The Characterization of Cole Matthews
Appearance is one way that a writer shows what a character is like. It’s the features a character has that tells something about them. It’s important because a character’s appearance can give the reader clues about what they’re like. When I pictured Cole Matthews, I imagined him to be tall, have green eyes, and brunette hair that was put into a quiff. At the end of the story, I imagined Cole with shorter hair, softer facial features, and cute sweaters. Based on Cole’s appearance in part one, I could infer that he was mean and a jerk.
Action is a second way that a writer shows what a character is like. Action is the usual acts of a character. A character’s actions gives the reader a hint as to what

Speech is the words that a character says. What they say can give clues as to what they are like. As a reader, I can get a lot of information from what Cole says.
“A whale migrates but doesn’t have a home. I feel like the whales.” Cole says this on page 152 after dancing a whale dance. It shows the reader that Cole feels alone, and that no matter where he is, it doesn’t feel like a home.
“I can’t heal until I help Peter heal.” Cole says this on page 214. This tells the reader that Cole is starting to care about others and is feeling guilty about what he did to

While on the island, Cole sees the Spirit Bear, attacks it, and is mauled by the bear. After recovering for months, Cole returns to the island and Peter follows a few months later. With both boys on the island, they forgive each other and learn valuable life lessons. In a story or novel, theme is the moral lesson that the main character learns. If the story is written well, the reader can relate and understand what the lesson was. Different writers can have coinciding themes, even though their stories are completely different. There are multiple themes to Touching Spirit Bear . This novel teaches the main characters and the reader that everything runs in a circle. Once something starts, it does its purpose, die, then is recreated. Another theme in Touching Spirit Bear is that even the worst people can
Cole notices how bad his Point-of-view is with his parents and how it changes with his mom but not his dad, and how it changes on the island and with Peter. In the first place, Coles
Never judge a person by how they look, but by their personality. To begin, in the realistic fiction novel, Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, they are two friends, Max and Freak, with disabilities. Max is a very tall person who has a learning disability and Freak is not that tall and has morquio syndrome. They end up going on adventures and facing trouble. There are two themes that could be found throughout the book.
Frank Ocean once said, “When you 're happy, you enjoy the music. But when you 're sad, you understand the lyrics.” Why does one have to be sad to “understand the lyrics”? Evaluating a song and being given the ability to relate enhances one’s respect for the composer. For example, when one first listens to “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins, they probably believe the song is about love, however, once a person analyzes the lyrics the realize that the song is actually a story of a couple who are having a baby boy.
Baylee Bertetto 3rd Hour composition A theme is the moral or lesson of the story. In the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, it is obvious that the theme is greed leads to negative outcomes such as disaster, suffering, evil, catastrophe, and arrogance. I am positive that is the theme because Nag and Nagaina, who are antagonists, both have an abundance of greed. They are more greedy than a kid in a toy store that was told he or she could have whatever they wanted.
Also this personality has been enhanced whenever he was angry because he then overpowered somebody even when he was not weak, causing for him to feel stronger than usual. Cole is interesting hen when it comes to his strengths and weaknesses because he really blocks his emotions usually. From what I have read Cole is actually afraid of being alone because he doesn’t like not having anybody to be with. Cole’s strengths include his actual physical strength, his endurance to pain and his ability to make people believe him. Yet what cole has not noticed is that he has hidden his tears behind a curtain of false belief.
The novel Double Exposure written by Brian Caswell revolves around the lives of twins who have an abusive father; the older brother Chris being artistic and a genius whereas the younger brother Cain just being the average guy. It also focuses on their love interests; Abby and TJ, both who are dealing with their own traumatic pasts. Caswell uses various techniques like dreams, flashbacks and characterization in order to convey the theme of trauma and the effects the past has on the lives of the characters, hence inspire the audience through it. Caswell use of dreams highlights a deeper meaning of life since it implies that dreams will keep haunting an individual until they have the power to overcome their past.
The novel has two themes displayed through the novel. One theme is to never give up. Another theme is when an individual is scared to do something they can overcome
To me the best theme in the story is friendship. I believe that every person needs to show friendship to
Cole has changed how he feels about nature from the beginning of the book, exactly like how the first and final haikus differ from each other. The following statement shows how he has changed and realized he is a small part of a big circle, and is what inspired the “realizing life’s a circle” part of the haiku: “Standing beside the totems, explained to Peter that being invisible was being a part of life’s circle and accepting it. ‘This morning, when we forgave each other, we also forgave ourselves,’ he said. ‘We allowed ourselves to become a part of the big circle. . . .’” (Mikaelsen 239), whereas in the beginning Cole hated the idea of the circle and only thought of
“More weight,” stated by Giles Corey from, “The Crucible,” before he was pressed to death for witchcraft. Giles Corey was one of the oldest people to be killed during the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials was a series of events that took place in 1692, where innocent people were hung for apparently being witches. The people in the trials were tried in court and the girls who accused them would act like the person or people were sending spirits towards them to make the judges believe them. Giles Corey reminds me of myself by his sarcasm during conversations, always acting ornery, and the comical remarks he makes.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
There are several themes in the book, each one has a significant meaning to the storyline. The first symbol that describes the theme of abuse of power is government control. The reason that they hold the Hunger Games is because it is a dystopian society and most of the districts are poor and the capitol likes it because it keeps them entertained just because they believe that they are superior to everyone else who lives outside the capitol. To explain this more into detail, the government controls all the districts and all the districts have to follow the rules or else there is a serious punishment.
The relationships in Cole’s life all had a different impact on him but specifically his relationship with Peter affected him a lot. Especially the part of the book when Cole found out that Peter told on him. “‘You’re a dead man,’ he warned... He laughed when he saw fear in Peter’s eyes”(7-8). This shows the relationship at the beginning of the book and clearly it wasn’t good.
Theme Symbolism for Elephants Usually in a novel, a theme is something that helps the reader infer what the main ideas are by finding common threads throughout the story. In the novel, Water for Elephants, the theme of love is hard to miss, despite all the circus cruelties and tragedies. Young Jacob falls instantly in love with Marlena, the trick horse rider. Later Marlena works with Rosie, the elephant, with whom both Jacob and Marlena fall in love. It is their love of animals that pulls the two love-birds together.
For example, when Cole purposy bothered the Spirt Bear and later on ended up getting mauld by the animal. It is obvious that Cole’s decisions and actions against banishment lead him to fail the act. Cole’s consistent negative attitude made him dislike the idea of meaning humane. Since the beginning of the book, Cole has satisfied himself with anger. Cole believes that he can concor anything with his anger.
