The Butter Battle Book Analysis
Doctor Suess’s work in The Butter Battle Book explores the stupidity of war. In the book, the fight starts with two different cultures having biases against one another. Those cultures were the Yooks and the Zooks. During the war, both sides of the battle were trying to one-up each other on who had a better weapon. Throughout the story, Suess clearly is showing the stupidity of war through satire, illustration, and external conflict.
Suess’s way of inserting satire into The Butter Battle Book to assert his thoughts about war is very powerful. On page 7, Suess writes, “‘It's high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every

It is showing us that the Yooks are waging war on the Zooks just because they eat bread, butter side down. In another passage from the book, Suess writes,“‘But we Yooks, as you know, when we breakfast or sup, spread our bread,’ Grandpa said, ‘with the butter side up. That's the right, honest way!’ Grandpa gritted his teeth. ‘So you can't trust a Zook who spreads bread underneath! Every Zook must be watched! He has kinks in his soul! That's why, as a youth, I made watching my goal, watching Zooks for the Zook-Watching Border Patrol!...’”(8) The satirical device shown here is parody and stereotyping. Suess is not only mocking what happens in a real war but he also has the Yooks making assumptions about the Zooks. Finally, Suess shows satirical devices when he writes, “‘My Boys in the Back Room have finally found how. Just wait till you see …show more content…
Suess writes, “‘It's high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every Zook house and in every Zook town every Zook eats his bread with the butter side down!’”(7) This piece of evidence is how the whole story came to have its conflict. It all started with the Yook’s not liking how the Zooks ate their bread. From page 10, Suess says, “If he dared to come close I could give him a twitch with my tough-tufted prickely Snick-Berry Switch. For a while that worked fine. All the Zooks stayed away and our country was safe. Then one terrible day a very rude Zook by the name of VanItch snuck up and slingshotted my Snick-Berry Switch!” The conflict shifts when VanItch destroys Grandfather Yook’s Snick-Berry Switch. It goes from the bias of how butter should be on bread to the start of a war. In a long quote from the book, Suess says, “‘I marched to the Wall with great vim and great vigor, right up to VanItch with my hand on the trigger. ‘I'll have no more nonsense,’ I said with a frown, ‘from Zooks who eat bread with the butter side down!’ VanItch looked quite sickly. He ran off quite quickly. I'm unhappy to say he came back the next day in a spiffy new suit with a big new machine, and he snarled as he said, looking frightfully mean, ‘You may fling those hard rocks with your Triple-Sling Jigger. But I, also, now have my hand on a trigger! My wonderful weapon,
Y o u ' r e killing your father... I have bread...for you too... for you too..." (101) During this scene of the book, everyone is fighting over bread. Now to them, that piece of bread was the only thing that was helping them survive. They had been in a cattle car for days on end with no food or water, in the freezing cold.
Arrogance is an illusion of superiority one perpetrate upon themselves, a facade for the ignorance and complacency deep within. It is only after so many losses, that some may ultimately see the light. The War of the Worlds by H.G Wells, is a result of Wells’ residence at the time, a normal looking and peaceful town in Surrey. He mocks the suburban complacency of Surrey, a trait that carries over to the general populace within his novel, which is but a part of Wells’ depiction of a dystopian future. A future that seems so foreign and grim, yet so familiar to modern society; an insight into the future where the absolute rule of humanity gives way to Martian intruders.
At this point, Longstreet is confident in his predicament. On page 247, Longstreet restates his opinion of the war. “ ‘God in Heaven,’ Longstreet said, and repeated it, ‘there's no strategy to this bloody war. What it is is old Napoleon and a hell of a lot of chivalry.’ "
This shows how destructive the war and its tools are. The war destroys Verdun so much the French give up trying to use it in the future. In the book the horses that are used for war are killed and have to suffer their wounds because the soldiers that were not harmed have to take care of the wounded soldiers first. This shows the savagery of the weapons when used on innocent animals such as these
Krosoczka tailored an emotional and comical approach into his peeck to hook listeners and to help them see the importance of his passion. Krosoczka guided the audience to see how his work made the lunch ladies feel he “validated what [they] did” (Krosoczka 1). The audience was sucked in by this comical-emotional combo and clung to every word. The audience sympathized for all the lunch ladies and viewed them in a different light than

Ambrose completely went in depth into the history of Eisenhower from beginning to the end. Most of his information was derived from letters that Eisenhower wrote over the years, which helped to give a better picture of who he was based on his own writings. This is a great and thorough work on the different aspects of his life from growing up in Kansas, to his going to West Point and finally to his time in the Army. There are many examples in his texts that Ambrose remarks on the ingenuity and decisiveness of Eisenhower. In Eisenhower: Soldier and President, Ambrose remarks of how there was a time in which Eisenhower “didn’t like the way that there was a particularly way an instructor wanted him to answer a mathematical problem because he had found a simpler way in which to solve it and the
In 1793, Europe went into the war against revolutionary France, whereas “the United States had been the world’s primary neutral shipper” (Heidler 1). However, it did not last for long. As Americans provided the trade of sugar and coffee from the France to Europe, it created two issues: the trade lowered the price of sugar and coffee from Britain’s colonies; and the trade provided Napoleon with supplies (Boyer 232). Such conduct interfered with the Anglo-American relationship and created inconveniences for Britain. Consequently, Britain issued orders in Council, which regarded any trade with France and the countries of her control as illegal (Boyer 232).
The Slopes of War Essay The novel, The Slopes of War by N. A Perez, exhibits numerous emotional and physical effects of the battle in Gettysburg between the Confederacy and Union armies. The writer utilizes different quotes providing information illustrating the various obstacles that both armies faced. Apart from demonstrating the troubles/difficulties that the armies faced, the author also provides excerpts from one of the Union soldier’s sister, Bekah. To begin with, the writer displays an internal conflict in the Union army by using imagery.
The Yooks who wear blue and butter their toast on the top side. So they began to have a war on who can make bigger and better weapons all because one side thinks the other side is wrong for how they butter their toast. This book is based during the cold war between America and Russia. The Zooks are always a step ahead of the Yooks and end up backing down and trying to make a better machine or weapon. Towards the end of the story, both sides make the town people go underground for the made a bomb like a weapon called “the bitsy big boy boomeroo” (Seuss, The Butter Battle Book).the story ends with them on top of a wall wondering who will end it
On both sides of the battlefield are soldiers who are presented with constant propaganda and education that they are superior to every other country, and that they are fighting with great reason. Soldiers have no political influence, and no choice in war. They are forced to convince themselves that the enemy are evil, when in reality it is quite the opposite. Remarque explains that the Russian prisoners that Paul encounters are not much different from the German soldiers, “It is strange to see these enemies of ours so close up. They have faces that make one think...
In the book Butter battle, by Dr. Seuss, there is a lot of satire that can really be understood to new readers. “The boys in my back room invented this rig”. Dr. Seuss was talking about the cold war and he used exaggeration because the characters in the book where fighting over the other way the others butter their bread. And it caused war. “With the triple sling jigger i sure felt much bigger”.
In the book The Butter Battle Book, by Dr. Seuss, between two different communities of people with different beliefs lays a wall. On one side of the wall live the Yooks who eat their bread butter side up. On the other side of the wall live the Zooks who eat their bread butter side down. The book is a satire of the Cold War, which took place from 1947-1991.This book is better than other satires because it gives the reader a clear story about what the satire is really about and uses many devices to help with the satirization. Throughout the story, Dr. Seuss uses conflict, parody, and reversal to demonstrate the reality of the Cold War.
In the article, “The War on Stupid People”, Freedman depicted the emphasis the society has placed on determining or facilitating human capacity has failed the less intelligent people. Freedman detailed his argument by providing evidence on how intelligence played a huge role in employment opportunities and academic performance. Moreover, he illustrated the issue of the economically disadvantaged/less intelligent, the current approach is flawed in the favoring the intelligent. He asserted with the evolution of the view of intelligence to the point as becoming a detrimental measure for human worth. He developed his main message by first established a neutral tone by providing statistical evidence of what a significant role intelligence has played,
In the story it 's a war between the Zooks and the Yooks. The person speaking in the book is a Yook boy talking about when his grandpa took him to the wall between the two sides (Seuss pg 5). But in the story he is speaking to Audrey and also the reader. The reason for there being a war is because the Yooks eat their bread with the butter side up, in contrast the Zooks eat their bread butter side down. Also there is a lot of rhyming in the book.
