When people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, or some cliche along those lines. Heroes that save lives, stop an evil villain, or rescue their loved ones. However, the average, everyday person who defies the odds when placed in an extraordinary situation is a hero as well. The Princess Bride is a classic Hollywood film of a man returning after many years to rescue his true love with the help of some friends met along the way.
Freedom, opportunity, and sacrifice is what I think our country’s foundation consists of. Freedom for America didn’t come easy, America lost 3 wars, had one civil war, 1 nuclear war, and we have lost about 1.1 million soldiers in war. Our country has fought about 12 wars and are still fighting for what we think is “peace”. War hasn’t solved everything for this country but amongst all the fighting we have found other things to make this country thrive. In 1803 the US bought the Louisiana territory, that was the start of freedom in this country when people started to make
However, Chinese generals, due to the rapid expansion of the army in the summer of 1937, sent untrained reservists to the Nanjing front. The quality of these reservists was relatively low and there was a high replacement rate due to heavy losses. Moreover, Chinese generals made soldiers and civilians to stay in Nanjing which led to a horrible genocide. Also, they made up a minor part of the whole forces. Since the major army forces were not there, the minor parts could not defend Nanjing against the Japanese attack in an effective way.
Although, the Jurchens had more advantage since they had a large and effective army but they were hard pressed by both the Mongols and the Tangut. The jurchens drove the Chinese armies into retreat. The Mongols benefit from China failing during the previous century to make itself a strong military power, and from the Jurchens being burdened by their rule over conquered people who have conquered. The Mongols had an advantage diet, where they could miss one or two days without eating better than the Jurchen soldiers, who are grains. It was a hard time for them, however.
By the middle of the 14th century, the Yuan dynasty, run by the Mongols was in decline. Like all Chinese dynasties, it was coming to an end and the evidence that the rulers had lost the Mandate of Heaven was everywhere. The government was corrupt, spent too much money on wars, and they could not collect enough taxes from the population to provide them with the services to keep them content. In addition, many Chinese leaders grew tired of being ruled by the foreign Mongols. They wanted a return to China run by Chinese.
However, people in china lost confidence in the currency due to inadequate reserves of bullion for paper notes, which created a rise in prices. The diminished value of paper money became one of the major reasons for the decline of the Yuan dynasty. Although paper money was introduced at different times and for different reasons, under mongol rule, the decline of both empires was partly due to the loss of confidence in paper
Special Agent Leonard Hatton was on his way to work that fatal morning when the towers were struck and he responded immediately. Although Hatton wasn 't tasked with responding to emergencies he still went and saved many lives. He served the country as a Marian, a firefighter, an FBI agent(Heros to Remember) and he gave his life during the country’s time of need. Ordinary people came to do amazing things on this day including Tom Burnett who was the COO and vice president of Thoratec Corporation and was on flight 93 when he noticed it had been hijacked like the others. Himself and other passengers decided to fight back and gain control of the plane.
With already existing hostility towards the Chinese, the increasing encounters with Chinese laborers only strengthened the cause of the anti-Chinese movement among the unemployed white laborers. In 1877, when the financial market crashed, many people lost their life savings and were left either heavily in debt or impoverished. Thousands of unemployed men roamed the city competing for the little work that existed. Among those men was Denis Kearney. He had heavily invested in mining stocks and lost everything in the market crash.
“His world was turned around, but he decided to look on the loss of his leg as a new challenge.” (Scrivener,2000,p. 31). Terry Fox knocked down numerous obstacles in his lifetime, obstacles that only strong and optimistic people could overcome. He had become an inspiring role model. Terry Fox had shown the world that Canadians are filled with hope and
Chinese immigrants coming to Canada faced hardship after hardship from the long voyages, the expensive head tax, and the back-breaking jobs they had. It was not an easy journey to get from China to Canada. The Canadian government thought
The Wizard of Oz is an epic because it is a long story and has many heroes that will be remembered for their feats. In The Wizard of Oz, the epic characteristic of supernatural setting was shown. This was shown in the whole land of Oz, because this land isn’t any ordinary land, it has talking animals, and witches.
