Poverty poses a challenge for all countries around the globe and with the rapid development of societies, different definitions of poverty has evolved. Eliminating poverty has to be seen as a long-term goal and not something which can be easily achieved. In this essay, poverty is discussed as relative poverty, which is a standard that is defined in terms of the society in which an individual lives and which therefore differs between countries and over time. Some methods to eliminate poverty include creating more jobs, gender equality as well as a good education for all.

Being literate in today’s world is not enough, basic education must encompass computer skills, soft skills such as communication and teamwork and technical skills. With these skill sets, when the children grow up, they’ll be able to find jobs more easily - be it a desk job or a service job, and prevent them from entering relative poverty. Evidence from the EFA Global Monitoring Report shows that for every US$1 spent on education, between US$10 and US$15 would be generated in economic growth. If all students in low income countries left school with basic reading skills, we could eradicate 12% of world poverty. As such, it is an essential investment. Skills are the key way in which education reduces poverty. Education makes it more likely for men and women not just to be employed, but to hold jobs that are more secure and provide good working conditions and decent pay. In so doing, education can not only help lift households out of poverty, but also guard against them falling – or falling back – into poverty. Therefore, education can also help to eliminate poverty.

In conclusion, the key to eliminating poverty lies in the government’s hands and with their policies, poverty can slowly but surely be eliminated. With a larger and equal workforce with skilled workers, the country will benefit economically and see fewer of its population living in poverty. It is important to note that eradicating the world – much less a country out of poverty is a challenge and only with time can the results of various policies be seen.
