Have you ever wondered how much impact one person could have on you? Roger in “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes had a major internal change. When Roger tries to take the purse of an older lady, Mrs. Jones, she catches the boy, not being very nice to him. In the end, she feels a connection with him because he can’t afford the things he wants, so she chooses to helps him. Mrs. Jones changes Roger by taking care of him and telling him right from wrong. She tells him about the mistakes she made when she was younger because she couldn’t get what she wanted, like Roger. At the beginning of the story, Roger was being a little mischievous because he tried snatching the purse of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Because of this, Mrs. Jones knocked him down and picked him up by collar of his shirt. For example, on page 1 it says, “She did not release him. ‘I’m very sorry, lady, I’m sorry,’ whispered the boy.” He was also very intimidated by Mrs. Jones and by the thought that she was going to turn him in, although she didn’t. Jones but he doesn’t know if he should trust her. He seemed confused as to why he was even in her house since she brought him there to wash his face and clean up, but yet, he didn’t want to leave. The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Langston Hughes portrays the male characters in his story a bit ignorant. In Hughes short story Thank You Ma’am, Roger, had the character of someone who wasn 't fully educated and informed about what is good and bad. No one was really at home to teach him all these things and how to be respectful and take care of himself. Roger doesn 't really know how to properly take care of himself and do the right thing. Roger snatched Mrs. Jones purse and thought he can get away with it because he has a habit of stealing and running away.

The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.
Roger, once selfish and dishonest, becomes more cooperative and polite. Her actions towards the boy influenced his actions. Mrs. Jones’s impact was first apparent when she had Roger stay and eat dinner with her. Scared and confused, Roger didn’t understand why she was being so hospitable even through he had tried stealing from her.
Jones is full of rage once he realizes Lutie does not want to be with him and contemplates how he can get back at her. His vengeful self is revealed as he proceeds to try to get Bub in trouble with the law and succeeds, impacting Lutie in a way that leaves her in hysterical tears. Bub being taken away from her was her worst fear that came to life because of someone else’s hatred for her. The final characters that affected Lutie’s life were Boots Smith and Junto. Junto held the key to her success in the palm of his hand but refused to help her unless she agreed to be with him.
