Preamble
The research work reported in this thesis was undertaken in the department of Home Science, The Gandhigram Rural Institute – Deemed University focusing on the digitization of traditional Indian textile designs. The research focus is on analysis of the effects on digitization of selective traditional Indian textiles identified as the most important under the revival of textile heritages and crafts.

The decentralized power loom / hosiery and knitting sector form the largest section of textile sector. The close connection of the manufacturing to agriculture and ancient culture, and society of the country make the Indian textile sector exceptional in assessment with the textile industries of other nations.
The major sub-sectors that are included in the textiles sector are the structured cotton / man-made fibre textiles mill industry, the man-made fibre / filament yarn industry, the wool and woolen textile industry, the sericulture and silk textile industry, handlooms, handicrafts, the jute and jute textile industry and textile exports.
India has a rich tradition in weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery and craftsmanship sustained by strong domestic market. The growth and development of cotton and cotton industry has a vital bearing on the development of the Indian economy. The use of cotton is more than 400 lakh bales (170 kg each) per annum. How has cotton contributed to the advancement of nations and shaped the world we live in today? Since there is not a single answer to this question, there are multiple factors to consider. In addition to playing a monumental role in the industrial revolution, cotton was responsible for stimulating further technological advancements. Moreover, cotton has made huge impacts in world history, such as leading to the Civil War, expanding poor factory conditions, and even leading to an alternate source of explosives (LeCouteur and Burreson 86). As demand for cotton rose during the industrial revolution, the textile industry was vastly transformed.
