“The man who seeks revenge digs two graves.” - Ken Kesey This quote is saying that if a person seeks revenge then they are not only hurting the person they are going after but themselves too. After all, evil never wins. We see this all the time in Disney princess movies, the “villain” goes after the protagonist but it ends up the villain dies or lives in misery the rest of his/her life. We see this in our own lives, when we try and get back at our siblings or a “friend”. This quote relates to The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. In the Most Dangerous Game it is about Rainsford, the protagonist and General Zaroff, the antagonist. Rainsford gets trapped onto an island only to find it is ruled by a “villain”, General Zaroff. Zaroff uses the island to hunt….humans. He wishes to hunt Rainsford, like a game. Three days later after Zaroff announced Rainsford had won; Rainsford felt the need to go after Zaroff. Seeking revenge. Rainsford ends up killing Zaroff, hurting (physically) Zaroff and himself. He killed someone. He has to live with this guilt for the rest of his life. The Cask of Amontillado is about Montresor and Fortunato. Montresor seeks revenge on Fortunato …show more content…
Clearly that is an overstatement. Poe uses quite a bit of imagery in this writing, for example when he says “The wine sparkled in his eyes and the bells jingled” you can see Fortunato’s eye, hear the bells, and smell the wine. Another example is when he wrote “Ha! ha! ha! --he! he! he!” Can’t you just hear that evil and hoarse laugh? Poe uses large words such as unredressed and redressed, his writing is in long sentences and very detailed. Edgar Allan Poe wants first gets us caught up in The Cask of Amontillado by saying things relating to revenge for instance, he says “I must not only punish but punish” and “At length I would be
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford comes upon an island named Ship-Trap island and he meets a man named Zaroff on it. Zaroff is a big game hunter and he says that he is bored because, it no longer challenges him. He moved to Ship-trap island to find and capture sailors and hunt them. Zaroff gives them a three hour head start then sets out to kill them. Any captives who can elude Zaroff for three days are set free.
On one hand, Rainsford is a man of decency, enthusiasm and integrity, he has strong desire to live and indomitable fighting spirit to survive. Rainsford depends on his own resources and experience won the game. On the other hand, Zaroff had many advantages over Rainsford when the game began, but he is conceited and stuck-up, this causes he lost his life in the game. Besides, Zaroff’s hunting game is unhuman and injustice, such a premise has predetermined his
“God makes some men poets. Some, he makes kings, some beggars. Me, he made a hunter.” Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game is a thrilling story that can appreciate many literary devices. The three main literary devices of this electrifying story main devices are suspense, plot, and conflict.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, the main character, Rainsford, falls off a yacht and ends up swimming to a mysterious island. On this island, he meets a man named Zaroff who kills humans as game, Rainsford has to survive on this island while Zaroff tries to hunt him down. Throughout the story the author demonstrates that things are not always what they seem on the surface. To develop this idea, the author uses irony and symbolism. In order to see this is true, one must compare the time when Rainsford first sees the Chateau and when he closely observes it, with the time when Rainsford first meets General Zaroff and after he gets to know him.
Both Rainsford and Zaroff share common passions, skills and ideology. Initially, there is admiration between both characters, but their similarities become the cause of the conflict. Rainsford murders Zaroff and has put an end to the murderous human
Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.
In "Long Way Down," author Jason Reynolds explores the devastating cycle of violence that hurts many communities. Will, the protagonist, showed us a exciting journey that highlights just how difficult it can be to break free from the vicious cycle of revenge and violence. The author shows this by telling us about how the characters were always told to get revenge, how easy it is to get pulled into the cycle, and that it makes people's vision/mind cloudy making them make bad decisions. The first quote that shows this theme is "No.3 Revenge if someone you love gets killed find the person and kill them.”
In the end, Rainsford surprises him, by hiding in the Zarroff’s bedroom and killing him. Even though they seem different, they are pretty much the same exact thing. Both trying to get killed by an evil person, and they kill the antagonist in the
Verbal irony occurs when what is said is different from what is meant. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” an example of verbal irony is the final line of the story when Montresor, the protagonist, has just killed Fortunato by walling him up in a tomb in the catacombs beneath Montresor’s palazzo. Montresor says, “In pace requiescat!” (214) which in English translates to “May he rest in peace!” This is verbal irony because, as Montresor has just murdered Fortunato, the reader can infer that Montresor does not wish Fortunato to rest in peace, though that is what he said.
If Poe’s intention are to scare the reader, then he is going to do it. As an author, he wants to use rich detail to really protrude his ideas of the story being

The author’s detailed description in the short story creates different moods in the reader like anger, satisfaction, curiosity, and victory because the chosen words connect with the audience.
II. The Ethics of the Conflict Revenge theorist Susan Jacoby writes in her book Wild Justice: The Evolution of Revenge that the history of vengeance committed in the name of God is not a function of any one religion but of the union of religious and political power; and the Christianity preached by Jesus makes abandonment of vengeance a condition of personal salvation; but the Christianity expounded by ecclesiastical authority has made vindictiveness a condition of institutional survival . Robert Langdon recounts the crimes of the Roman Catholic Church called La Purga or The Purge, where the church branded 4 Illuminati scientists with the Cross to purge their sins, and after the branding they were murdered and their bodies were dropped in
Is hatred and revenge ever justified? “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)
“That which is past is gone, and irrevocable; and wise men have enough to do with things present and to come: therefore they do but trifle with themselves, that labour in past matters.” ` This is a quote from Sir Francis Bacon’s essay, “On Revenge” explaining that men should not worry about things in the past, rather focus on the present and future. He is saying that people have too much on their plate to concern themselves with getting revenge. In the essay, it is explained that Bacon thinks that wise men should put past offenses behind them, but men who are selfish will try to get back for the things done to them. Throughout the essay he stressed that people should not seek revenge.
Though Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories like, The Cask of Amontillado, to his poems like, The Raven, Poe’s shows his writing style to use physical imagery and connotative syntax to show ,imagery in his writing.
