The Civil Rights Activist: Diane Nash

“It’s better to look ahead and prepare, than to look back and regret.” This is a quote said by Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Jackie Joyner-Kersee is a retired track star, considered to be the greatest female athlete of the 20th century. She is the Greatest African American because of her extreme accomplishments and her determination to succeed and help others. Jackie is a living example that proves that you can become successful through any tough situation.

Any individual can be a hero if he/she is willing to make sacrifices and act selfless to help others. A hero is brave, determined, and confident. Their actions influence people around them to adopt these noble qualities The acts that Rosa Parks has done demonstrates the many traits of a true hero.

Dorothy height was born in Richmond Virginia on March 24, 1912. Height was a civil rights activist along with a women’s right activist. Over the span of her career height received more than 50 awards from varies local, state, and national organizations. Some her major awards that she received were; Presidential Citizens Medal in 1989, Spingarn Medal in 1993, Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, Jefferson Awards for Public Service in 2001, Heinz Awards in 2001, and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. While height was fighting for social reforms for both genders she was mainly focused on reforms for African American women. She advocated for things like freedom of choice for women and for better living along with working conditions for women and men. The life and accomplishments of height and how she fought for the escape from racial and sexual discrimination, and is not mentioned in history classes today, shows how inherently harder it is for women to fight for justice during the civil rights movement.

Rosa Parks faced a lot of hard challenges in the time of 1931. She was a great reenactor and leader. She made a huge impact on human race. She wasn’t like all people now days. Rosa was once the girl who had to walk to school, while other white kids rode a bus to school. Rosa was getting sick and tired of the way people were treating her and her kind, so she made a movement that affected everyone. There was a group of them that were done with getting mistreated, and the practiced what would happen o the bus, work, and practically everywhere else. This amazing group was called the NAACP. NAACP means National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This was a group that proved that actions speak louder than words, and they weren’t just rich, billionaires, they were ordinary people getting mistreated, and finally getting fed up with other people 's behaviors.

With all of the craziness going on in our world today whether it be politically (the ever unraveling Trump saga), socially (raging race or gender problems) or economically (money circulation to everyone or lack thereof), it would be quite easy for someone with a dream to feel discouraged, especially if they were on the “opposed” side of any of the above mentioned issues. But after reading about Jane Addams and W.E.B. Dubois, they prove that as long as you are consistent, passionate and conscientious you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to, regardless of your gender, color or political/economic stature.

In history there are a lot of great leaders who stood up for what they believed in and never gave up, such as the books A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls LaNier and Little Rock Girl by Shelley Tougas. In the book there are young leaders who never gave up and had a great impact on young people. 14 year old Carlotta, was in the group with 8 other young teenagers who only wanted to make it to class. Just making it through the door of Central High was a huge relief. In 1957, during the integration in Little Rock Central High school, the media illuminated certain events but showed an inaccurate or incomplete picture of other events.

Jesse Owens was a dreamer who faced all obstacles and challenges in order to turn his dreams into realities. Du Bois quoted, “The worker must work for the glory of his handiwork.” These are two quotes from two great leaders of the African American community in the late 19th and 20th Century. Although they were great leaders, they both had their own outlook on strategies regarding social and economic progress in the African American community. Regardless of their differences and outcome of their strategy, both remarkable leaders had one common goal, to end racism in America and build up the black community.

Born on October 6, 1917, the youngest of twenty children, daughter of two sharecroppers and the wife of Perry Hamer. A woman by the name of Fannie Lou Hamer was one of the history's wells- known, well-respected activist and philanthropist. March 3, 1977, was the day that the great Mrs. Hamer passed away due to cancer. She had been in and out of the hospital for a great part of her life, but this did not stop her from devoting her life to change. A close friend and colleague Andrew Young, a United States delegate to the United Nations, held Mrs. Hamer's funeral. He gave an 18-minute-long eulogy to 400 close family and friends and then spoke in respects to her at another memorial service where 2,000

Robert Parris Moses and Diane Nash are two among the many vital but not well known heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. Moses unceasingly fought for the voting rights of African Americans and because of Nash’s never ending effort, both, the Freedom Rides and desegregation of lunch counters were made possible. Both, Moses and Nash, had different ways to approach what they were trying to do in the Civil Rights Movement. Moses stayed in the background of the whole voter registration project while Nash was on the frontline of trying to desegregate the lunch counters by participating in the sit-ins and protests. Although they had different approaches, they were both equally successful.
