One debate that lays unrested in the United States and many other countries is that of whether gender inequality still exists today. Although, over the years we have most definitely advanced and improved, you cannot say that gender inequality simply does not exist anymore. It remains a major barrier to human development. (UN) But what is gender inequality exactly? Gender inequality is defined as “the disparity in status, power and prestige between people who identify as women and men.” (Ferro) Ever since the ‘decade of change’ in the 1960’s, the struggle for equity of certain races and genders has been ongoing. Even though improvements have been made throughout the years, there is evidence to prove that gender inequality does indeed still exist.

There is no doubt women have gained more independence throughout the many years of struggle but the rise to equality started during the 1960’s known as the ‘Decade of Change’. (Walsh) This fundamental time period formed the building blocks to gender equality. Various literatures addressing racial and gender inequality influenced famous feminists of the 1960s, such as Betty Friedan, and created the feminist movement in America. The victims of gender inequality can be both men and women. Think about in your own home. It’s commonly believed that women should be the ones working from home and are usually given responsibility of the children, cleaning, and cooking. The men, however, are expected to bring in the income for the family. Now days, it is somewhat odd to see a man doing all the house work instead of a women. They both work as hard as the other yet this stereotype of women and men is contributing to the idea of gender inequality on both ends.
