Dealing With Grief Everyone has a different perspective on life. A cat has a different perspective than a mouse. A dog has a different perspective than a person. Garth Stein, in his story The Art of Racing in the Rain, illustrates the life of Denny and others through the eyes of Enzo, a dog. Enzo tells the audience the events that happen with him and his owner Denny. With Denny’s wife Eve dying, his daughter Zoey being taken away, and being accused of crime, Denny’s story teaches the message that grief changes people. Denny started realizing that the time spent with Eve was precious. That night when Enzo and Denny left the twins house (really Eve’s parents) unknowing to them that Eve would pass away that night. Enzo could feel it in his bones that she left. “She died that night. Her last breath took her soul, I saw it in my dream. I saw her soul leave her body as she exhaled.” ( Stein 162) Denny then received a call saying that Eve had passed. “ They closed the french door so that Denny could be alone with Eve for the last time, even though she was no longer living.” (Stein 167) As a result of such a tragedy of losing his wife, Denny tried to put on a brave face for his …show more content…
The Twins try to make Denny feel bad because he did not make preparations for Eve’s funeral. “ We discussed it with Eve, as well, just so you know. And we believe that the best situation for all of the parties involved would be for us to have custody of Zoe.” ( Stein 170) The twins had no right to steal Zoe from Denny. This was grief talking because they talked about how Eve wanted Zoe to stay with them but she told Denny that they would all live together again. The twins might have thought that Zoe was like a small younger Eve so they wanted to raise her like one because they felt responsible for the death of her and not wanting the same to happen to Zoe. This is why they tried to take her from Denny and also
The state of Missouri has plenty of musical artists to be proud of with jazz innovator Charlie Parker from Kansas City and legendary rocker Chuck Berry from St. Louis. The Rainmakers are an original rock band from Kansas City. They came out with a string of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the U.S. and Europe. This bar band still performs.
Throughout the last two weeks, I have been reading Patrick Ness’ Monsters of Men and Garth stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain. I had 478 pages left of Monsters of Men and I finished that book. I am currently on page 122 of The Art of Racing in the Rain. Monsters of Men was about the battle between Spackle and the people. There were two groups of people that were also against each other but they decided that they had to join forces because one group did not have food and the other group did not have water because the Spackle destroyed their supply of it.
Introduction Garth Stein, author of the renowned The Art of Racing in the Rain has a capacity to engage readers from the beginning to the end of each novel. One might ask how what his writing is so appealing; numerous people believe that great novels are because of the who the author is as a person. However, the author has to allow the characters to take on their own personalities; the characters are very much different from the author in truly iconic novels. Garth Stein certainly subscribes to this idea, as he is known for his stories that seem authentic and natural, driven by his original characters, rather than characters based off of himself.
Eve impacts Enzo’s life when she loses her life, it allows Enzo to feel real human emotions such as anger and sadness. Enzo proves this by saying “I am not a dog who runs away from things. I had never run away from Denny before that moment, and I have never run away since. But in that moment, I had to run”(Stein 164). Enzo never feels like running away, but at that moment, he runs away from Denny because he loses control over his “doglike” emotions and is overwhelmed by his and Denny’s sadness.
At the vet, Denny and Enzo’s unbreakable bond is shown. One happy moment in the book shows Zoe and Enzo playing in the sprinklers on a warm evening as Denny and Eve watch. Soon after that, Eve is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Everything in The Art of Racing in the Rain is bittersweet, and that’s one of the things I love most about
She’s supposed to guide Zoe through high school. Zoe needs help with school, dance, and boys-especially boys. On page 253 Zoe says, “You left out the part about me falling for a guy my sick friend likes,” when Mia tries comforting her. Zoe had no interest in Calvin, Zoe’s crush, in fact she despised him. Then Zoe went to a party, a party that Olivia should’ve been at.
In The Art of Racing in the Rain, as Enzo is dying, he realizes that a person does not have to be selfish to be a great driver, or even a great person. As Enzo is about to die, he is ready to become human, but then realizes how much him dying is going to hurt Denny. He thinks: "I don't want Denny to worry about me. I don't want to force him to take me on a one-way visit to the vet. He loves me so much.
She wrote almost every day in her journal this was her outlet and her way of coping with the stress of built up emotion. Eve’s parents weren't really involved with her life she was basically alone in the big world. When Eve did come home her mom was either throwing up in the toilet or passed out on the couch. Eve’s Father passed away two years ago and this hit Eve and her mother really hard. Eve's mother pushed her away and so Eve went.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein features the use of symbolism in the form of a zebra. Symbolism is the application of a concrete object to represent an abstract idea or feeling, in this case being a zebra (whether it be plush or within a pen) representing the worst in all of us in our worst of times. This is shown throughout the story, all the way from the hallucination that Enzo experiences from food deprivation, to Annika’s assault on Denny, to Denny’s reluctant agreement to Trish and Maxwell’s custody settlement. To begin, the zebra is introduced as a beloved stuffed animal of Denny’s daughter, Zoё, which was given to her by her paternal grandparents. Despite its seemingly strange inclusion at first glance, this striped playmate
The Art of Racing in the Rain Analysis “I know this much about racing in the rain. I know it is about balance. It is about anticipation and patience.” (Stein 314). The Art of Racing in the Rain answers many different questions about what it truly means to be a good human being and live a well-balanced life.
From her internal thoughts and observations, the reader is given knowledge of the exact extent to which Ellie’s own mortality affects her thoughts, actions, and enjoyment of her whole life. The impact of the knowledge is best demonstrated when the reader is told, “Yet
Someone had found the body already. She tried not to think about who- a friend, a sibling, a lover?- as she took her leave. She remembered it all and tried to feel nothing, only the cool indifference that kept all other emotions at bay. If she felt anything it would destroy her.
When Richard’s heard the news of her husband’s death, he assumed Mrs. Mallard would be devastated. While everyone knew Mrs. Mallard was “afflicted with heart trouble” (57), him and her sister, Josephine, wanted to give her the news with “great care” (57). Josephine broke the news to Mrs. Mallard in “broken sentences”
I trembled when I entered the wasteland. The thousands of souls that once walked this earth were probably oblivious to their death. They were all like Mildred. We all lead unhappy and meaningless lives, but Clarisse opened my eyes to the world. Oh poor Mildred.
In a final example, when her “late” husband finally walks in through the door, she drops dead. It isn’t out of excitement or out of love, it’s because her only chance at freedom and alone time is taken from her just as soon as she received it. “Someone one was opening the front door with a latch key. It was Brently Mallard Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and
