The Articles of Confederation period of American history, from 1781 to 1789, was one of the most critical time periods when it comes to developing our nation’s government as a whole. After the colonist rebelled against the tyrannical Monarchy in Great Britain they needed to create a new form of government. This form of government they ended up creating was called the Articles of Confederation (AoC). The AoC was a document that established the functions of the brand new national government.
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. Although it was drafted by congress in 1777, it was not ratified by all thirteen states until 1781. Out of fear of creating a tyrannical government, the Articles of confederation actually allowed the states to be very much free and independent. Although that policy ensured a non-monarchist government, the liberation that was granted has its pros as well as its cons. From 1781 to 1789 the Articles of Confederation provided the United States with an effective government by giving the states freedom, however shortly crumbled due to the lack of stability.

They are both very important documents that have similarities and differences. Some of the main things the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution have in common is that they addressed the needs of its constituencies.
The differences between the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution are massive with there being little in common between the two besides the fact that there were both forms of government for the former British colonies. However, that is where the similarities end. The differences start with the branches of government. There was no true executive branch and even if there was there no way for the government to enforce the law.
Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.
The Articles of Confederation couldn’t deal adequately with many problems that arose during the 1780’s. Some of the problems include National Security and Currency. On the other hand, The Articles of Confederation did have some admirable traits to it. Such as the Ordinances of 1787 and 1785. Though the Articles had some praiseworthy achievements, it did come with some major complications.
The Article of Confederation was the first American Constitution. The central government was not strong and getting the system organize made it stronger. In 1777, the Continental Congress allowed each state to have their own independence. The Department of State had three employees and they were men.

The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.
