“The ballad of Pemi Tshewang Tashi- a wind borne feather”, the English translated by Karma Ura is one of most popular lo-zey of Bhutan. This ballad itself can be considered as one of the national identity of Bhutan. Though the entire ballad is revolving around Chamberlain Pemi Tshewang Tashi, it gives the overall view or situation of Bhutan at that period. This essay will argue whether the national identity of Bhutan had changed over time or not from that period as mention in the Ballad. In the ballad, there is clear picture of political situation and government system of Bhutan of that period which is quite different from the present government system. The economical changes had brought huge changes in infrastructure development of nation but values passed from generation to generation remained same. For an instance, in “The Ballad of Pemi Tshewang Tashi” there are number of tradition and cultural values that we follow even now and that makes our identity as Bhutanese. The national dress for male is gho which is portrayed in the ballad as well in the line “The matha gho that comes out of Samdrup”. There are other things such as “bangchung”, “betaam”, “jalings”, “kabney” and “sumchang” which is still treasure equally like in olden days though there is no uses of “betaam” which is replaced by money. In the Ballad, there are number of languages used which is regional dialects of Bhutan such as “ Dzong”, “chorten”, “Zongpon”, “Dasho” , “sarideo” and “jaachen” and shows its unique identity of the nation. Bhutanese follow Buddhism as religious and there are number of religious believes in Bhutan that is still considered sacred. Even in this Ballad, when Chamberlain Pemi Tshewang Tashi witness number of omen, he considers all religious point of view.
