Segregation and discrimination between African Americans and Americans were distinct during the Harlem Renaissance. During this time in history, African Americans were taking a stand for their rights and to obliterate segregation. African Americans slowly became more literate and began to have equal rights as those of Americans. Since discrimination was still present during the middle of the 1900’s, many individuals who were treated unfairly started to stand up for their rights. Two well-known poets, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, have decided to take a stand to put an end to the gap between both races.
During the 1900s, there were many famous authors who wrote about African Americans and Civil Rights. This was what was going on during this time period. Segregation and discrimination towards blacks was increasing. Two famous authors were Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Langston Hughes wrote the poem “I, Too, Sing America.” Maya Angelou wrote the poem “Still, I rise.” These two poems both have their own meaning but are still similar in many ways.
Nella Larsen, one of the major woman voices of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, when many African American writers were attempting to establish African–American identity during the post-World War I period. Figures as diverse as W.E.B. Du Bois, Alain Locke, A. Philip Randolph and Jessie Fauset, Zora Neale Hurston along with Nella Larsen sought to define a new African American identity that had appeared on the scene. These men and women of intellect asserted that African Americans belonged to a unique race of human beings whose ancestry imparted a distinctive and invaluable racial identify and culture. This paper aims at showcasing the exploration of African American ‘biracial’ / ‘mulatto’ women in White Anglo Saxon White Protestant America and their quest for an identity with reference to Nella Larsen’s Quicksand.
The Harlem Renaissance helped the African Americans gain equal rights as everybody else. Today, most of the famous musicians and artists are African Americans. This shows that the African Americans never gave up on their future and always tried hard to do their best. During the Harlem Renaissance the blacks and whites began associating and collaborating in public for the first time. The African Americans were encouraged to explore and celebrate their heritage.
Jean Toomer’s “Georgia Dusk” reveals the remaining influence of slavery on a newly freed African American society. The title is especially relevant within Toomer’s poem, as it signifies a motif that exhibits lightness and darkness within the poem. “Georgia Dusk” signifies this fusion through the word “dusk”, or the time when day transforms into night. This has a possible relation to Toomer’s identity as a mixed-race person, in that he has several racial identities. Thus, the title could signify Toomer’s relations to both African American and white society.

The New Negro Renaissance, more formally known as the Harlem Renaissance, earning it’s name from the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke, had many effects on many people, but it can be best described as a revolution, a cultural uprising where the high level of Black poetry, production and art demanded, and, in turn, received the mainstream appreciation and accolade which it rightly deserved. It is described as the most important and so discussed period in African American literacy, and indeed twentieth century literacy as a whole. Black poets felt segregating in their writing, and forced into the inforced, repressive form of the western white poets of the time. With their writing founded upon tribal, native songs full of pride and passion, the migration to a set form imposed upon them left a stale taste, a further example of how black people were repressed, not allowed to
His peers viewed his works as an “unattractive” portrayal of black life (“Langston Hughes”). Nevertheless, Hughes continued to produce more poems and novels and went on to become one of the most famous authors of the Harlem Renaissance period. Although black people were placed at the bottom of the social totem pole, women of all races were still discriminated against and still faced hardship. So Zora Neale Hurston (black and a woman) had to work twice as hard to be acknowledged in the world of art. Hurston was dedicated to her craft.
This poem is very straightforward making the message more meaningful and affective. This poem teaches readers that all humans have strength within them that can help to overcome any obstacles. “Out of the huts of history 's shame…/ I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide…/ Into a daybreak that 's wondrously clear…/I rise…” (29-43) generate a glorious ending and reflection of being the hope and the dream of slaves as reflected in the freedom and opportunity of the present day. The message drives a point that no matter what, the protagonist will be triumphant. The importance of having appreciation of our previous generations for what they have done for us and what they have left is highlighted in line 39, “Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave”.
The Harlem Renaissance was a the time that took place between the end of World War I and the middle of the 1930s. During this time Harlem was a cultural center, drawing black writers, musicians and artist. This was the most influential movement for African Americans. Many people in the African American literary movement were either descends from slaves or were part of the great migration out of the South. The Harlem Renaissance gave black people the opportunity to become something important.
Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes were two African American poets who wrote during the Harlem Renaissance time period. The Harlem Renaissance spanned from 1917-1937 in Northeast America. Although slavery was in history, racial tension was still felt during that time, and that is what both poets wrote about. Countee Cullen wrote the poem “Incident”. Structurally the two poems are rather different.The poem Incident is a Quatrain since it has a syllable structure that is very comparable all through.
