Homework is praised as beneficial, but what if it is causing more harm than good? Homework is not truly beneficial because it has no proven academic benefits and causes unnecessary health issues. Homework has no proven academic benefit. First, the longer researchers track students academically, the less homework seems to be helpful. In Alfie Kohn´s article “The Value of Homework Needs Further Research,” researchers reviewed a study comparing 17 published reports of research projects that have lasted anywhere from two weeks to thirty weeks and concluded “The longer the duration of the study, the less impact homework had.” Even though this is a confined study, the results and conclusions still show signs that homework does not help students prosper and therefore has no academic benefit.
In “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Readers” by Kavitha Rao, she express her opinion on the topic that the current generation is not reading for fun. She mentions several experience she had with other people, that don 't see the benefit in reading for fun. She says that since people aren 't reading more leisure anymore they 're becoming less creative, inarticulate, have poor communication skills and low confidence, which is caused by parents forcing their kids to read, and the education system need to have students memorize textbooks and nothing else. After reading this article I find myself disagreeing with Rao on several points she made, I don’t believe the modern attitude towards reading is causing people to be self absorbed and unimaginative, she also claims that book clubs don 't encourage reading for fun, parents are forcing their children to read boring books which turned them away from reading and that the educational system is to blame for college students for being inarticulate. In the very first paragraph Rao mentions a the conversations she had with two different people, the first person say “I never read fiction” and “After what 's the point of a book if it doesn 't teach you anything.” Another person says “Fiction is not real, no?” and adds “I only like to read real stories to improve myself.” She states that many young people don 't see the benefit in read unless its to help improve themselves, or to ace a job interview.
With this privilege, every state is able to lower the standards of the tests, making them easier for students to complete successfully and portray results of improvement. This is an obvious flaw because any statistics taken from the results of these tests can be unreliable and not representative of the students’ actual academic abilities. It was found that, in some states, No Child Left Behind testing led to a higher number of students with disabilities dropping out of school due to the inability to perform at what the school considered “normal” academically. Another flaw in the program would be “teaching to the test”. Since AYP is solely based on the results of standardized testing, it encourages teachers to only teach a handful of basic skills rather than creating a detailed and in-depth understanding of the curriculum.
When students receive busy work they often turn to their classmates for answers or go through the assignment hastily and without effort.
