Bonbons in The Awakening were given to Mrs. Pontellier in a flattering manner. Léonce Pontellier presently believes that he can buy the love of his wife and children with the delicacies and luxuries he supplies them with. In most instances, the bonbons are given to the children; most of which presumably are excited at the sight of seeing sweets and pastries. However, there are some cases in which the bonbons are for Mrs. Pontellier. The roles of society have shown throughout centuries that it is generally the man of the house that supplies his family with food and presents; as men are typically seen to be the workers and their wives are at home to care for the children.
