The Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp

Did you know that eleven million people died in the holocaust? Six million of those people were Jews. The Jews were captured and taken to concentration camps because the Nazis simply hated them. Concentration camps were made to kill off all of the Jews. They did this because they saw them as a problem to Germany. I am researching about concentration camps. The two things that I am writing about is why concentration camps were established, and what the Nazis did to the inmates in concentration camps.

The concentration camps were Hitler’s as well as the Nazi’s answer to the “Final Solution” of the eradication, elimination, and extermination of the Jewish population in Germany. A little after Germany’s annexation of Austria in March, 1938, tons of Nazis had arrested German and Austrian Jews. There were many invasions that had led the Germans to force labor, which they had gotten the name “Prisoner of War Camps”. As soon as you knew it camps were being spread worldwide and they had finally been given the name concentration camps. Inside each one many gas chambers were being constructed to increase the killing efficiency to the max.

Auschwitz had three main camps, Auschwitz 1, Birkenau, and Monowitz. Auschwitz 1 held a lot of prisoners, as well as the SS base and bases for all the police and military. It had some of the small labor companies. Birkenau was the largest camp and main extermination camp, here Jews could be gassed, shot, starved, attacked by dogs, or committed suicide. One interesting thing about Auschwitz is the physical location. Another interesting thing about Auschwitz is the train ride to get them. To conclude, concentration camps did horrible thing to people just because Hitler did see them as "desirable", Hitler thought that we should live in a world without Jews. The first concentration camp in the Nazi system, Dachau, opened in March, 1933. Prisoners were subjected to unbelievable terrors from the moment they arrived in the camps it was a terrible existence that involved a struggle for survival against a system designed to destroy them.

The death camps were places where the detainees would be taken into chambers where toxic gas would be released and the prisoners would just drop dead. The “Final Solution” was one of the key elements that the Nazi Society believed in. Though at the beginning of the Nazi occupation of Europe work camps were the places where the prisoners were forced to work long grueling hours, later in the occupation they started to use death camps to help them in the “Final Solution”. According to the U.S Holocaust Memorial Museum, “Millions of people were imprisoned and abused in the various types of Nazi camps. Under SS management, the Germans and their collaborators murdered more than three million Jews in the killing centers alone. Only a small fraction of those imprisoned in Nazi camps survived. (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 1)”. The prisoners were tortured in ways beyond imagination. A special few prisoners would be selected by Nazi doctors, who would then perform dangerous medical experiments on them. The Nazi’s would also beat the Jews and do many treacherous things to them. Bergen-Belsen was one of the worst concentration camps there were during Hitler’s terrible reign over Germany and Europe. He produced these concentration camps, and they were designed to make Jews suffer. There were many concentration camps during this reign, but Bergen-Belsen was one of the worst.

In 1945 jews and many others types of people were taken from their homes, apartments, and other places and were taken to concentration camps. concentration camps where they kept them to kill, torture, and just to make them feel horrible and even worse. Auschwitz was one of the most well known camp it was more of a death camp in was first opened in April of 1940. It was more that 3.5 miles long so it was pretty big.

Treblinka was one of the worst concentration camps of all 6. Treblinka was started in 1942 ended in 1943 . They killed over 900,000 people in a year. They only had 67 survivors and Samuel Willenberg was the last survivor. Their was ten Thousand people murdered every day.

The Holocaust was the most catastrophic event of the time period. According to website history.com staff in their article “The Holocaust”, 11 million people overall were killed in the Holocaust. The victims of the holocaust included Jewish people, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish civilians, disabled people, gypsies, political opponents of Hitler, and homosexuals. These people lost all their belongings, homes, cars, and their freedom. One specific experience the victims of the Holocaust went through were the Concentration camps that the Germans forcefully took them too. Their daily lives in the camps were remarkably cruel and harsh.

The Holocaust was one of the worst examples of genocide that has occurred in the world and throughout history. Millions of people died during the Holocaust, including Jews and gypsies as well as homosexuals and those with mental illnesses. When people think of or remember the Holocaust, they typically relate it to concentration camps. The camps were used to house and execute prisoners and also perform hard manual labor. Every aspect of daily life in the camps was horrific as the conditions were brutal, both mentally and physically. As a result of the conditions and the Final Solution, many millions of “undesirables” were killed during the Holocaust. The three types of camps were referred to as labor camps, death camps, and concentration camps.

The second extermination camp to come into action through the Nazi "operation Reinhard " was the extermination camp Sobibor. The sobibor death camp was accepted in March 1942. The death camp was situated in the district of Poland, so the people from outside wouldn 't see what the SS officers or Nazis were doing to the Jews. There was this railroad to the Sobibor death camp that the Jews in the train passed through it. Some of the jews in the train didn 't know what was going to happen when they arrived to the camp, but some knew what was going to happen because they had heard news from people of what the nazis had and are going to do to the Jews. It must of have been the scariest day for the Jews who had arrived at the death camp.
