As the famous author Coretta Scott King once said, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” What she means by this, is that through the contributions and support of the community, people can come together and truly form a connection. Likewise, in the book Seedfolks, Paul Fleischman, a diverse group in Cleveland, Ohio, is brought together through the aid of each other. The group on Gibb Street is transformed into a community because of Leona’s ambition towards clearing the lot, the collaboration of Curtis and Royce, and the celebration of the harvest festival. To begin, Leona’s contribution to the group’s transformation into a community is through her ambition towards clearing the lot. As Leona believes that people will not be motivated to garden until the litter is removed, she is determined to clean up the lot. Leona announces, "The garbage was piled as high as your waist... But I knew precious few would join until that mess was hauled far away." (25-26). It was Leona’s contribution which then led people to begin gardening. Leona adamantly protests to get the trash removed, her actions driving many new people into the garden. Leona shows that dedication to the community contributes to a stronger …show more content…
Curtis notices that Royce is in a time of need, with a rising sense of empathy, he chooses to help Royce out. Curtis explains his actions, “I’m the one who found him…I bought him breakfast and we made us a deal,” (57). Curtis sees Royce struggling and helps him. In a community it’s vital to recognize others’s suffering, and help others when they need it. Curtis shows that communities are formed when people lend a helping hand without being asked. Curtis’s assistance towards Royce is critical to the making of this community, because it shows how a community can be a support system when facing
Later on, it follows Leona, a woman with a passion to clean out the vacant lot. The book tells you about other neighbors that also help the garden. From Kim to Florence, they all did something to help the garden. Community is the main theme in Seedfolks. For example, in Amir, Amir meets a woman that had criticized him in his shop because she claimed that he gave her the wrong amount of change and got really angry.
After I listened to Majora Carter 's passionate speech, I learn that we must work together as a community to improve the quality of our surrounding environment. Poor neighborhood often located near industrial factories or sewage system which correlated to the high percentages of obesity and asthma in these ares. According to Majora Carter, poor people not only poor but also unhealthy. Coming from a minority low-income family, Carter knows how it feel to live in polluted areas and she was brave enough to stand up and ask her community to help her make a different. After vacant lands in Bronx areas turned into parks and walk-able neighborhoods, people stopped alliterate, crime rate dropped because the streets were alive with people.
Within the community, they find strength, shaping their identities,
At one time in life you have witnessed the horror of someone littering. If not, then I am sure that you have littered yourself. During this essay a man describes his experience of cleaning up the streets of Miami and ridding them of some litterbugs. In this essay, “A Couple of Really Neat Guys,” Dave Barry uses hyperbole and clever wordplay to reveal the universal truth about littering. To reveal the rudeness of littering, Barry uses hyperbole to get his point across.
After seeing problems like this occur in his city Ron Finley was motivated by his fear of seeing people starving, to start growing a garden infront of his house. Ron finley doing this allows there to be change in his community.
She was involved with her children and the community doing deeds such as baby sitting for neighbors and PTA activities. She noticed that an elderly neighbor had failing health every winter due to her living conditions. Her house was “so dilapidated that it couldn’t retain heat” (Loeb, 2010). As a caring neighbor, Virginia went to the city to find assistance for the neighbor.
The importance of community to resisting oppression: being woven into a network of passionate and dedicated friends and activists helped Stevenson stand up to the injustices he faced, not to mention that community has helped Stevenson effectively stand up to injustice on behalf of
Community ensures one has a secure space to share struggles; without it, feelings build up until they overflow. Likewise, an absence of community is also seen in “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury. Leonard Mead, a man who enjoyed taking walks, was arrested for his presence outside. Everyone else in the town was too focused on their screens to recognize the outside world. Leonard Mead went on many walks but, “In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not once in all” (Bradbury
Whether you have an author in your head trying to kill you, a terminal illness, or any obstacle that life throws your way, without support from a community these difficulties can be impossible to overcome. Even if Harold wasn’t in this life or death scenario, this community he was able to build makes him happy, gives him something to live for. He needed these people to survive, but did he need the
“There’s lots of traditional thinking buried deep within each story and the longer you spend thinking about it the more you learn about yourself, your people and the Indian way” (Wagamese, 1994, p.145). Reuniting with his family, discovering his heritage, connecting with community members, and learning the traditional teachings and practices have greatly impacted his sense of self, identity, and values toward community. It was foundational to his self-discovery and community connection that he had several people like his sister who were willing to share the family history and their ties to the community. To understand the nature, processes and experience of sense of community at any one time for a particular community it is necessary to have some appreciation of the community’s history (Pretty, 2006). Working closely with Keeper and reconciling the negative feelings his mother had toward losing him has likely helped solidify an aspect of community wherein members matter to one another and that their needs will be met by staying
With the connection, these two women have developed they create a sense of family to raise their children. Along with the developing friendship, Taylor helps Lou Ann with the struggle of her husband leaving “When something was bugging Angel, he’d never of stayed up half the night with me talking and eating everything that wasn’t nailed down” (120). This is one realization that communities are a necessity to support others through
The vivid description of scraping shoes and kicking mud illustrates their unwavering resolve. The presence of newcomers adds to the imagery, reinforcing the power of community to foster connection and solidarity. This imagery supports the idea that when communities unite, individuals gain the strength to confront and overpower oppressive forces. Grant asks Jefferson if there is anything else he wants to say to his godmother before he leaves the prison. Grant sees Jefferson look up to him.
we can build a community here” (Butler 319). The speech shows that Lauren has come a long way from scaring her best friend Joanne into thinking that the world was going to end. Out of struggle comes strength, and the community of Acorn is a beacon of hope despite the trials and
Society is fooled into believing in the applied connection among people. Benedict Anderson’s idea of imagined communities emphasizes that, “… the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (5). Members of neighborhoods, cities, states, or countries feel a sense of unity with other members for living in the same place or maybe having the same basic values, but true unity comes from understanding the similarities among each other, considering the impact a person can have on another, and caring about lives. Recognizing the importance of lives being socially intertwined is necessary to sustain a considerate society.
A community, a complex term that often times elicits various feelings and definitions, generally implies that there are relationships between a group of people that share some common goals, values, the same geographical location, or, perhaps a way of life that reinforces one another. In a community, members choose to associate with, or connect to each other. However, it is only when we take a step back from the activities in our life’s, do we recognize reality and witness the social interactions that occur around us every day. The overarching purpose of this assignment was to go out into the community on two separate occasions to observe the social interactions- paying close attention to evidence of social networks, excluded or exclusive communities,
