INTRODUCTION QUOTE OR FACT. The Breakfast Club was a film produced in 1985 by John Hughes in Shermer, Illinois, that involved 5 different stereotypical teenagers in detention who were assigned an essay to tell his or her story. When the day ends, they all queried if they were all somehow the same. The experiences they had throughout the film made them question the stereotypes given to them. The purpose of The Breakfast Club is to inform teenagers and adults of the negative effects that stereotyping and parental pressure has on young adults. Through the use of a younger cast and romantic relationships, the target audience was definitely reached and moved by this film. By effectively using the rhetorical appeals, the audience was able to relate to some of the ideas shown and look at their community through an entire new lenses. The Breakfast Club can be classified as a coming to age film. Hughes is known for producing and writing some of America’s best teen movies. Hughes produced Home Alone one and two and many other popular films. With the audience knowing who he is and the films he have produced, they trust that his work is credible. People will always remember who John Hughes is this will always have an ethos effect on the viewer’s sense of credibility. The Breakfast Club also appeals to ethos through personal experience. The people who were watching this film in 1985, experienced what was going on in the movie. They had all sorts of parenting, social, and economic problems, so they knew his work wasn’t just something to be shown off. It had a purpose and the argument in the film was credible.
