Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. In today’s educational system, physical activity is becoming less and less prevalent. Schools are cutting down on times spent in physical education classes as well as times at recess. However, this is a huge mistake. Many educators are unaware of the many benefits physical activity brings to students academically. Luckily teachers are able to incorporate physical activity in their classrooms by doing activities such as GoNoodle, classroom warm-ups and fitness breaks, SMART Board fitness games, and taking content and making movement in the classroom. Physical activity in classroom as been shown to create physical, mental, and academic benefits for all students. Physical activity in the classroom has the opportunity to provide students with a healthier lifestyle, physically. According to Edward R. Laskowski (2016), children older than the age of 6 need at least an hour a day of physical activity. Most of the hour should be either moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. In addition, children should participate in muscle-strengthening and bone strengthening activities at least three days a week. However, most school districts are not helping to aid this need. In fact, with budget cuts, students are being given less opportunities to engage in physical activity. Integrating physical activity into classrooms has the ability to teach students different ways to exercise
The persuasive techniques Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are used to assist the author in their claim and sound convincing. In the articles “Position on Dodgeball in Physical Education,” by The National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and “The Weak Shall Inherit the Gym,” by Rick Reilly, both authors use persuasive techniques to make their claims on dodgeball in physical education. The article, “Position on Dodgeball in Physical Education,” created by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, short for NASPE, focuses on using logos throughout the article. To illustrate, when discussing keeping children and adolescents active it’s stated that, “61.5% of children aged 9-13 years do not participate in any organized physical activity during their non-school hours and 22.6% do not engage in any free-time physical activity”(986).
The education system in America has put limited funding in their physical education program leading to a decrease in enrolment numbers as well as providing inadequate standards of nutrition and health. Comparatively Sweden has made physical education a compulsory subject placing an active focus on developing healthier attitudes in students, this promotes healthy living post-graduation and lowers prevalence to type 2
Opening statement Most people will think that oh middle schoolers get enough physical activity but that is not the case. Middle schoolers need recess. Middle schoolers need to get all the physical activity they need to let loose their energy. The first reason is that middle schoolers from most studies done by cnn say “that middle schoolers need an average 50-60 minutes of physical activity everyday.”
Physical education, exercise science, and sports professionals all play a significant role in getting students, clients, and players to meet the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 and The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. Having a healthy lifestyle starts at an early phase in life. According to the text, “Adolescence is an important age for developing health habits that will persist into adulthood (79).” With that said, in order for them to have that healthy lifestyle they must become educated about the risks of inactivity as early as possible. Physical education is an “ongoing process of learning” that is incorporated in schools so that students learn to use that knowledge throughout their lives and also learn to enjoy doing it.
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football (President Barrack Obama)”. American Football is a full contact sport played by two teams of eleven players move the ball forward by running and passing . What makes it so dangerous is the amount of hits players receive during the match and during training. Letting their kids play football is a rising concern for many parents due to the amount of injuries and even deaths that happen on the field. Chris Borland, a professional player, retired from football aged just 24 due to concerns about his head injuries.
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
Physical education classes do not provide as much of a benefit as recess. In 2001, the Council on Physical Education for Children expressed the idea of replacing recess with physical education. Although physical education gives an outlet to let out anger, like any other academic classes, it imposes serious demand on children. Therefore, a physical education class is not much of a
A person should have an average of 60 minutes of physical activity a day in order to lead a healthy and fit life. We should all strive to work towards getting off the couch and reducing screen-time to lead less sedentary lives. This, in fact, encourages weight loss. The Ministries of Education in both Canada and U.S.A should revise the health curriculum to emphasise more on healthy eating and healthy body image to empower youth about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. To reverse the obesity epidemic, community efforts should focus on supporting healthy eating and active living in a variety of settings.
Throughout the semester, I have gained a better understanding of adapted physical education and sport programs. These programs provide children and adults with an opportunity to participate in sports they may not have thought were possible. The modifications to sport and exercise allows individuals with a range of disabilities to engage in activity. The disabilities can range from a mild learning disability to a permanent condition caused from a serious accident. While observing numerous individuals with disabilities, I was able to obtain a better understanding of the challenges that came with physical activity.
First, I will describe the relationship between exercise and academic performance. Many studies have been conducted to explore this relation, one being a University of Illinois study in which students age 9 to 10 were tested on their endurance by running on a treadmill. After
2.1 Assessment What does physical activity mean to you? To me physical activity is doing anything that involves moving the body eg. walking, jumping ,playing sports. I feel that it is very important to be physically active as it helps with your health and stress levels, looks and many more benefits.
Even though some students are against P.E, physical education classes show to help students develop fine motor skills, cooperation, teamwork, and reduces stress and improves self confidence and self esteem. Regular physical activity can also help prevent future medical issues. Without regular exercise, it may be more difficult to practice self-discipline and develop healthy exercise habits as adults. P.E should be mandatory, because it helps develop better skills such as motor skills and cooperation, helps prevent possible help issues in the future, and helps students become more self disciplined and have healthier exercising habits
So now, it should be more required than ever to make sure kids aren’t overweight and they are fit. Although physical education takes time away from other subjects in the classroom, physical education should be required in schools because our generation is becoming overweight and it helps students do better in class. To begin, physical
This was a period of the school timetable dedicated to engaging children in physical activity. This was a compulsory part of the school curriculum. It assured parents that their children were receiving some form of organised exercise and it also allowed for children to inspired and gain a passion towards sports and exercise for the future. A minimum of 75 minutes a week was devoted to physical education (this was mandatory) during which children’s physical strengths were pushed to the limit to allow them to improve muscle control and co-ordination as well as strength and endurance.
• Evidence- The National Association for Sport and Physical Education states that physical education classes help children develop fine and gross motor skills, learn cooperation and teamwork, reduce stress, improve self-confidence and self-esteem. • Argue- Physical Education takes away from learning and is not required for college. While this is true, how to exercise is just as essential, not just for college but for your life.
