The 1906 Earthquake

The Book I chose to explore was I Survived: The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906. Author and illustrated by Lauren Tarshis. I chose this book because I enjoyed the previous "I survived" novel that I read. This book is a Non-Fiction book because the events that occur in this book actually happened. Leo was an actual kid who experienced so much disaster that no one should have to go through. He couldn 't even scream because he was choking on dust and barley move because he was being crushed be falling bricks.

The mighty earthquake that devastated San Francisco was caused by the San Andrea's fault. In the early morning of Wednesday, the 18 of 1906 Many civilians were woken up by the sound of their walls crashing in on them. The first earthquake lasted about 80 seconds. Even people in other continents know what had happened and would remorse for days at a time. Loved ones were lost , over 100 years of history gone in 80 seconds.The earthquake also ignited several fires around the city that burned for three days and destroyed nearly 500 city blocks.

This was not the first earthquake in San Francisco. 1864, 1898, and 1900 were years of earthquakes striking but not as strong as 1906 (San Francisco of 1906, 1). The damage from the earthquake paled in comparison to the level of destruction that followed. The quake cost 3,000 people their lives and not only rattled the residences of San Francisco, but people from Oregon to L.A and as far inland as Nevada(history.com).

It is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, which lies on 43 picturesque hills. The landscape, trams, and distinctive wooden mansions give the city a unique charm. San Francisco is an outstanding representative of the physical geography. The essay aims to investigate the history of the region, the general features of four spheres of physical geography in San Francisco, and forms the possible representation of the future of the area.

Undoubtedly one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, set the stage for understanding earths forces and how to handle them effectively. San Francisco's transformation into a destroyed city, effective response to wide-spread disaster, and expensive reconstruction were all hurtles for the city to climb back to its previous economic power. Despite these challenges, San Francisco was able to rebuild itself into an even greater and more advanced power. The disaster was really bad for those who lost their lives and to those who were injured . During this time it made it hard for people to survive because of all the smoke and to those who lost their houses in the fire

The last Cascadia earthquake in the 1700s gave the people of that time five minutes to prepare before it happened. If this coming earthquake is similar then the citizens of the Pacific Northwest will not have a long warning before it hits. Cities will be underwater across the coast and the people caught in the chaos can only hope and pray that they will make it out alive. Across Oregon alone it is estimated to be over a million buildings in ruins. FEMA estimates that search-and-rescue teams will be sent out across a hundred thousand square miles of land and across four hundred and fifty-three miles off the coastline. With the sheer size of the affected area, it will be hard to find everyone in time to save them. The number of casualties predicted for the Cascadia Subduction Zone rupture is incredibly high. Almost twenty-seven thousand people will be injured and over thirteen thousand people will die during the earthquake and tsunami according to FEMA (2). With barely any earthquake and tsunami procedures, the Pacific Northwest is completely unprepared for the disaster waiting to happen. The solution: build on the few procedures that are already in place and then create new ones

t has been 145 years since one of today’s biggest cities was burned to the ground. One normal day in the city of Chicago, a fire started in the O’ Leary’s barn on October 8th, 1871. There was dry weather and most of the city was made from wood. With the wood, and the dry, windy weather, the city was very flammable. Once the fire started, it spread to the whole city. Sooner or later, the city was burnt to the ground. A couple days later, the fire stopped. There was a lot of people effected and a lot of damage done. The city builders learned their lesson.

Chines and other similar races had very difficult times back then 1900’s. They were discriminated and beaten. Both stories Dragonwings and “The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire” similar in ways and different in others. Overall they both portray the hard life of a chinese in the U.S. in the 1900’s.
