The Butler Reflection: After watching “The Butler”, I learned about the presidential administrations of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. We learned how each affected the Gaines family and the civil rights movement. 1957 - The Eisenhower Administration Cecil goes to his new job to serve Dwight D. Eisenhower. He meets the other staff, including head butler Carter Wilson and co-worker James Holloway. Cecil brings tea to Eisenhower, who is meeting with Chief of Staff Sherman Adams and Attorney General Herbert Brownell. Eisenhower doesn’t want to send troops down south because he thinks it could start another Civil War. Cecil’s son Louis says he wants to go south but Cecil refuses to allow it. At the White House, Cecil speaks to Eisenhower, who is painting a portrait. He asks Cecil if he completed school, but Cecil replies that he grew up on a cotton farm. After a moment, someone comes in to speak to Eisenhower about the segregation in schools. This pushes Eisenhower to later send troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to execute federal law. Cecil was right when telling Louis that the president would help them get an education. In the next few scenes, Cecil and Gloria …show more content…
Louis is at a Black Panther rally, but he has a change of heart when he realizes he may not be prepared to kill anybody. He asks Carol if she ever really loved him, but she doesn 't reply. He leaves, and not long after, it is reported that a group of Black Panthers were killed. Louis is arrested (again), but is bailed out by Carter and Charlie. Charlie announces he is going off to Vietnam to fight in the war. Louis thinks it’s a bad idea and says he won 't attend his funeral. Charlie doesn 't seem to care. In 1974, amidst the Watergate scandal, Nixon speaks to Cecil, mentioning the talk of him possibly resigning, but Nixon refuses to give up
One of the many landmark cases heard by the United States Supreme Court in American history was Lemon vs Kurtzman. In 1971 the Supreme Court had to decide if states could give money to certain religious based schools to hire staff even if the teachers couldn’t teach religious classes. The first amendment to the Constitution established the law of separation of church and state. What is the established boundary between church and state? This case would be the defining point in that fight between the involvement of a state and the churches.
In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls, the author, was most influenced by her time in Phoenix, as indicated by how she describes the living situation in her grandma's old house with the money, and the time they had to tie her dad down because he was going delusional. It is evident throughout the story that living in Phoenix had a great impact on Jeannette Walls, She had spent more time there than any other place and she even came back after leaving. The first time was just to visit Grandma Smith, but the second time they came back to stay for awhile in Grandma Smith’s old house. The family’s time in Phoenix is described mainly about the house there and what happened in or around that house.
The Butler started with the scene of Negro lynching with Martin Luther King’s quotation: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quotation alluded Cecil’s attitude of mind toward harsh reality. In 1926, African Americans received subhuman treatment. Adult Cecil had an opportunity to work in the hotel as a butler.
The reading from Kiese Laymon poses more questions to me than I had thought I would have going into the reading. I do remember reading this in 10th grade with Ms. Hodge and her asking us repeatedly, to examine the diction and phrasing of the piece. For example, on the first page, paragraph 3, there is a part that reads; “That Filet-o-fish straight cradling my lips..” and Ms. Hodge was persistent in asking us to “discover” the reason that Laymon used those words in that sentence. Now, I still have no idea why she was so persistent on asking us what it meant.
He tells everyone “don't lose hope” and “we shall all see the day of liberation”. He also tells everyone that they all need to help each other in order to survive. Finally, when they go to sleep he says goodnight on page 103.
He is sexist and fancy of himself as a man's man. We get the sense that his “girl in every port” lifestyle is driven by a “you only live once” attitude. But things change in a crisis. Problem with an aircraft engine, force Charlie to make a crash landing only yards from the shore of a lake. Luckily both of them unharmed during the crash.
The feeling of wariness for those in politics was not always existent; although only three presidents have faced impeachment charger, only one president has left office. Richard Nixon was the thirty seventh president of the United States, a man in the public eye for many years as both a U.S. representative and Senator (“Richard”), well educated and around sixty when he resigned from the position as president. On the evening of August 8, 1974, Nixon delivered his resignation speech over a public broadcast from his Oval Office to the people of the United States. The former president gave this speech to inform the nation of the upcoming changing president; he also voiced his hopes for the country in future affairs, especially the foreign policies
It’s a weird way to end a conflict but in the end it seemed like the only way to let him do what he wanted. Charlie is a persistent, adventurous dreamer; he will risk his life to do what he dreams of. He is persistent because he won’t let the school stop him from looking out the window. When he was looking out the window and his teacher called on him he “was [staring]
Charlie repeats this to himself because he thinks hiding Laura’s body was wrong and wishes to fix his mistakes. This shows that each decision Charlie makes is to hide Laura’s body, and Charlie is filled with guilt. “Laura Wishart is dead and I touched her warm body and she’s cursed me with dread and sorrow.” (Silvey, P.83) Dialogue is also another crucial technique used by Silvey to explore Charlie’s ethics and
But later, Charlie got more courageous and stood up to his mom. One night Charlie caught his mom having an affair and she told him that he was going to be in trouble for being out this late. But he stood his ground and told her that she was in the wrong not him. It takes courage to stand your ground, especially to your mom. But that isn't the only time Charlie stood up for himself.
The television show “Full House” takes place in San Francisco, California and was set in the late 1980s and into the mid 1990s. There are many main characters seen throughout this show, however for this paper the main focus is on Stephanie Tanner. Stephanie Tanner is the middle child of the three Tanner sisters. The following reflection piece is based on an event which I experienced during my internship placement. Johns model of reflection will be used for this assignment. The reflection is based around my own personal experience with a terminally ill patient. It focuses on one main issue, providing hope for patients and how I felt about it. it also discusses my feelings, the knowledge I had, my knowledge gaps and what I learnt through literature during my reflection.
I watched that ‘70s show for this assignment. All of the main characters in this show sar of in the ninth grade. So they are all in the adolescent phase of development. You can see many different physical and cognitive developments that they are going through. It is and excellent example of what these changes in high schools.
Whilst reading the King of Children I felt a resemblance to many western stories that we have had in the past decade. Although Western movies and stories are what I am usually used to I found that the King of Children added a new complex understanding of what it is like to become a teacher without any real proper training during the culture revolution. The story which is the third in a series. The reader follows the life of beanpole who is scouted by the officials to teach at a school up in the mountains. When he arrives, he realizes that the kids he is teaching is not up to the level that he originally thought they were, which in turn brings beanpole to not only teach them but to reach into their souls and really make them better people and students.
