Brandon Sanderson’s science fiction novel, “Steelheart,” takes place in a post-apocalyptic universe packed with complex problems that many normal humans are not willing to solve. The cities are packed with creatures known as epics that are very similar to humans that have acquired special powers David, the protagonist in the story, is put in a very tough situation and hopes to overcome the what seems to be the greatest obstacle, defeating Steelheart the most powerful and evil epic of all. Throughout the book the author hints at David's past, and how he feels lonely and abandoned. He needs some people to call family, to love and to trust because Steelheart left him alone in a cruel unforgiving world. ”Steelheart jumped forward with blinding speed and slammed a hand against [David's] father’s chest, crushing him back against the white stone pillar. Bones shattered, and blood poured from my father's mouth” (Sanderson 13). This relates back to the theme because it builds on the fact that everything seems against him. Steelheart kills his father in a gruesome way, in front of him. Not only does the city fall into chaos, and Steelheart gains control, he makes everything worse and more complex for David. David is alone and without support and that is one of the first major problems David faces. To carry out his plan of ultimately taking down Steelheart, he would need trusted allies and strong enough weapons, which David had none of. Not only for what he did to David, but what he does to others would qualify David to become the major problem in the story. A problem that David cannot defeat …show more content…
Sanderson explains how David was not going to give up, even if it means death. David was “bloodied before [Steelheart]” yet stuck out his ambitious plan and watched his plan literally go up in flames as “the fire consumed Steelheart” (Sanderson 376). This shows that David would not go down without a fight, and he would fight until it was all over to see Steelheart bleed. For David to be able to overcome this major obstacle it was not going to be easy, and he proved he was not going to give up no matter how much blood he would have to shed. David also had to believe that it was possible to overcome a problem as large as Steelheart. Overall David had worked hard, reluctant to give up he overcame large obstacles and in the end, his unwillingness to give up made it possible for him to complete his final

However, David didn’t want to back down, so he decided to take a different course of action. Having done this lead to the mission eventually being completed. Towards the end of the novel, another instance occurs where David doesn’t give up, “I spotted Steelheart, who was turned away from me, distracted by Prof. I ran for all I was worth…”(370). Here the Reckoners tried to escape from the final battle against Steelheart, but David couldn't simply leave. Instead, David tried one tactic that he believed could stop Steelheart.
At this time David’s father is dead by the hands of Steel Heart, he was not trying to shoot Steel Heart but the bullet grazed his cheek and it started bleeding. That made Steel Heart really mad and he killed his father and everyone in the bank that day. Expect David and he wants payback. Dealing with Adversity Throughout one’s life, adversity is inevitable. It presents itself unexpectedly in many forms; loneliness, despair, loss of a loved one, stress, and even in the actions of others. In the novel “Three Day Road” by Joseph Boyden, Elijah faces adversity after joining the war. However, the approaches Elijah takes to overcome the several hardships he faces makes him an undesirable model for coping with adversity. Elijah’s approaches are ineffective at coping with adversity because he follows misguided advice and becomes apathetic during war, resulting in major impacts on his life which lead to his downfall.
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants is the backbone of the book David and Goliath written by Malcolm Gladwell. The book is based off of an old tale that took place three thousand years ago. Known as David and Goliath whose story will live on forever. The story goes like this; in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy fought a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names David and Goliath have stood for battels between underdogs and giants. Gladwell idea for his book is about different situations that could come up in everyday life and how the underdog rose to the top or in some cases were the giant keeps control.
“To persevere, I think, is important for everybody. Don’t give up, don’t give in. There’s always an answer to everything”-Louie Zamperini. This man, Louie Zamperini was a bombardier for the US in World War II. He and his crew were shot down and forced to survive at sea for forty six days.
Howard Schultz once said, “In times of adversity and change, we discover who we are and what we are made of.” In life, one starts to realize everything is not always peachy. Sometimes one has to go through patches of thorns before things start to look up, but in the long run difficulties in life turn out to make one stronger person. In the books Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, and Night by Elie Wiesel, two of the main characters are pushed to their limits and beyond. How these men react to their situation is both mesmerizing, and courageous.
The book I chose to read this quarter is “Woods Runner” by Gary Paulsen. I will be analyzing the thoughts and actions of Samuel Smith, a 13 year old boy whose parents were taken by the British and Iroquois. Samuel Smith’s actions, reactions, and reasoning for his actions and thoughts throughout the story are fueled by fear of loss. Samuel is with either just himself, or Annie and Coop throughout most of the book. This is because his parents were taken by the British and the Iroquois indians.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, a character voices his opinion of the abnormality of society through a famous greek legend known as the 7 tasks of hercules of which one story depicts a seemingly invincible man but with not only his strength but mind helped him prevail. Hercules defeats his adversary by displacing his enemy from the earth and lifting off away from his nature which correlate tremendously with the dystopian society of Fahrenheit 451. In relation to the 7 tasks of hercules , one of Hercules tasks was his battle against Antaeus, Hercules had to defeat a man of incredible strength more so than even him, but when Antaeus was away from his natural habitat the earth he was weak, just as the people in fahrenheit displaced from their knowledge are weaker as they had no books or thought provoking emotional times, thus being displaced from their habitat of knowledge censored from real life as a whole.
Every day, many people worldwide are faced with moral dilemmas that frequently put an individual’s personal ethics under strain. It is not uncommon for one to make a decision that feels virtuous to them during the immense pressure placed upon them from outside forces, only to reflect back on the situation after it has occurred and will that they had reacted differently because it would change the outcome of such an event to something more desirable. Such a phenomenon is called survivor’s guilt, and it occurs more often than most people believe. Survivor guilt is invoked in a multitude of ways, ranging from warfare to natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. Therefore, narrator of the short story “The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami
The two protagonists that have many comparisons, is the main characters from Kidnapped and Treasure Island. The main character from Kidnapped is David Bulfor, and the main character from Treasure Island is Jim Hawkins. In Robert Stevenson’s novel, Kidnapped, the genre is Adventure Fiction. In Kidnapped David gets a letter from his father, his father told him to go to the House of Shaws. When David arrives he sees his Uncle Ebenezer.
This quote expresses David’s ongoing internal battle between knowing who he is as a person and worrying about how others identify him. In reality, the only person’s opinion that David should be cautious about is Sharon 's, which ironically is the only opinion that he destroyed in the process. Another ironic part in the story is how Sharon never forgives David for the lie he told that day, yet later on in their marriage, she is the one lying the most and keeping the biggest secret of all, the
A crisis has materialized. After many tensions, the United States is under nuclear attack, and he who has outstanding traits will have the greatest chance of survival. This is “survival of the fittest”, presented by scientist Charles Darwin. In the novel Alas, Babylon, one man and his “family” pushed through the dark times with several characteristics. The qualities of loyalty, resourcefulness, and wisdom and knowledge provided a greater chance of finding light in an otherwise dark time.
