The Animal, Vegetable Miracle Summary

“Soviet communism paid a heavy price for what it did to Orwell in Spain. Out of that came Animal Farm. An attack on the myth of the nobility of Soviet Communism” states Russell Baker, author of the preface to George Orwell’s Animal Farm (Orwell vi). In this statement, Baker is referring to Orwell’s experiences in while he fought in the Spanish Civil War. Even though Spain was far away from Russia, it didn’t escape Stalin’s influence. Because of Communist influence in Spain, many of Orwell’s friends were “shot, and others spent a long time in prison or simply disappeared” (vi). Revolutions are fundamentally unavoidable when democracy fails to exist. Revolutions occur when people feel unjust and mistreated. In Animal Farm, George Orwell writes of a revolution by farm animals against their human leader, Jones. The lack of a democracy and harsh inequality is the root cause of this revolution. In December of 2010 large uprisings and revolutions started around the Middle East and Northern Africa known as Arab Spring. In mid-March of 2011, the Syrian people protested the torture of students and fiercely demanded reforms, then, the government killed four protesters. This results in a full blown civil war, still ongoing to this very day. In both of these cases, revolutions are fighting against the politics of barbaric totalitarianism

My original core reading “How a Government Computer Glitch forced Thousands of Families to go Hungry” Gerry Smith’s article goes into detail about North Carolina’s system glitch and how it forced several, hungry families to go without food. Smith is currently working with The Huffington Post to report all means involving technology. Ellen Smirl, the woman who published “Social Justice Deficits in the Local Food Movement: Local Food and Low-Income Realities” has written about several different topics, from the food industry all the way to the insurance companies. Within this reading she discusses alternative food movement and how these choices affect the environment. Likewise, both readings reach out and try to inform others

There are many different theories and opinions on what really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. Some are backed up by facts and science and others are total hoaxes. My opinion based on the documents, is that the colonists ran out of supplies, tried to leave the area for Croatoan, and sunk at sea because they couldn't build sufficient boats.

With a big city comes big diversity. My hometown, the city of Chicago, not only is diverse because of the people, but it is also very diverse because of the food. If you were to visit the top floor of the Willis Tower, or as my fellow Chicagoans would refer to it as the Sears Tower, you would be able to see majority of Chicago, and its various components. My hometown of Chicago has actually tried to be more organic and be more involved in the food movement, as well. Even within my neighborhood, which is a primarily Hispanic neighborhood, has tried to be more organic. Although some may argue it’s hard to be organic in such a huge city because of all of the food deserts, Chicago is trying very hard to counteract this for the sake of the health of our city.

Sweetgrass Basket, was a book written by, Marlene Carvel. In this book she tells of a story about two little girls who are sisters that are sent to an off reservation school. Here the sisters encounter harsh treatment and horrible living conditions. Carvel tells about their journey and it is very sad to see how their lives change so drastically.

To be a grass farmer means that one raises animals for meat, eggs, wool, etc.; however, the farmer views these animals simply as a single part of the food chain and sees grass as the “keystone species” in the whole process. The farmer Joel, in The Omnivore’s Dilemma” said he would even venture to call himself a sun farmer because grass is simply the way we capture solar energy. Grass is the key component of his farming because grass is the only source of food for the animals. A grass farmer believes in the advantages of grass fed meat and practices the strategy. In this kind of food chain grass is the base; then animals are added; the animals eat the grass; the animals produce (wool, eggs, meat, milk, etc); their wastes (fecal and slaughter) create a compost; which is used on the soil to grow grass that will continuously provide food for the animals and indirectly for humans. In the book, Joel mentions that animals rotate in and out but grass is a constant, which further verifies the importance of grass in this kind of food chain.

The author’s purpose in this chapter was to inform and to persuade about organic food. He explains what is in these organic TV dinners, “I found one such TV dinner that included thirty-one ingredients were synthetic additives that are permitted under federal organic rules.” He is informing us because he is giving us facts how organic TV dinners were permitted by federal organic rules. He also explains why whole foods don’t have pesticides to keep the food healthy, ““But if you look a little closer you’ll see that something has been left been left behind. The organic food in stores like Whole Foods is organic because it is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.” In this quote he is persuading because he is giving out facts

There are many instances of symbolism in Animal Farm. One important symbol is Napoleon. He is a controlling, authoritative, and manipulative leader, like a dictator. Napoleon represents an absolute ruler. It is obvious to see Napoleon as a dictator when viewing the farm’s government as a tyranny. He is the main symbol of authoritarianism in the novel.

Did you know that Borlaug was very famous and very busy farming and helping people out? Borlaug has been around other countries helping people farmers grow efficient crops and travel. He has raised and spent his childhood over at his grandpa’s barn. He was the father of the “Green Revolution,” and farming. He had a family in his adulthood and tons of awards he has won for helping out the USA and the world. Although he is busy he had made good friends with farmers all over the world he had success.

Herbivores do not only take the form of animals, but humans as well. Veganism, “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” (The Vegan Society). When people think about a vegan lifestyle, the first question, assumption or judgment is based off their diet. The food choices of a vegan have risen, deep concern, and question regarding whether or not this lifestyle is healthy or not. Today the modern American is not vegan, but what is commonly known as a “meat-eater,” or more specifically an omnivore. "Orwellian" is an adjective that describes the condition of the society that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. The adjective suggests an attitude that is controlled by propaganda, the denial of truth, and manipulation of the past. In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell develops his ideas about the Russian Revolution through a highly satirical story written in the form of a fable. The characters represent actual people in history during the Russian Revolution, which took place in the years between 1917 to 1944, as it talks about a story of a farm rebelling against a human owner and establishes their own way of running the farm, which was effected by Old Major’s speech who talked about a society where all workers led the society, with no actual leader. However, imbalance of power occur as the pigs, who are the smartest of the animals gain influence by supervising other animals to work. In this process, Squealer plays a significant role in comforting the animals and keeping the farm in peace. Squealer does this by persuading the animals through his persuasive speeches. In this novel, George Orwell illustrates the huge influence a speech can have on the society’s mind and on individuals.

A dystopian Animal fable – Animal Farm, attacks the idea of totalitarian communism in a simpler format by painting a terrifying picture of a world in which personal freedom is non-existent. As is the case with most fables, Animal Farm is set in an unspecified time period and is largely free from historical references that would allow the reader to date the action precisely. It is fair to assume, however, that Orwell means the fable to be contemporaneous with the object of its satire, the Russian Revolution (1917–1945). It is important to remember that this period represented the recent past and present at the time of writing and that Orwell understands the significance of the story’s action to be immediate and ongoing rather than historical.
