Unlike the New York organized crime scene which consists of the Five Families, the Chicago mob consists of only one family known as the Outfit. The outfit dates to the times of Al Capone and has traditionally stayed away from drug trafficking crimes and focused on loan-sharking and online gambling (The Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2011).
The Chicago La Costa Notra: History The Outfit can be traced to the early 1900’s with an increase of Italian immigrants in Chicago. Prior to prohibition multiple street gangs were involved in criminal activity throughout the city. Additionally, a scheme was brought to Chicago from Italy known as the “Black Hand”. It involved threatening residents with violence unless money was paid; the extortion letters were stamped with a hand in ink. Some black hands joined forces and created organized criminals (American Mafia History, ND).
The Outfit obtained power and control in the 1920’s. Giacomo “Big Jim” Colosimo obtained solid control over portions of the criminal world and ran hundreds of brothels. Giovanni “Papa Johnny” Torrio wanted The Outfit to explore the business of underground liquor operations upon the implementation of prohibition; when Colosimo refused,

During this time, Al Capone gained more power and provided beer and liquor to the public of Chicago. He also began to utilize political influence and had a puppet candidate elected as the mayor of Cicero. Dion O’Banion and his Irish-American gang ruled the north and The Outfit ruled the south. O’Banion had been hijacking Torrio’s and Capone’s liquor and in 1924 the tension erupted following a bust of a brewery owed by the three. The incident led to O’Banion being shot in his flower shop. The violence between the North Side gang and The Outfit led to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The massacre was ordered by Capone and carried out by two hitmen and left seven dead (Lyman & Potter,
In the 1920’s, prohibition in the United States gave a massive boost to crime throughout the nation. Imagine leaving school and entering a world made up of dark and grim despair, with every corner one turns not knowing what’s around it. Piles of money were being given to gangs as profit piling in from illegal liquor sales and associated protection. Alliances among the common people, leaders, and friends were constantly shifting upon their views of the rising levels of crime in America. In 1924, a battle between the Italian-Sicilian mob led by Al Capone, and the Irish-Jewish mob obtaining support from Dion O’Banion took place; declaring this as a battle that shook the city.
Using territories to their advantage was not all that bootleggers did. They also developed sophisticated plans and made connections and used them to their advantage. They created networks throughout the cities, with citizens, law enforcement, and government officials alike. They did all they could to protect themselves and their business, History.com writes “Italian-American gangs (along with other ethnic gangs) entered the booming bootleg liquor business and transformed themselves into sophisticated criminal enterprises, skilled at smuggling, money laundering and bribing police and other public officials". They did all they could to ensure their business' success.
Valentine’s Day massacre Capone fled the city in fear of Moran trying to get revenge for the murder of his men. When Moran was questioned about the killing he answered, “Only Capone can kill like that!” But somehow Capone still got away with no charges and no jail time. The massacre astounded everyone and made them realize how brutal gang warfare really is. When people heard about this killing they all wanted Capone in jail even President Hoover wanted him there
Police are doubling their efforts in order to put an end to organised crime, and the underground empire these mobsters have created. Al Capone's bootlegging, and other criminal activities are estimated to make him over 100 million dollars a year,“His underground empire has its tentacles in almost every illegal activity possible” said one officer we interviewed. “Al Capone is by far the most powerful man in chicago” says one citizen we interviewed another said “if Al wants you to disappear your gonna disappear”. With the prohibition act of 1919 mobsters have making
Gangs began fighting for their territories which led to destruction and death. Violent crime became prominent in the era of prohibition. Capone was one of the major leaders in the violent crime. He organized one of the worst murders during this era, the St. Valentine 's Day Massacre. The St. Valentine Day Massacre is just one example of the numerous murders committed in the mobsters search for territory.
During the 1920’s crime was at an all time high in Chicago due to prohibition and turf wars between rival gangs. One of the most famous gangsters during this time period was Alphonse “Al” Capone. Born in Brooklyn, New York to two poor immigrant parents on January 17, 1899 he grew up being active in two different kid gangs, the Brooklyn Rippers and the Forty Thieves Juniors. When he got older he started working at different jobs in a candy store, a cutter in a book bindery and a pin boy in a bowling alley.(Chicagohs) When he was a teenager he was recruited by a famous gangster named Johnny Torrio.
Capone moved to Chicago to avoid a murder investigation in New York and there he joined Torrio’s gang. Once Capone was boss, he had only one enemy, the North Side Gang, who tried to kill him in 1926. Therefore, Capone retaliated in 1929 with the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Seven members of
Torrio took Capone under his wing, with Capone looking to Torrio as his mentor. Gang warfare ruled the streets of Chicago during the late 1920’s. Two of they key players involved in this warfare were Al “Scarface” Capone and George “Bugs” Moran. As the infamous Al Capone took the reigns of chief crime lord from his boss Johnny Torrio in 1925, he sought to seek out and eliminate his rivals in the illegal
Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. He was born to Italian immigrants, Gabriel and Teresa Capone, who had just immigrated from Naples, Italy, 3 months before Alphonse was born. Alphonse also had 8 other siblings: Frank, Ralph, James, Matthew, Umberto, Mafalda, and Ermina. Al Capone started school and was very intelligent for his age. However, as time passed, he began to fall behind other students.
Valentine’s Day Massacre, Capone already had 100 dead men on his hands, and gave Chicago a very bad name on organized crime. The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was where Capone had men shoot down 4 of Moran’s men in a small building. It became known as rattled Mafia bosses. (True Crime Mafia 72) While this was happening, Capone was in Florida on vacation.
Capone kept bootlegging and making money. Everything was going good and Capone had everything under control besides the few gangs that kept on trying to take his turf. So eventually Capone got tired of it and ordered them to get executed. Thus leading to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.
During the 1920’s gang related crime was a serious issue. The leader of all this violence and corruption was a man named Al “Scarface” Capone (“Al Capone”). This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor. He was not convicted for any of his crimes, even the St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929, until he was imprisoned for tax evasion (Horan).

“During the 1920s Prohibition era, when the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution banned the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcoholic beverages, Italian-American gangs (along with other ethnic gangs) entered the booming bootleg liquor business” (Infamous). Speakeasies were a product of the Prohibition Act. Which allowed for the criminals known as mobsters to create profit through illegal liquor sales through, bootlegging, the illegal production of alcohol, and rum-running. Rum-running being the smuggling of rum from foreign places into the
They lined up seven victims in front of a wall and gunned them down. Capone was arrested many times after this incident. In 1931 he was sentenced to eleven years in prison for tax evasion. He had a hard time in prison.
