In the film The Blind Side that was directed by John Lee Hancock, November 20, 2009, the theme is never to judge a book by it’s cover, you never know what someone is going through when you are judging them. The setting of the film takes place in Memphis, Tennessee, While Micheal Oher is still attending a Christian high school, and is basically living homeless on the streets, The Touhy family invites Micheal to stay the night however without knowing a single thing about him, and not judging him upon his races or size. The family knew that they would be judge for having a colored person in the family and would loose friends upon their decision. Three examples of never to judge a book by it’s cover is when the Touhy family takes a stranger in named Micheal Oher. When the Touhy family did not give up on his learning and athletic skills when everyone else in his life always had judged him from the …show more content…
When Micheal first attended the Christian School, when the teachers met Michael they started to judge him since he is African American and his size even before they had give him a quiz or test, even still when he took the assignment he didn’t do so well, one of Michaels teachers noticed that if the teacher gave the test verbally he gets a decent grade. And that maybe they should put in a lot more effort to help him in class instead of judging him upon his appearance. Therefore when he joined the football team Mike had no athletic and physical activity experience it was all new for him, also when the coach first seen him he was judging his size but knew he would be good on the team just needed a push since this was the first he played. The Touhy’s made sure they they put in effort to help him become the best from getting Micheal a Tutor and giving him help and tips on
In 2009, The Blind Side took hold of both the big screen and the hearts of American families. Since its debut, the movie has won 7 awards, as well as an Oscar. This inspirational movie fits into multiple categories: drama, comedy, sports, but most importantly biography. Since the movie fits into a variety of categories, it is truly a movie for everyone to enjoy. Throughout the movie there are powerful life lessons, but director John Lee Hancock did not need much help creating a plot since the movie is based off of a true story.
First it seems to me that Mark starts to understand how he could get each of hit students to write, but the staff at juvenile hall doubted mark thinking he made the inmates feel special and wont be able to get them to write. I believe mark gained confidence from being doubted and underestimated from the staff. Mark knows what was better for the students
Once he met the Touhy family his life changed drastically, with a stable home environment and many more opportunities for success on the football field and in the classroom. Michael also changed the lives of the Touhy family due
Michael connects his success to his training, rather than the stereotype that any African American male has exceptional athletic talent as he has displayed that his African American genetics is not associated with his athletic
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee characterizes Atticus as a person who see’s the prejudice people in his town. As he said in a trial involving a black man, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view”, said Atticus (lee 30). In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird the people of Maycomb County are very prejudice. This is a lesson that Atticus tries to teach his children. This quote from the novel is saying that a person has to try and see a situation from the other person's point of view, before the make a judgement.
In society today there are those that are pushed out of the crowd because of what they look like, how they act, and what others say to be true about them. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows that unselfish, kind hearted people can experience prejudice from others. Always wanting to be the better person, Atticus Finch is like the mockingbird when taking the responsibility of defending Tom Robinson, who is a black man. Once Atticus gets the news that he will be defending Tom Robinson, who is accused of rape, he is very stressed until the end of the trial. Harper Lee shows this when she says, “It’s this Tom Robinson case that’s worrying him to death...”
Appearance and stereotypes can make us judge someone, because of something such as skin color. These perspectives can keep people from seeing the consequences and results of their actions. By learning how to open our minds, we can broaden our own perspectives. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses conflict and plot to illustrate that judging someone without knowing them can eliminate the opportunity to understand their point of view. Lee shows this through Boo Radley and the theories that people have about him.
On page 33 of Harper Lee's book "To Kill a Mockingbird," the character Atticus states, "Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it¨. According to this quotation, the basis of compassion is an awareness of the other person's viewpoint and the reasons behind their actions. By summarizing a similar concept as the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover," Atticus made a point that is both true and insightful: you shouldn't evaluate a person by the way they seem because doing so defines who you are and is sometimes based on misinformation. This saying truly motivated me to remember that everyone has a backstory and to not judge a person by the way they look. Scout receives from Atticus the moral guidance that will guide her development
When Mike was in high school he was the star quarter back on the high school football team and now that he has finished with high school he no longer plays football. A quote that shows that Mike is dissatisfied with his life is when he said “Here I am, I gotta live in this stinkin ' town and I gotta read in the newspapers about some hot shot kid - new star of the college team. Every year its gonna be a new one. And every year it’s never gonna be me.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most commonly taught books in American schools. Beloved by many readers and educators as a story of moral courage, it has also been criticized for its limited portrayal of Black characters, dated treatment of racism, and promotion of a “white savior” narrative”(Facing History). One of Atticus Finch’s most famous quotes allows a deeper perspective into the harmful information throughout the book: “There’s a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep ‘em all away from you. That’s never possible”(Lee 115).
The Blind Side can be summed up in three words: determination, hope, and courage. In the nonfiction book The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, the protagonist undergoes these feelings, and as readers, we see him rise from the bottom to the top. Michael Oher is a poor black teenager, who does not know his father or his birthday. His mother is addicted to crack cocaine, and he cannot read or write. Michael’s whole life changes after a rich, white, and strongly religious family plucks him from the streets.
One important message that came from this book was don’t judge someone just because of their skin color. In the beginning of the book, there was evidence where someone was judged because of their skin color. In chapter 3, Justyce and some of his peers were in a discussion on the debate team. The topic they were talking about was Declaration of Independence.
Destruction of Character Through Pre-Judgment Judgment, often defined as an opinion or a conclusion, is a relevant term throughout Harper Lee’s writings (Merriam Webster). As seen in To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman the relevance of judgment is evident through discrimination of individuals skin color. At first glance, an average reader might perceive the novel as a story of an unconventional upbringing. Although this reader is not completely mistaken, a key point is lost. This point is the theme of pre-judgment and its destructiveness.
Similarly, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is presumed guilty of a crime that he did not commit because he is black. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men features a character, Lennie Small, who is left out or made fun of because of his mental problems. In Their Eyes Were Watching God Janie has light skin and hair, heavily contrasting the darker pigmentation of her neighbors. Because of this, her neighbors believe that she is stuck up and that she thinks that she is better than they
In society, there are very few people who have the unwavering dedication to stand up for what they believe. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a black man was convicted and accused of a crime he didn 't commit, raping a white women, which is not in anyway tolerable in society. In Harper Lee 's To Kill A Mockingbird, the author used point of view and symbolism to acknowledge how the the several social divisions which make up much of the adult world are shown to be both irrational and extremely destructive. To begin with, the short story To Kill A Mockingbird, used point of view to show how the many social divisions in the world are irrational and destructive. Scout; a first grade student at the time, was telling the story from her point of view and what had occurred from her childhood perspective.
