One of my relatively favored films that engrosses me every Halloween season is the
1980 horror film The Shining. This movie consists of drama, horror, mystery and suspense, produced
and directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick himself and novelist Stephen Edwin King. The Shining
focused on the broad strokes of the original Stephen King story, while the visuals, atmosphere, tone,
and sheer terror of the moments Stanley Kubrick caught on film were more than enough to scare most
people to the bone. That's the lasting impression that was left. The twins, the hotel itself and the way it
was shot, the isolation, the eerie transformation of Jack, the room 237, the blood pouring out of the
elevator and flooding the hall, Jack wanting to sabotage his wife and son with an

With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic
son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in town, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the
winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in
peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) encounters with
Jack to inform him that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family during the winter of
1970. Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine,
Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with
Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's
alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of murder as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked
visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own.
Frightened by her husband's amoral behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237,
The governess was forced to face her fears of the ghosts of Quint and Jessel when she decided that she would do anything to protect the
June is getting really scared at night and hates it. “In paragraph 41, for up example , the character gets scared at night.” June thinks that the other June is coming up her stairs into her room. (288)” Reb Saunders understands now what Danny has been through, what Danny has had to go through during his life. They understand much more about each other due to the silence and the uplifting. Through the silence, Reb Saunders starts to understand the pain he has caused to not only Danny, but everyone else that this silence has affected, hence his weak stature. Danny cries at this moment, because not only does he now understand his father, after twenty two years, but also because of the strong bond that they have now created through the silences, which wasn’t even intentional.

Halloween (1978), was written by John Carpenter in less than two weeks and had a budget of $325,000 however the cultural impact of this film has caused a gross $47,000,000 in the 40 years since it was released ("Halloween"). This film evolved into a major franchise of 10 movies with more on the way which was not Carpenter 's intention. The conversation that follows viewers after watching the movie is the reason why this iconic movie can be appreciated by the both horror movie fanatics and those who typically stay away from scary movies. In the film Halloween, John Carpenter creates "The Bogeyman," Michael Myers, whose murder tactics reflect considerations of both gender and morality, as his victims are predominantly teenagers engaging in risky
While I believe that Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” is a very enjoyable article, I do not agree that horror movies help us keep sane. In fact I think that prolonged looking at violence probably makes us more vulnerable and prone to violence. Or possibly just ignore the violence of others. In this essay, Stephen King explains his opinions on why he thinks that we crave horror movies.
The door was locked. Does Jack have the ability to “shine”? Could be as he is able to talk to Grady and be released by Grady from a locked storage room. Or could it be Danny have so much power the hotel “comes to
Another example of an original movie that still terrify us today is the Halloween series. In 1978, the first film of many was released. This slasher series focuses on a notorious character, Michael Myers. As many of you already know, Michael Myers is a terrifyingly huge male with a knife which highlights the aspect of his gory kills. In one of the movies, The Shape, the young Myers kills his older sister and later returns home to kill more teenagers.
She uses the words ‘died’, ‘terror’, ‘fear’, ‘dark’, ‘risk’, ‘strain’, and ‘hellish’; which are all words associated with danger or negativity. In contrast, Irene enjoys being a mother and always thinks about her children when making decisions. She feels motherhood is a strong life-long responsibility that can definitely be stressful, but is worth it in the long run. She feels such an obligation to her children that she puts their needs before hers. “Nor did she admit that all other plans, all other ways, she regarded as menaces, more or less
Jack’s Character Development in The Shining Imagine a small family going out to stay in an empty hotel, all alone in the deep Rocky Mountains. The Torrance family began to caretake a hotel in the middle of winter in a hotel far in the Rockies. Jack, who was the recovering alcoholic father, thought it was the perfect way to get his life back in order; he jumped at the opportunity to have some free time because he was a writer and he wanted some time to be able to continue his writing. By him taking the job at the hotel also came with some worries; there had previously been a family brutally murdered by the father, but Jack had no worries, he just thought it gave the place a more interesting look.
The Crucible Almost everyone in the play The Crucible has something to do with the hangings of John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey and the other five people that were hung as well, but there were a select few that had a huge impact on the death of the protagonist john proctor 's death. These select few are the girls that were dancing in the woods which include Abigail Williams, Tituba, Betty Parris, Mercy Lewis, Susanna Walcott, Mary Warren, and Ruth Putnam. The others include Deputy Governor Danforth, Thomas Putnam, and John Proctor himself. The girls that were dancing in the woods are the ones that started everything. This is because they were casting charms to make the men they like fall in love with them.
Yet, in the beginning of the novel, he quit drinking and seems to take control over his life. He seems to have the will to better himself and take care of his family. He sees his job on the Overlook, as a way of reconciliating with his family and to pursue his dream job, writing a play. Although it started of as a good idea, the Overlook eventually takes over Jack. On a more realistic kind of horror, Jack is a human that is struggling with himself.
Summary of “Why We Crave Horror Movies” In Stephen King's essay,“Why We Crave Horror movies,” King describes the reasons why people desire to watch horror movies. King elaborates on the fact that we are all mentally ill in our own way; going to horror movies just provokes those terrors. The young are more inclined to admire the excitement and thrill; however, as people grow older they lose interest. Horror movies, King describes, are for making oneself feel normal by comparison to the mentally insane.
This already shows the audience that she is more capable of being strong and independent without her husband dominating her. What gives the concept that the hotel they are staying at is isolated is the high string intense music that plays throughout selected scenes in the film like when Wendy is trying to run away from Jack while he tries to find and kill her, there is nobody around and she is alone to defend herself, there is high intense string music playing. In the scene where Jack’s unpredictability shows is when he yells at her, seeming to blame her for something that is entirely black and white, his fault. He says “do you have the SLIGHTEST IDEA, what a MORAL AND ETHICAL PRINCIPLE IS, DO YOU? Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities?
The author's purpose for writing this article is to express that blood and gore films engage the bad in us, and that is the reason we feel the need to watch them.
