The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham, published in 1955, is a science fiction dystopian novel that focuses on a small community suffering the effects of a nuclear holocaust. The society of Waknuk has survived a nuclear war, but radiation has contaminated the living things outside the small community. The inhabitants of Waknuk are religious and stern and regard the disaster as the wrath of God, immediately eliminating any deviational person, plant or animal. Joseph Strorm is the main character, David's father as well as a preacher and magistrate in Waknuk. Due to Joseph’s extreme religious beliefs he is tremendously cold-hearted towards his family and unrealistically strict when it comes to dealing with any deviations. He is also excessively devoted, …show more content…
Joseph is a magistrate in Waknuk and has been preaching since he was 16 years old, that alone shows how prideful and devoted he is to his town and to God. One of the first instances where his devotedness can be noticed is when he found out the Daker family housed a tailless cat. He discovered the cat had been a result of a deviation, and he wanted the cat to be deemed as an Offence and be dealt with accordingly. Joseph demanded for the inspector to make a warrant for the cats destruction, and after the inspector did so, Joseph “personally attended the demise of the Daker’s cat.” (37). Joseph later found out that the cat had in fact lost its tail some how during its life, rather than it being the result of a deviation, but yet did not resign from his magistrate position although he should have. This shows how prideful Joseph is of his role in Waknuk as well as how devoted and determined he is to making sure there are no mutants whatshover. Another instance of Joseph’s devotedness was after his newborn baby, Petra, was born. In Waknuk, families do not recognize or pay any attention to their newborn until it receives a normalcy certificate from the inspector. Joseph’s wife gave birth to a baby, and had two babies who did not receive a normalcy certificate prior to this one. This caused quite a bit of tension in the household because Joseph, along with everyone else, knew his wife would be thrown away like garbage if this child was Blasphemous. Rather than Joseph spending time with his wife who had just given birth or visiting his baby for the first time, his first thought was to order the inspector. Joseph is so overly devoted and determined to be right in the eyes of God, that he would ignore his newborn baby and wife until they were deemed normal. “There was plenty of silent speculation whether my father would, as the law allowed, send my mother

Joe Pitt is a Mormon lawyer and a closeted homosexual who is presented as a naïve believer in the ideology of the Right. Likewise, he is an ardent believer in the American Justice system and its set of laws which you must not violate, or else, you will pay. At one point, Roy tells him: “Transgress a little, Joseph. . . There are so many laws; find one to break” (Kushner 2011: 116). When he is offered a job in the Justice Department in Washington, DC, he proclaims to his wife Harper:
Character Paragraph – The Chrysalids In John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids, the main character David Storm is not the same as the people that live with him. He is a kind, trustworthy, and a boy of dreams, who sees the world in a different perspective than everyone else. In the beginning of the book, David talks about dreaming about “a city”, which he considers strange “because [the dream] began before [he] even knew what a city was.”
Fallen Angels Global Issue Essay In the book, Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Meyers, Richard Perry joins the United States army during the Vietnam war. Perry makes it to Vietnam and meets many new people with whom he grows closer and closer with every day. Perry sees lots of death throughout his time in the war and it gives the reader a good perspective of how gruesome and traumatic serving in a war can be and how seeing that much death and violence can affect a soldier. Perry watches as some of the people he served alongside die right in front of him and this scares him as he continues to think that he could be next.
He was separated from his people for 40 years Just as Moses’ was, we as Blacks in America been separated by auction blocks to court room stock! Joseph was separated from his people because of jealousy self interest! Today our people are so self interest driven until selling- out is our cultural norm. Joseph did not lower his divine standards just because of his conditions, injustice, didn’t turn him into a dope user, nor a thief. Self pity was not a friend of Joseph.
Secondly, Joesph Strom also tells off his sister-in-law for giving birth to a blasphemy for the 3rd time: “I don’t understand how you dared to come here, to a God-fearing house, with such a suggestion”. Worse still, you do not show an atom of shame or remorse” (Ch7
His role in the book is Waknuk town magistrate and he is a very strong religious leader. His job is searching for deviations in any crops, plants, animals, and humans. Joseph is very successful in changing Waknuk society but that changes when he realizes some people are deviations on the inside. Joseph is a very strong because he cares more about having a pure town than about his own family. This is shown when David says, “ I could have managed it all right by myself if I’d had another hand.”
Bobcats, being wild animals, bring forth a sense of strength and agility, both of which Joe lacked in life. By bestowing these qualities onto Joe through the form of a bobcat, Hurston is displaying that death itself will not prevent one from attempting to achieve equality. Joe now shares the same qualities as Spunk, allowing him to be seen as equal to the man who treated him so poorly in life. Also, similar to how Spunk is described as “skeered of nothin’” (949), the bobcat also displays clear bravery, “[standing] right still an’ [looking Spunk] in the eye, an’ howling right at him” (953). Again, Joe has taken on the qualities
James I of England was the first king in the stuart family. If we read those two quotes, we will see that neither of them tells good about James I of England. If we think about this king and the fact that he will rule england we would be thinking england won't have a king and time. If James I is wearing an armor under his clothes, then he he must be scared, not only from being shot. So i think he won't be able to rule england properly, and the english people won't like him, and it might be another roller coaster, england will have a bad time with his rule.
Not only does Joe show the cruelty through the stories of brutal and inhumane treatment of people in the past but he also shows the cruelty in his own treatment after he breaks through the silent barrier of communication. Joe has just broken the barrier with his tapping of morse code, the nurse and the individual who knows morse code understand what he is trying to do. The unknown individual and Joe have a very simple conversation which ends with the crushing of all Joe’s hopes for a real life, “What you ask is against regulations who are you” (page 235). Joe at this point has given
Joe goes as far as to ordering her what to wear when he says,” Her hair was NOT going to show in the store. It didn’t seem sensible at all. That was because Joe never told Janie how jealous he was”(55).Joe is concerned about other men admiring his wife because he is afraid that Janie will no longer listen to him, and then leave him. It is very important to Joe that he possesses complete ownership and dominance over Janie, so when Janie resists, Joe becomes worried. When Joe couldn’t find the order for the pig’s feet, he says, ”You ain’t put it where Ah told yuh tuh.
This novel is considered an allegory of the Holocaust. There is a similar chain of events leading to disarray when one race thinks it is superior to another. It teaches the danger of discrimination and superiority which results in eradication

“It’s the usual story, the usual stories. God to Adam, God to Noah. Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth [...]. Give me children, or else I die. Am I in God’s stead, who bath withheld from the fruit of the womb?
Jacob favored Joseph over his brothers and that caused Joseph’s brother’s to be jealous. This jealousy caused his brother’s to hate Joseph and to plan against him. At one point, Jacob sent Joseph out to go check on his brothers. They saw him coming though and started to plan against
