer and Alan Dershowitz express their knowledge and opinions on the topics of terrorism and torture. Is it possible to justify and defend such acts? In the chapter “Terrorism: A Critique of Excuses”, author Michael Walzer shuts down four excuses that attempt to justify terrorism. In the chapter, “Should the Ticking Bomb Terrorist Be Tortured?”, Alan Dershowitz defends his theory that it is necessary to torture a terrorist if that means saving the lives of innocent people while protecting their civil liberties and human rights at the same time. Terrorism can never be moral because it violates all “excuses” and torture is an acceptable tactic to save lives.
Terrorism in East African thrives in Somalia because of the leadership vacuum in the country. The policy to strength democracy will ensure that residents participate in leadership and change their perception on radicalism. In response to increased Al Shabab terrorist activities, the African Union has
Department of homeland security and Domestic Terrorism One of the major reasons why defining domestic terrorism has proved difficult is because different agencies approach terrorism with their different interpretations (White, 2013). The difference between the various definitions of domestic terrorism lies within the various descriptions given about terrorists’ motivations. White (2013) classified domestic terrorism as either those that are politically motivated or others that attempt greater specificity. It is however difficult to establish and define the motivations of terrorists. It is therefore necessary do in-depth analysis on terrorists’ motivation because their purpose reflects the methods and targets the terrorists are most likely to select.
After a terrorist attack of any kind there are always consequences that must be faced. Sometimes the point of the terrorist attacks is because the organization wished to send a message or to influence policy in their favor. However, after the 9/11 attacks administrators realized that the United States was not prepared for a tragedy of this kind and had little to no measures to prevent one, this lead them to create new programs and policies. Terrorist organization’s goal often comes down to one of the following: regime change, territorial change, policy change, social control and status quo maintenance. The main purpose of a terror attack may well be to influence public policy.
Every day we hear about a mass shooting, or treats to our country. Out of sight out of mind until it happens to you or someone you know. On 9/11, millions of lives where changed and us as a country needed change, change for our futures protection. We learned that we needed to become more knowledgeable about terrorist methods, and how better to respond to such attacks. As a country involved in everyone else’s issues it brings attention to North America.
Terrorist attacks have been taking place from a long period of time. These attacks have been set and planned to plant terror and fear in the people’s hearts. Recent terrorist attacks are taking place and many different countries have been working together in order to eliminate this threat. A famous terrorist attack that took place in the USA is the attack of 9/11 on the two world trade centers, the pentagon and other areas. This attack has threatened the western countries ever since.
What happens in a terrorist attack affects many people in the world. The aftermath of an attack is what has the largest impact on people’s lives. However, terrorism does not have the same effect on everyone. The threat is not taken as seriously by some people. Some might think that it is an empty threat, but others might think it is a serious threat.
