Urban legends are stories that are told like true stories when in reality they are not. These stories can be spread through verbal communication or written communication (such as email). The urban legend that will be discussed throughout this essay is called “The Candyman”; this is an interesting story to read about. The Candyman legend originated in the 1800s, there is also a movie about this legend that came out a few years after the story came to light. The next few paragraphs will be giving more information on this urban legend. The Candyman legend first originated in the 1800s, as said in the previous paragraph. Some people say that this legend is based on a true story involving a slave named Daniel Robitaille and a plantation owner’s daughter who were both in love with each other. When the plantation owner found out about their love for each other, he ran Daniel out of town and sent an angry mob for him. After the mob caught up with him, they cut off Daniel’s right hand and covered him in honey and watched bees sting him to death and while they were watching they chanted” Candyman”, thus giving him the name Candyman. Now while there are still many different versions of this legend; the themes are always the same: love, vengeance, and prejudice. Even though the story of Daniel may have been true there is no real evidence to prove that “The Candyman” will come out of the mirror and kill you if you say his name five times.
